HEIDEVELD
Homes bring hopeEARL HAUPT
@EarlHaupt
The day finally arrived on Tuesday lastweek for 30 beneficiaries of the Heidev-eld housing project to have the keys to
their new homes officially handed to them. For Louis Solomons (63), it has brought an
end to a 38-year wait to have a place to callhis own, after living nomadically betweenBishop Lavis, Delft, Mitchell’s Plain andWesbank.“This is a huge relief and pleasure to be
able to hold my own house’s key in my pos-session. I never thought that this would be-
come a realisation. I thought that Imayhavepassed on by the time I would have gottena house – 38 years of waiting.”Solomons was the first to have his key
handed to him by Patricia de Lille, mayorfor the City of Cape Town. She said that the R105m project to build
738 houses, which started in 2009, should becompleted by the end of June next year.“Residents from often overcrowded condi-
tions in Heideveld, Vanguard Estate, Wel-come Estate, Bonteheuwel and Gugulethuare going to come together and have a placeto call home here between today and June2017 when the project is complete.
“Wewill alsobe ensuring that, in the spiritof inclusivity, 37 of thehouseswill be allocat-ed to beneficiaries with special needs likethe physically disabled,” she said.De Lille addressed approximately 100 peo-
ple at the Cathkin Community centre beforegoing out to the site, in Reserve Peak Road,to hand over the keys to their respectiveowners.“This project will come to be known as a
milestone in our quest to build an inclusivecity. Each one of the beneficiaries presenthere today also has their own story of bothhardship and perseverance,” she said.Faieek and Patricia Fenton (54) are excit-
ed at the prospect of finally having a homein which they and their three children andtwo grandchildren can live together in.“I have been waiting for this house since
1981,” said Patricia.“I have been living with my mother-in-
law, with my own mother, then back to themother-in-law and back tomymother again. Now, after 36 years, I have my own house,so I don’t have to worry anymore. It is excit-ing.”De Lille urged the new homeowners to be
vigilant andnot allow social ills to infect andpermeate the new neighbourhood.V Continued on page 2

“Don’t just walk by when you see some-one uses this opportunity to start a she-been.Don’t turn theotherwaywhenyousee that what was meant to be a familyhome becomes a tik house. Do not letnegative elements and criminals takethis fresh start from you,” she stated.Mugidein Barnes, the HeideveldNeighbourhood Watch representativeon the community policing forum, saysthey are overseeing the formation of anew unit to help keep the area safe. Bar-nes says there was a relatively goodturnout at one of the meetings in whichtheymanaged to sign up almost 50mem-bers to the new formation.“Goudiniand Groenberg roads areforming a neighbourhood watch. Theystarted officially patrolling as of Mon-day 18 April. We wanted to establish agroup there because of the new housingproject, so that when people move inthey will see that there is a structure inplace. We are also going to mobilisethem to join that structure, because peo-ple need to take responsibility of the ar-ea and that is why we are mobilising allstreets in Heideveld,” he says.

Fabio O’Ryan-Paulo may only be in Grade8 at Claremont High but he’s already a
winner – and in the Guinness Book ofRecords in record time. The 13-year-old from Rondebosch East
proudly shows off the certificate that he re-cently received to prove his accomplish-ment – building a two-block piston door inMinecraft. If you’re not into online gaming youwon’t
know what this is all about, but he explainsthat Minecraft is an online educationalstrategy game about breaking and placingblocks.“It started with gamers building struc-
tures to protect against monsters, but as thegame grew players worked together to cre-ate wonderful, imaginative things. Now youcanbuild anything inyour imagination. You
can even build whole countries.”Fabio saw the online challenge in Decem-
ber last year competing against thousandsof gamers. He posted his efforts onto the siteand the rest, as they say, is history. While there is no major prize, the young-
ster feels that it is still great to be acknowl-edged as a “world-beater”.“I enjoy playing because it showsmewhat
I can do with my imagination,” he says.Mom,Bridget, added that Fabiomakesher
very proud because he also excels academi-cally. “Hewas selected to participate in eachScience Olympiad at primary school as wellas receiving distinction in the Annual Hori-zon Maths competition last year where hewas 1 of 200 invited to an awards evening atthe Baxter,” she said.“He is a logical thinker hence he excels at
this sort of activity. He’s always had an in-terest in the Guinness record books and cur-rently has 22 editions on his bookshelf.”

Rylands girl wins school feesThaakirah Baradien has had her schoolfees for the year paid for as part of Shop-rite’s “Class of 2016” initiative. The annual competition is open to all
school-going pupils (Grades 1 to 12)across the country and will see morethan 420 of them have their annualschool fees paid for the year.Baardien (9), attends Habiba Primary
School in Rylands and dreams of becom-ing a teacher herself when she grows up.For hermotherKareema, the prize has
changed their lives.“As a parent you want to give your
child the best, but that is not always pos-sible. You stress and you worry aboutmoney but you do it in silence. This hasbeen such a blessing and has really im-pacted on our lives. Thaakirah is such agenerous, kind and compassionate littlegirl who loves school,” she exclaims.Shoprite invited pupils to submit a
short essay or drawing that best de-scribes what they want to be when theygrow up. Winners are chosen through arandom draw by representatives fromevery Shoprite store across the country, with the winning learners’ school feespaid up in full for the entire year. Addi-
tionally, eachwinner receives the equiv-alent amount in vouchers that they canuse for school stationary and other nec-essary educational items. Now in its 10th year, the “Class of” ini-
tiative has already paidmore thanR3.5mschool fees, empowering learners andtheir families each year with the gift ofeducation without having to worryabout the burden of rising school fees.Neil Schreuder, marketing director of
Shoprite, describes the company’s viewon education as being a liberator.“It creates economic freedom and ena-
bles people to reach their full potentialin life. As an organisation we recognisethe enormous value of investing in edu-cation and giving young people the op-portunity to learn, to obtain a qualifica-tion and to acquire the skills needed togain employment. Shoprite’s ‘Class of’competition is really more about inspir-ing learners todreamthananything else.We challenge them to dream big becausewe believe that if we nurture thosedreams and create the educational op-portunities by providing the necessaryfinancing, these children can realisethose dreams.”
Temporary road closures in RylandsThe City of Cape Town has advised resi-dents of temporary road closures to takeplace in Rylands until Tuesday 31 May.The road closures are necessary as part
of the Cape Flats 3 sewer project (CF3).Pooke Road between Carrick and Ester
Roads will be closed temporarily. “Signagewill be displayed warning motorists of theconstruction activities and redirectingthem to alternative routes. It is imperativethat our sewerage infrastructure is main-
tained and upgraded to ensure service de-livery,” reads a City statement.People’s Post has reported extensively
about the CF3 project, which serves 350 000residents in Bonteheuwel, Heideveld, Ma-nenberg, Gugulethu and Nyanga. The construction of the second phase of
theCF3, and the extra capacity thiswill pro-vide, will allow the City to periodically de-commission other sewer infrastructureformaintenance and rehabilitation.

As runners and walkers traverse theroute of this year’s Slave Route Chal-
lenge, manywill trace the footsteps of theirancestors and former slaves.
This year’s Slave Route Challenge, ofwhichPeople’s Post is amedia sponsor, willsee participants giving honour to individu-al slaves of the Cape’s past.
Each runner will carry one of the 8000names of slaves who appear on a “columnof memory” at the Iziko Slave Lodge in thecity centre (“Slave names give runnerswings”,People’s Post, 15March) during therace on Sunday 8 May.
The race route takes runners past sever-al historically significant landmarks, suchas the Castle of Good Hope, Grand Parade, the Whipping Post, Old Slave Church, the
Slave Tree Plaque and the Iziko SlaveLodge.
Life as a slaveMooi Angela fromBengal, also known as
Ansla van Bengalen, was brought to theCape before the large-sale importation ofslaves and before the Slave Lodgewas evenbuilt.
She was brought to the Cape by a DutchEast Indian official, Pieter Kemp, whobought her when stationed in the BatavianRepublic.
Returning from the Netherlands hebrought Angela with him and sold her inCape Town to Jan van Riebeeck in 1655. Hein turn sold her to Abraham Gabbema, thesecond-in-command at the Cape, recountsAngela’s descendent, Lucy Centlivres.
“A very special day in Angela’s life was13 April 1666 when she was granted her in-
dependence,” Centlivres says.Angela petitioned the governor to grant
her a piece of land where she started grow-ing fruit and vegetables which she sold topassing ships. She was granted a plot inwhat is now Castle Street, and would havetraversed many of the streets along whichthe Slave Route Challenge passes. She became a successful farmer and
helped her sons on their farms in the Drak-enstein area. “By the time she died shewasvery well off and her daughter, Anna deKoning, married to Olof Bergh, was therichest woman at the Cape. We could callher the first women entrepreneur at theCape,” says Centlivres.
Remembering ancestorsAlthough uncertain who Angela mar-
ried first, in 1669 she married ArnoldusWillemsz Basson, the founding father of all
the Bassons in South Africa and Centli-vres’ forefather. The Slave Route Challenge is a time for
Centlivres to look back on her history, re-membering and honouring so many of theslaves who built the Cape colony.“I am proud to trace my heritage back to
beautiful, courageous Angela, who didn’tallow horrendous circumstances to get herdown,” she says.
Although Centlivres is not able to runthe routeherself, itwarmsher to think thather ancestors have not been forgotten.“If someone would run the Slave Route
in honour of Angela, I would be thrilled. My ancestors’ histories have enriched mylife and given me a better understandingof the history of my country and the manycolourful personalities in it.”V For more information, visit www.iamrunning-for.co.za.

brought to a culmination of an annual initia-tive aimed at bringing improved vision tothose with special needs and are unable toafford prescription spectacles.“Some (children)were indireneedof spec-
tacles and are now being fitted with specta-cles today. It is a three-stage process. Wefirst have to screen the entire school to seewho needs spectacles.“After that, their eyes get tested and then
they come for the actual fitment,” says Im-raan Roomaney, manager of Muslim HandsSouth Africa.Roomaney says they identified Agape and
Mary Harding as beneficiaries of thisproject as both schools facilitated children
with special needswith their own respectivechallenges.“We like to thank our sponsors and donors
formaking it possible for us to carry out thisproject. This is one of our big projects for theyear. It was very successful due to the sup-port of the community and we are very gladto see the smiles on the faces of the children, giving thembetter vision and improving thequality of their life.”Project 4 Sight, although an annual
project, is not limited to being run on an an-nual basis, says Roomaney.“It is quite simple. You make an appoint-
ment to see us. We look at your school’sneedsand theamount of students thatwearelooking at for doing the eye test. AlthoughI said this was once a year – if the need isthere, we will definitely assist those whocome forward and if we have the budget, wewill try to assist.”V For more information about Muslim Hands and theirprojects contact 021 633 6413 or visit www.muslim-hands.org.za or send an email to mail@muslim-hands.org.za.

BRIDGETOWN
Sport, recreationprogrammes for allAt the Bridgetown Community Centre in
Athlone, play leader Quinton Meyer ispassionate about delivering recreation pro-grammes.
This comes after the City of Cape Town’ssport, recreation and amenities departmentcommitted over 80 staff members and mil-lions of rand to provide recreation pro-grammes which contribute to social cohe-sion and a healthy lifestyle among residentsand communities.
“Recreation is important because manyyoung people do not qualify for formal sportscodes and club membership.
“Our recreation programmes are accessi-ble to everyone and you don’t need to be anace at something to participate. Here theyouth have an opportunity to get involvedin recreational activities, which empowersthem and improves their self-esteem andconfidence,” says Meyer.
Meyer believes the activities presented atthe centre have the potential to empower theentire community.“I would like to have apositive impact on this community in a waywhere people of all walks of life can come toone venue, with one common goal. Our com-munity needs to take ownership of the pro-grammes and I would like to see young peo-ple excel in the various codes.”
The City’s policy for sport and recreationensures that programmes are offered in linewith the needs and interests of the communi-ty. Meyer explains the policy ensures theybecome more inclusive and adapt their pro-grammes to all ages and they hope by doingit they will be able to reach the whole family.
“The policy also helps us to monitor the
effectiveness of our programmes,” Meyersays.
Research indicates that sustained involve-ment in sport and recreation programmescan help to combat challenges in communi-ties such as alcohol and drug abuse, crimeand vandalism.
Currently there are 55 established hubs orrecreation centres throughout Cape Town, where over 12 000 residents of all ages partic-ipate in recreational programmes weekly.V For more information about the programmes, resi-dents should call 021 824 2775.
Quinton Meyer from Athlone hopes the newrecreational programme policy creates a moreinclusive environment for communities tointeract with each other.

Residents of Sonneblom Street in Bridge-town recently formed a street committeeaimed at improving the infrastructure ofthe area as well as attending to challengesfacing residents.
This has also formed part of Suzette Lit-tle’s development process for ward 49 forthe beautification of the area.
Communities have been encouraged toimplement sustainable solutions thatwould enhance the environment.
The committee submitted a request toLittle to have the road widened. The roadhas always very narrow, but there is suf-ficient space to widen the road. It was also
suggested the road be converted into aone-way street, to reduce congestion.
The committee also formed an associa-tion with Dion Fuller and The St. Moni-ca’s Home in Bo-Kaap whereby he provid-ed and planted trees for the residents ofSonneblom Street. Each household re-ceived two trees.
In another project in Bridgetown, thecorner of Bosduif and Tarantaal roads un-derwent an extensive clean-up. The roadshave been illegal dumping hotspots andin recent months have just created a ha-ven for criminal activity, according toLittle.V For more information on how to get involved withany of these initiatives, contact Suzette Little’s of-fice on 021 638 0964.

Hilton Murray and James Chevallier, running partners to Anita Engelbrechtand Chaeli Mycroft will be taking part in this year’s comrade marathonwhich has allowed wheelchair assisted people for the very first time.
Comrades history in the makingTIYESE JERANJI
@jeranji
Chaeli Sports and RecreationClub (CSRC) in Plumstead isover the moon because their
wheelchair assisted activists willbe participating in the 2016 Com-rades marathon in Durban laternext month.Chaeli Mycroft (21) and Anita
Engelbrecht (22) will be the firstwheelchair athletes ever to partici-pate in the Comrades Marathon. The 91st edition of the world’s
biggest and oldest ultra-marathonwill take place on Sunday 29 May.They will be assisted by their run-ning partners on the 89km uphillrun from Pietermaritzburg to Dur-ban. These two dynamic ability ac-tivists challenged the ComradesMarathon Rule (CMA) that stated“no wheelchairs or mechanicalaids” would be allowed entry intothe Comrades.Mycroft, an ability activist and
adventurer who was born with ce-rebral palsy, is a spastic quadriple-gic and has a degenerative neurop-athy. She is currently studying foran honours degree in social policyandmanagement at the Universityof Cape Town. Mycroft says it isgreat to see CMA and ASA uphold-ing the rights provided by SouthAfrica’s constitution.“People with disabilities are of-
ten sidelined by society, and this isan opportunity to show that we areactive and capable members of our
communities.”Engelbrecht, who is an ability
activist, cyclist and runner, wasborn with cerebral palsy and is aspastic diplegic. She is in her thirdyear doing her Bachelor in Com-merce degree at Stellenbosch Uni-versity. Engelbrecht says: “Onlythose who attempt the absurd canachieve the impossible.”Zelda Mycroft, the CSRC chief
executive officer, says this is histo-ry in the making. “This is greatnews. We couldn’t be happier. Thispaves the way for more greatthings. The CSRC and Chaeli Cam-paign look forward to partneringCMAandASA in growingmore op-portunities forwheelchair athletesto enter the mainstreammarathonand ultra-marathon arenas to con-tinue growing awareness that abil-ity comes in all shapes and forms.Inclusive sport inspires and is ben-eficial to all who practise it as wellas the spectators and administra-tors who cheer on our brave ath-letes.”Though today they have some-
thing to celebrate, it wasn’t a walkin the park to have these two in-cluded in the marathon. This rul-ing, started with engagement withCMA in February. After being de-nied, they never gave up. Theyfought harder and even had a peti-tion going around so that theycould be included.Making the announcement last
week, Macdonald Chitja, the CMAchairperson, said CMA has noted
and is in the process of imple-menting a directive from ASAthat two wheelchair assisted par-ticipants be permitted to partici-pate in the 2016 Comrades Mara-thon.“The CMA welcomes this his-
toric decision for our sport andwe embrace it in line with thespirit of the Comrades Mara-thon’s values andvisionof equali-ty and inclusivity.”Chitja added it was important
to note that the two athletes (My-croft and Engelbrecht) have com-plied with the standard qualify-ing times and entry requirementsfor the race, and that no specialprovisionhas beenmade for themin this respect, nor will they re-ceive any special treatment as bo-na fide participants in the race.Chitja reiterated that the safety
of all Comrades runners is theCMA’s biggest priority.“As organisers our primary
concern is the safety of all partici-pants and as a matter of urgencywe will be consulting with vari-ous role-players in a process of re-assessing our medical, technical, safety and security and logisticalarrangements to determine possi-ble impacts and necessary adjust-ments which we may need to im-plement in order to ensure thereis no compromise to the well-be-ing of all participants.”Mycroft and Engelbrecth quali-
fied for the event in the Red Hillmarathon earlier this year.
Are youman enough to tell the world aboutthe important women in your life?An important essay competition has been
launched to celebrate the 60th anniversaryof the August 1956 Women’s March on theUnion Buildings in Pretoria in protestagainst the extension of passes towomen bythe apartheid regime. While many women-focused cultural and
political events are being planned to markthe contribution of SouthAfricanwomen tothe struggle for liberation, the call for es-says is but one decisive way to bring theconsidered voices of men into the mix.The motivation for this initiative is that
ten years ago Beulah Thumbadoo andAsso-ciates, a publishing company inWoodstock, put together a book, “The Face of the Spirit, illuminating a century of essays by SouthAfricanWomen” for theDepartment ofArtsand Culture.“To mark the 60th anniversary we would
like to hear from men; any and as manySouth African men as are willing to take
part,” says Thumbadoo.“Our theme is the struggles of men with
women, so you can write about anythingyou believe will make a difference and thatwill add to our understanding of you.“Do you have something you’d like to say
to your grandmother, mother, a formerwife, a current partner, a sister, an aunt, your daughter, or a former teacher? “Writeto the women in your life and tell themwhatever you think might help us all to un-derstand each other better and curtail thepolarity between us.”The essays that best portray the personal
concerns, hopes and desires of South Afri-canmen, andhave the judgeswanting everySouth African to read them in the interestsof nation building, will be shortlisted, andthe intention is that a selection of the bestessays will be published in a book with theworking title “Words left Unspoken”.V For more information visit www.beulahthumba-doo.co.za. Teenage pregancy in Cape Town has de-creased, officials say.Andalthough the resultswill only be final-
ised in the next month or two, the City ofCapeTownhaveexpressed their enthusiasmwith the early signs that the teenage preg-nancy rate has declined even further year onyear.
For the year 2015 there has been a drop inthe number of teenage births comparedwiththe previous year.Of the 69 908 live births recorded in 2015,
2704 were to mothers under the age of 18.This accounted for 3.87% of all births.“This is very good news indeed and I want
to applaud our young women and men whoare taking responsibility for their sexualhealth,” says Mayco member for Health Si-yabulela Mamkeli.“We need to stop clinging to the belief that
young children will listen to us whenwe tellthem to abstain. Ideally, yes, but the fact isthat many are having sex and so it is our re-sponsibility to make sure that they do so re-sponsibly. Looking at the figures, it is clearthatmore andmore young people are takingthat responsibility, but also that the inter-ventions are hitting the mark.”
School outreach programmes have be-come a crucial intervention for City Health.OnWednesday 13April, Mamkeli addressedpupils at Rocklands Secondary School aspart of the outreach programme.
“In a nutshell, it is about educating youngpeople on issues pertaining to teen sexualhealth, making good life choices and alsohow they can access services to prevent un-wanted pregnancies or sexually transmittedinfections,” Mamkeli explains to People’sPost. “Schools are but one of the locationsidentified to engage with young people. CityHealth has also identified sport and recrea-tion hubs, libraries and various pro-grammes offered by the Social Development
andEarlyChildhoodDirectorate as opportu-nities to engage with the target audience.”Mamkeli has since been invited to speak
at Glendale High and Rocklands.“It is still a challenge to get some schools
to agree to us engagingwith their pupils, butwe are seeing greaterwillingness on the partof some and I commend those principals andschool governing bodies. Ignorance is nolonger a defence – children need to learntheir various subjects, but I believe that re-productive health is probably one of themost crucial aspects of LifeOrientation. Themore we educate our young people, the bet-
ter choices they are able to make,” addedMamkeli.
He explains the Health Department staffalso do ongoing outreach work in their re-spective sub-districts.
City Health has eight sub-districts acrossthe metropole. Mamkeli says they are alsolooking to create youth clinics outside exis-iting clinics. “We are trying to create asmany platforms as possible to engage withyouth. Inside the clinics, we are providingongoing training to healthcare workers tosensitise them to the needs of young people, prioritising adolescents attending clinics
and fast-tracking them using queue mar-shals, but also making educational materialavailable in waiting areas,” says Mamkeli.“Ideally we would also want to build more
youth clinics. However, CityHealth has a re-sponsibility to all communities to provideservices and unfortunately we do not haveunlimited funding that can address the de-mands of all the different interest groups. We therefore have to be very strategic interms ofwhere services are rolled out, basedon where the greatest need is – according toour annual statistics.”City Health partnered with a number of
organisations in 2015 talking to teenagehealth issues.“Ideally, young people should abstain un-
til they are old enough to dealwith thepoten-tial consequences of unprotected sex – likebeing able to care independently for a baby. However, we know that young people are ex-perimenting and so we need to ensure thatthey are as well prepared against the risk ofpregnancy and sexually transmitted infec-tions as possible,” says Mamkeli.
Part of their intervention includes dis-pensing contraception and advice at clinics, and during outreach campaigns at schoolsand other forums.“We need to continue educating young
people and raising awareness on the choicesavailable to them andmake those options aseasily accessible as possible. An informedyoung person is a healthy young person. Wealso need to start addressing the attitudes ofsome parents and larger communities – ig-norance will get us nowhere. We need tostart talking to children about their sexualhealth and well-being and if you as a parentor guardian do not feel comfortable doing it,take the child to the clinic or an NGO work-ing in your community – but we need to getthe message out,” he says.City Health and its partners are hoping to
provide reproductive health services to atleast 40 000 young people under the age of 18in this financial year.

Sunday nights at Swingers inWetton have become the place
to be with the supper club givingmusic lovers more than tastytreats. This initiative has seen the “re-
union” of the group Out of Townwho are the core band for the even-ing, featured with some specialguests every week.Keyboard man Camillo Lom-
bard, an integral part of the band, has grown into one of the giants inthe music industry. But this is theband that started him on the pathto really finding his feet in the mu-sic business.“When I started with Out of
Town in 1991, I was wet behind theears where themusic industrywasconcerned,” he remembers.“Being the youngest in the band
was an experience I will never for-get. Bassist Lionel Beukes was theleader who arranged all the re-hearsals and gigs. He left a hugeimpression on me in the profes-sional way in which he conductedhimself.“Where the music was con-
cerned he expandedmymusical di-et by introducing me to artists likeKeith Jarret, Jeff Lorber, ChickCorea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sam-ple, Abdullah Ibrahim, Mcoy Tyn-er, Yellow Jackets, Koinonia, Mez-zoForté, SpyroGyraandmanyoth-er artists, allowing me to emulatetheir solos and learn the art of im-provisation.”Another member of the band
that impressed the young musi-cian was legendary drummerDen-ver Furness. “He is also known asthe “Fiery” Furness and his prow-ess on the drums influenced andstrengthened my sense of rhythmand tempo.”Camillo also explained how the
experience taught him the value ofversatility. “We became the back-ing band of choice for so many ofthe big names because we couldadd to the gig with our backing vo-cal talents. Those years we backedpeople like Leslie Kleinsmith, Rob-bie Jansen, Terry Fortune, VernonCastle, Sandra Butler and manymore at venues likeClubMontreal,Baker Street, Midnight Moves, Ro-sie’s & all that Jazz and the The

Sunday sessions in Wetton hasseen some changes with his role inthe group. “Being reunited withthe guys now after 20 years, hasbeen a bit of a paradigm shift,” hereflects. “I have since been equip-ping myself with skills and havebecome musical director to manySouth African and internationalartists. So these days I find myselfin thedrivers seat, giving guidanceand advice to the rest of the band. There is definitely much loveamong themembers andwe simplylove sharing the stage together.”V Admission is free for the Sunday NightSupper Session. Fuel price increase not just a numberAs of Wednesday 6 April, the cost of a litre
of fuel has shot up by between 81 centsa litre and 98 cents a litre depending on thefuel you use.
According to a press release by the Auto-mobile Association (AA) Petrol 95 has in-creased by 88c/l, 93 by between 81c/l and86c/l. The cost of a litre of 93 unleaded petrolinland is now R12.32 (up from R11.46) andR11.94 for litre of petrol at the coast (up fromR11.13).
The 30c/F increase to the Fuel Levy, an-nounced by Finance Minister Pravin Gord-
han during his budget speech in February, has been added to the price adjustments.
This additional 30c/F has moved the FuelLevy – a tax collected on every litre of fuelsold – from R2.55 to R2.85 a litre. The moneycollected through the Fuel Levy is adminis-tered by the National Treasury, and is treat-ed as a general tax, not, as many people as-sume, only for road-related expenses.
For many, the fuel price is merely a num-ber on a pump that they need to pay whenfilling their tank. But the cost of this essen-tial commodity is much more than that; it
is made up of many different costs that, to-gether, constitute thepetrol price. This priceis adjusted monthly based on a number offactors, mainly international petroleum pri-ces, and the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate.
The Basic Fuel Price (BFP) is calculatedon costs associated with shipping petroleumproducts from the Mediterranean area, Ara-bian Gulf and Singapore. These include in-surance, storage, and wharfage and the costto use harbour facilities when off-loading pe-troleum. Other costs associated includetransport costs (from the harbour to other
areas), customs and excise duties, the retailmargins paid to fuel station owners, and sec-ondary storage costs. Importantly, these oth-er costs also include the Fuel Levy, and theRoad Accident Fund (RAF) Levy.
Currently these other costs total R7.06 forinland users, and R6.73 for coastal users, perlitre of 93 unleaded petrol. Of this, a revisedfigure of R2.85 is allocated to the Fuel Levy, and R1.54 to RAF Levy.
This means that for every litre of coastalpetrol costing R11.94, close to 37% is allocat-ed to the levies.

EDUCATION
Many ways to learnThroughout your child’s school career, theyhave been tasked with growing amounts ofhomework, assignments and tests. Howev-er, as they proceed from grade to grade, thework pressure increases, potentially leav-ing your child feeling flustered.
Creating a schedule, together with yourchild, will help your child prioritise theirtime and create a sense of control. But whathappens when it’s time to buckle down tostudy, and the information doesn’t stick?
Conventional parrot-style studying mayleave your child feeling anxious or despond-ent. Each child is unique in their abilities, and study techniques don’t generally formpart of the school curriculum. This is a greatway for parents to offer assistance, and gothrough aprocess of elimination to establishthe most successful method.
A study has been completed to categorisefour learning styles or preferences whichcould help your child absorb and interpretinformation. This is called theVARKmodal-ities, which has been split to have a specificfocus on visual, aural, read andwrite or kin-aesthetic stimulation.
VisualVisually predominant study techniques
require the study areas be void of any visualdistractions. The only visually appealingmaterial should be study notes. Informationis best consumed through pictures, dia-grams and graphs. Utilise brightly colourstationery to accentuate key information. The use of online videos and flash cards aregreat tools too.
AuralA study space should be clear of auditory
distractions. These learners consume infor-mation best though spoken word format.Study groups work great if you are able to
find students with similar learning trends.Recorded discussions and lectures can be re-peated ina conducive environment andyourchild will create recitations and jingles ofkey information.
Read and WriteThis is probably themost traditional of all
study modes. From the classroom to home, your childwill constantly need to takenotes,re-read notes and hand outs along with ac-cessing additional information through var-ious mediums. The regurgitation of the in-formation will be interpreted and noted ina manner which is easier to consume.
KinaestheticThroughout your child’s life, they are
taught to sit still, be quiet, and face the front. However, young active minds are housed inyoung active bodies, which thrive on physi-cal activity. If your child chooses to lay onthe floor flicking their legs, or pace whenstudying let thembe.Themovement pacifiesthe body’s instinct to be active, freeing themind to absorb. This category of student isusually only able to study in short blocks oftime, with an accompanying distraction ofsqueezing a stress ball or listening to music. It’s not a study method encouraged, but ithas proven to be a successful method forsome children. A kinaesthetic learner likesto make use of examples and associationsrather thanplain facts and is further compli-mented through Aural study techniqueswith other scholars.
Visit http:/vark-learn.com to help you de-cipher a study mode and tools to best suityour child.V This column was contributed by False Bay TVET Col-lege. Look out for more study success strategies in Peo-ple’s Post in the last week of every month or go towww.falsebaycollege.co.za to find out more.

LETTERS
Investigatenumber ofpolice deathsThus far, more than 80 police officershave been killed this year.
This should elicit at least a commis-sion of enquiry by national government. The number of killings equates tonearly 20 per month or two per day.
The slaying of Detective LindekileSikade from Philippi East, Metro Policeofficer Simon Sigasa from Johannesburgand others, is strongly condemned, butwhat recourse do we have after thecondemnation of the dastardly murders?
If the perpetrators are targeting lawenforcement officers solely for theirfirearms in order to commit furtheracts of crime, wherein lies the solutionto end the heinous killings?
Unless this stark reality is addressedswiftly, less young men and women willenter the policing services, albeit itpolice or the municipal Metro Policeservices.
Statistics indicate that there is a hugeshortfall of police officers in the West-ern Cape.
I implore national police commission-er to initiate a national commission ofenquiry in respect of the atrocity tostop the killings, and rid civil society ofthe cowardly perpetrators and illegalunlicensed firearms.
MARK KLEINSCHMIDTKenwyn
Stand against killingsLast week we have once again beenshaken, shocked and rattled by thebrutal killing of one of our own, Detect-ive Constable Sekadi from the GrassyPark police service centre.
He was a valuable asset to our commu-nity, has been ruthless in bringinglaw-breakers before the court andexposing the dark side of the gangunderworld.
As a community we want to expressour condolences, and unequivocally statethat we do not condone the brutalslaying of our police officers, or anymember of society. As a community wevalue our police officers, in whatevercapacity they may serve us.
Once again it is a call to our leaders, those in authority – decision makers, politicians and government – to listenand respond to the cry of our people.Once again we see a system dismallyfailing us, where those who must upholdand protect society, fall victim to thevery system they must uphold.
Our justice system fails us time andtime again. Our police service is under-staffed, underresourced and its membersare under paid. Correctional servicesdelivers and feeds into our communitiesthe products of a failing prison system
(with exception to those who reshapedtheir lives), and when we add all up, theoutcome is that the innocent, the uprightand the community heroes are carriedaway in wooden boxes to their lastresting place.
Absent at the time of distress, tears, heartache and bereavement, are thepoliticians, the ministers and govern-ment.
As a community we have the power toinfluence decisions, budgets, systems, policies and ways of thinking. We mustget involved in community projects, programmes and initiatives. We mustbecome more vocal and speak outagainst unjust and ungodly systems, participate in forums, structures and allother platforms, and above all, hold ourleaders, MECs, councillors and serviceproviders accountable.
Let the death of our fallen heroes, children, elderly and youth not be invain. Let the spilled blood of the inno-cent speak to the righteous, cry out tothe heart of our community and let ourresponse be: “yes we will take up thecourse, yes we will unite against allforces of darkness and overcome”!
PASTOR PAUL PHILLIPParkwood
Who is behind the shootings?Regarding gangs on the Cape Flats:
I am always very saddened when Ihear of the innocent people being killedfor no reason by these sub-humans, andother innocents maimed for life. Thesegangsters have no understanding of thepain and suffering they deliberatelycause through their madness.
But my biggest concern is: Who issupplying them the ammunition?
We know that many firearms arestolen and many are even supplied byother sub-humans but where does theammunition come from?
Why do we not hear of that?Surely if the suppliers of ammunition
can be identified, prosecuted and sen-tenced to lengthy jail terms then perhapsthere should be a drop in the killings. When these sub-humans are arrestedwith the guns surely the police shouldbe able to extract that information of thesuppliers of the ammunition.
I ask: Can it be that some policemenare supplying them so we do not hearabout that?

The 2016 edition of the annualCouncillor’s Legacy Cup Tour-
nament lastweekend sawdozens ofexcited children from Gugulethuand Manenberg competing for tophonours. The event took place attheNY49 sports field inGugulethu, with six schools participating thisyear.Siyabulela Mamkeli, the City’s
councillor for ward 45, started thetournament in 2013 and this yearR70 000 from ward allocation fund-ing was directed towards this in-clusive event. He says the aim of the tourna-
ment is to bridge the divide be-
tween theManenberg andGugulet-hu communities and tournamentsof this nature provide a platformfor youth to learn each other’s cul-tures and to embrace diversity. Inaddition, events like this play acritical role in promoting good be-haviour by steering young peopleaway from antisocial behaviour.“The Siyavuselela Life Skills
Projects, a community-based orga-nisation, was instrumental in or-ganising the event. This is a goodexample of the City’s strategy topartner with organisations to bet-ter build on, share and utilise re-sources to create ameaningful and
sustainable impact on the lives ofyoung people,” says Mamkeli.Mamkeli reiterates that the
Councillor’s Legacy Cup Tourna-ment exemplifies the City’s com-mitment to making progress possi-ble together by using sport as a toolto teach young people importantlife skills.Lwazi Primary School was
crowned the 2016 Councillor’s Leg-acy Cup Tournament winners andBantuAdonis scooped theplayer ofthe tournament award.Medals andsoccer balls were awarded to all ofthe teams that participated in thetournament.

CHEVON BOOYSEN@ChevonBooysen
She has overcome many challenges, in-cluding goingblind three years ago andrecently losing her mother.
But Jody Clarke won’t let this hold herback.
Clarke (18) is completing her matric yearat Fairmount High – a mainstream schoolset on the border of Parkwood.People’s Post previously reported (“Blind
teen doesn’t give up”, 8 December) on Clarkeafter she graduated at the League of Friendsof The Blind (Lofob) days after receiving thenews she progressed to Grade 12.
And now Clarke, in her final school year, will be able to excel further after receivingassistive devices.
These include a computer with speechsoftware and scanner with the help of Lofoband the Lions Club of Bergvliet.
These devices will enhance Jody’s accessto information and the quality of her educa-tion.
Clarke joined Lofob’s independence devel-opment programme in 2013 where she ac-quired skills to be independent and integrat-ed within society.
The devices were handed over officially toClarke during a ceremony held at Lofob onThursday.
Philip Bam, who was the master of cere-monies and received many accolades for hisinvolvement in the blindness sector, refersto the devices as “enabling devices” insteadof assistive.
“These devices and technology presentedto Clarke today will serve to enable her toprogress and do better.
“She will now be able to compete with oth-ers at the same school. And I think it’s agreat thing because Lofob has been involvedin enabling visually impaired people formany years now and we are grateful for thepartnership with the Lions Club,” Bam says.
Public relations officer Heidi Volkwijn, who refers to Clarke as her blind sister, says
this is an exciting time for her.“Three years ago Clarke came to Lofob aft-
er she went blind following an operation toremove her brain tumour.
“We asked her what she wanted to do nextandshe said shedidnotwant to go toa schoolfor the blind; she wanted to complete herschooling at Fairmount,” Volkwijn recalls.
In 2014Clarke repeatedGrade 10 andwhenshe went on to Grade 11 she encountered an-other hurdle when she was told by doctors
that her tumour was back, only this timetwice as big as the first time.
Down but not out, Clark had to undergosurgery which doctors thought might leaveher further disabled or dead.
Six weeks later, Clark returned to schooland was ready for the challenge ahead ofcompleting Grade 11.
At the start of 2016, Clark entered the gatesof Fairmount High School as a matric stu-dent with the determination and vigour totake on the world. Like Clarke, there aremany blind learners who Lofob assiststhrough it’s support to inclusive educationprogramme.
Volkwijn adds that Lofob aims to assistthose who want to pursue their educationafter being declared blind.
“When one is blind and you do not havea matric certificate you face a double barri-er. And this is why we have embarked onworking with schools in the province andadapting these schools for blind or visuallyimpaired learners,” she says.
Fairmount High principal Terrence Klas-sen says Clarke is a pleasure to have at theschool adding that accommodating a visual-ly impaired pupil is a first for their school.
“When Clarke said she wanted to comeback to the school, we welcomed her backandwedidnot seeher as onewith an impedi-ment. When we welcomed her back we didnot know the challenges we would face be-cause the school does not have the facilitiesand we did not have the rights. All we hadwas the relationship that was built over theyears with Lofob,” Klassen said.
Looking beyond her challenges
Jody Clarke, a blind matriculant at Fairmount High, received assistive devices on Thursday. Thehandover was made possible through roleplayers at League of Friends of the Blind in GrassyPark and the Lions Club of Bergvliet. PHOTOS: CHEVON BOOYSEN

BEN BURGER
For Tristan Brooks karate is a lifestylerather than a sport. Not surprisingly, the Grade 11 learner from Rondebosch
Boys’ High School is the number one fighterin his age group in the country.Tristan has been named the People’s Post
Let’s Play Sport Star of theMonth forMarchand April. He was nominated by his dad, Neil, who
says that Tristan is currently ranked num-ber one inSouthAfrica (u.17) both inKumite(fighting) and Kata (the sequence of moves),the two disciplines of Kimura Shukokai Ka-rate.“He travelled to New York in 2012 repre-
senting South Africa in the KSI World Tour-nament and again in 2014, this time in SunCity. In July he will be travelling to Berlin,Germany for the KSI 2016 World Tourna-ment. In September last year Tristan com-peted against the best in Europe at the KSIEuropean Open Championships in Luzerne,Switzerland narrowly losing in the final,”says Neil.According to Tristan he loves karate be-
cause of the intense training. “I love thephysical side of the intense training sched-ules and competitions, but a high level ofmental discipline is required to carry outthis lifestyle. My Sensei calls us all crazy forwhatwe do and it is the sense of brotherhoodthat keeps me motivated.”He trains four times a week and loves be-
ing in the gym. “As well as my karate train-ing, which is a 90 minute class four days aweek, I try to include a boxing fitness classonce a week and I can always be found inthe gym during my spare time on the week-end. But I like to think that a fighter is al-ways training and bettering himself in ev-erything he does in every aspect of life. Ihave taken a recent liking to calisthenicswhich is pure bodyweight training requir-ing inhuman strength to push your body tonew levels.”Forhim, karate is awayof life, rather than
a sport. “I guess that I have been involvedwith karate for most of my life, since agefive, and in all the years of training that hasdeveloped my passion for this martial art. Iplay rugby at school, and also enjoy athlet-ics, but we do not consider martial arts tobe a sport, it is away of life. All other variousforms of exercise are all geared towards mylife in karate.“Since a young age my order of priorities
has been my Christian faith followed by myfamily, second to those are school and thentraining. When you have your priorities setbefore you, everything else falls into place.I strongly feel that once you have startedtraining in this form of martial arts, it is im-possible to stop. It is a lifetime journey.”Tristan says he looks up to his karate hero
Shihan (master instructor) Chris Thompsonwho holds an 8th Dan and is a World Chief
Instructor. “The control that he has over hisbody is unbelievable to witness and he alsois a perfect gentleman towards all. The timeand dedication he has shown towards Kimu-ra Shukokai Karate is unbelievable and Ihope to one day be half the man he is.”Tristan says that his participation in the
USA in 2012 was his first international tour-nament and it was a real eye-opener for him.“It made me realise what a journey I hadahead of myself if I wanted to be the best Icould. Seeinghowhardother countrieswerepushing, made me want to train even hard-er. Another highlight was the friends I havemade at these events. Meeting new peoplefromall over the globe is a truly phenomenalopportunity that karate has given me.”He says that if it was not for the support
ofhis parents, hewouldnothavemade it thisfar. “Without their support and withoutthem constantly pushing me I would havenever reached the level I am at today.”Tristan might even be regarded as Cape
Town’s own Karate Kid. He was part of ademo team for the launch of the remake ofthe original 1984moviewhenTheKarateKidwas launched in 2010 at Cavendish.V You can nominate any pupil between the ages of13 and 18 as the sport star of the month by sendingemail to ben.burger@media24.com. Clearly write thesubject as Sports Star. You need to mention theachievements of the nominee in detail and the emailshould be shorter than 300 words. The decision of thejudges is final.
Mr Miyagi wouldbe very proud
Tristan Brooks at the 2015 KSI South AfricanNational Championship at UCT where he wona Gold medal for Kumite (fighting) Silver forUnison kata (a threeman synchronised katateam event) and Bronze for individual Kata.

It has been dubbed “The Super-7s SoccerMania Event” and come Friday eveningthe scene is set for an exciting three-day
football festival. The event promises to change the face of
the sport for the budding youth in identify-ing potential stars and developing talentacross the Cape Peninsula.
Thus the second annual showpiece of thehost club Salt River Blackpool will be playedon the Friday 29, Saturday 30 April and Mon-day 2 May at the Shelley Road sports com-plex in Salt River.
Tournament director Iqbal Kasker said atthe official launch and tournament drawlaunch held the Fountains Hotel that theplanning for the 2016 version of the tourna-ment had commenced a few weeks after lastyear’s event and that the success of lastyear’s tournament subsequently had to in-crease the entry of teams from 48 to 64.
“I want to thank all the participatingclubs. Last year we had 16 teams in each ofthe u.7, u.9 and u.11 divisions. Due to inter-est and demand for entry this year we see16 teams in u.8, 24 teams in u.10 and 24 teamsin the u.12 division. This growth in entry isphenomenal from year one and we, the orga-
nizers our thanks again to the clubs for theirinterest. This year the SRBFC Super 7s haveattracted clubs from all over Cape Town, which includes areas such as Camps Bay,Milnerton, Atlantis, Somerset West, Khaye-litsha, Blue Downs, Grassy Park and theCity Bowl District. “Then professional clubssuch as Ajax Cape Town, Santos and MilanoUnited will also be participating this year.”
Kasker also said a football tournament ofthis size cannot do without sponsors and do-nors to assist the club in hosting a profes-sionally run tournament. “Likewise SedickAdams of the Leisure Hotel Group for gener-ously offering this venue for the launch anddraw. Your generosity of spirit and willing-ness to partner with us to stage the tourna-ment will touch the lives of all our partici-pants and help us to create football andsporting memories for our future profes-sional and national team players.”
“The important thing that we want to pro-mote is youth football and growth. Winnersof the tournament will get a floating trophyand medals. The runners up will get medals, and the plate section will also get a trophy. Then there’s the individual awards like theplayer of the tournament, goalkeeper of thetournament and even the coach of the tour-nament.”
