HEALTHY LIVING

Life expectancy is increasing

and people want to look youthfuland be active for longer

But some external factors can be damaging to our health … and we can’t always control them.

Like pollution of water and air, smoke,…

Around 90 %* of European Union citizens are exposed to damaging air pollutants from industry, vehicles … at levels which may be harmful to their health

Example:

Leading dermatologists and photobiologists warn that daily exposure to ultraviolet rays means the skin can age twice as quickly as skin that is protected*

*University College Hospital, Besancon, in France, Dailymail, September 2010

There are concerns about the fact that exposure to free radicals

increases oxidative stress

We can help our body to be ready to eliminate

these substances

But there are things we can do

How?

Our body needs fruit and vegetables

THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY NUTRITIONAL BASIS

A report requested by the World Health Organisation (WHO) links adequate intake of fruits and vegetables to health*.

It’s just so inconvenient when you have to take 5 pieces of fruits with you to work, every single day…

WHO recommends we consume 400 grams of fruits or vegetables per day. This equals 4 to 5 pieces fruits or vegetables per day.

vs REALITYTHEORY

So it all starts with a balanced diet:

A healthy diet helps ensure that all nutrient recommendations are met

A healthy diet consists of a good balance between macronutrients and micronutrients

Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids

and water

Vitamins and minerals

Why are micronutrients so important?

Vitamins such as vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B12 and vitamin C contribute to normal energy- yielding metabolism

Minerals like zinc, magnesium, manganese and calcium contribute to the maintenance of normal bones

As one element of a healthy nutritional basis, the WHO recommendation is to consume 4 to 5 pieces fruits or vegetables per day – or 400 grams of fruits or vegetables, every day.

However, about half of the people of 7

European member states has a mean

daily intake of less than 275 grams.*

Poor Food ChoicesEating on the run, eating mainly junk food

Reasons?

Food Storage and Preparation MethodsSome cooking methods cause vitamin loss

Intensive Farming Practices can lower nutritional value

Bioavailability of Nutrients

Some human body conditions can inhibit absorption of some nutrients

Changing Nutritional Requirements due to stress, fatigue, pregnancy …

Lifestyle Factors can have an effect on your body nutritional needs

SUPPORT YOUR BODYImmune System - Skin - Oxidative Stress

We will be focusing on 3 main areas:

• Our immune system• Our skin• Preventing oxidative stress

Our immune system

… is our defence mechanism against foreign invaders, parasites, bacteria, …

… is a complex network of cells, tissue and organs

… if disorders in our immune system occur, this could lead to for example inflammatory problems

Our skin … is an essential organ - for all living beings.

Without skin, life would be impossible

Our largest organ, counting for 7% of our total body weight, the skin forms the main separation between our body’s internal environment and its surroundings.

As such, it will react to problems with both internal (disorders with our immune system) and external causes (reaction to allergens in the environment).

• This layer of our skin consists of a veritable “cushion of fat”.

• It offers both mechanical and chemical protection.

HYPODERMIS

Situated underneath the epidermis, our dermis contains fibroblasts, responsible for the formation of fibres:

• Collagen fibres - our connective tissue fibres, which support our skin’s firmness & elasticity

• Elastic fibres - a network that runs between our collagen fibres, which promote skin elasticity.

DERMIS

How does it occur?

Oxidative Stress

In our body, we can find free radicals.

They occur as part of chemical processes like breathing and can also be generated when we are exposed to cigarette smoke, polluted air …

Free radicals can become harmful to our body’s normal functioning: As a reaction to their unstable situation, free radicals can take an electron from another molecule, thus generating another unstable molecule, that in turn can no longer perform its normal function.

This chain reaction is also known as oxidative stress - oxidation of healthy tissue, DNA - and is linked

to health concerns such as skin damage.

Step 1 Step 2

Free radical unstable missing an electron

Electron taken from functional molecule

Functional molecule can no longer perform

its function

But luckily, there are those substances called antioxidants, which our body can use to neutralise harmful free radicals.

They terminate the chain reaction by neutralising free radicals

Free radical stabilised by electron donated by the

antioxidant

Antioxidant protects functional molecule by giving up one of its own electrons

Functional molecule can continue to perform its

function

Antioxidants protect the functions of molecules

By sustaining a healthy balance of free radicals and antioxidants, you can help your

body to avoid the impact of oxidative stress.

We can increase our levels of antioxidants by adapting our food consumption towards substances that are rich in antioxidants.

JVi ®...

A Vibrant Colour

The bright colour found in many fruits and vegetables is an expression of the presence of interesting vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.

Did you know? Carotenoids, like Lycopene and β-Carotene, are a family of more than 600 pigments responsible for the bright colours of many a nutrient.

β-Carotene, and other carotenoids, are vitamin A precursors. Your body can receive vitamin A directlym or via conversion to vitamin A via the precursors.

JVi® gets its bright colour mainly from the carrots and tomatoes it contains: Carrots get their orange colour from β-Carotene, while tomatoes are red thanks to Lycopene.

Why Olive Oil?

Is there a reason why we included olive oil in this tasty beverage? Yes! Olive oil helps to increase the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, present in JVi®.

Did you know? Oil is lighter than water, so it will rise to the surface. This is why you may see oily particles floating on the surface of your JVi.

This is easily solved: Just shake well before use to have a perfect blend!

Wolfberry
