IntroductionTonsils are the two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of yourthroat. Inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils is called tonsillitis. Theinflammation usually extends to the adenoid and the lingual tonsils;therefore, the term pharyngitis may also be used.

Tonsillitis is usually most often occurs in children but this condition rarelyoccurs in children younger than 2 years. Bacterial tonsillitis, which causedby Streptococcus species is typically occurs in children aged between 5 to 15years old, meanwhile viral tonsillitis is more common in younger children.

Tonsillitis itself is not contagious, but the viruses and bacteria that cause itare contagious. Prevention by frequent hand washing is the mostrecommended suggestion.

Patients who have acute tonsillitis present signs and symptoms such asfever, sore throat, foul breath, dysphagia (difficulty of swallowing),odynophagia (painful swallowing) and will have tender cervical lymph nodes.Emergency care is recommended to patients who have trouble breathing, start drooling and have lots of trouble

Treatment for TonsillitisA mild case of tonsillitis, especially viral tonsillitis does notnecessarily require treatments. Treatments are usually for moresevere cases of tonsillitis which may include administration ofantibiotics or tonsillectomy procedure.

Tonsillitis due to bacterial infection will be prescribed withantibiotics and patients are usually advised to complete the fullcourse of antibiotics. Analgesics medicines to relieve the sorethroat can also help while the throat is healing.

Meanwhile, tonsillectomy is a surgery procedure which willremove the tonsils. Tonsillectomies today are only recommendedfor patients who experience recurrent or chronic tonsillitis.Tonsillectomy is also recommended to treat tonsillitis thatdoesn’t respond to other treatment, or tonsillitis that causescomplications.
