Its Beginning . . .

Recognizing the serious need for education and training in the areas of

pediatric trauma and injury prevention, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation established the Pediatric

Trauma Program in 1994.

Our Mission . . .

Why Pediatric Trauma?

Why PTP?

• Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.

• Unintentional injury kills more kids every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide!

Why PTP?

• These injuries cost society $157 billion1 annually!

• 90% of these injuries could be prevented!

1 Includes direct medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life

How Do We Address These Needs?

– The Foundation’s partnership with six children’s hospitals connects the Kiwanis family to the issue of Pediatric Trauma

– Utilizing the knowledge and expertise of our partner hospitals, we identify projects the Kiwanis family can undertake to address the issue of Pediatric Trauma

What is PediatricEmergency Medicine?

• Developed in 1992

• 1,446 PEM physicians (as of 2008)

• One qualified PEM physician for every 22,000 children visiting the ER!

PEM Physicians . . .

• Specialize in the care of acutely ill or injured children and teens

• Treat a wide range of medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are often life threatening

• Meet the unique medical needs of children, including giving medications and using equipment in specific ways

• Diagnose problems in distressed, uncooperative children

Why is This Important?

• One third of the approximately 99 million ER visits each year is for a child

• Many not receiving appropriate or timely care due to the staff’s lack of pediatric training and experience

Why is This Important?

• Immediate access to quality pediatric emergency medical care is critical!

• “The Golden Hour”

• Babies and children are not “little people” - Their needs are vastly different than an adult’s need

The Foundation provides funding to train a physician in Pediatric

Emergency Medicine; nearly $100,000 a year!

How Does Kiwanis Fit In?

• Our Kiwanis Doctor travels throughout the CNH District training other doctors, nurses and first responders

• Focus on outlying areas within the District; Yuba City, El Centro, Barstow

The Result

The long-term impact of this training will save countless children whose lives might

otherwise be lost.

As a result of our Foundation’s commitment to fund the first fellow, the hospital was able to fund an additional fellow . . .from Japan!

He is the first doctor in Japan with PEM training!

How to Distribute HelmetsIf distributing helmets at a community event, remember the following . . .

• Never distribute helmets directly to the child; partner with another agency/organization trained to properly size helmets

• Don’t just give away the helmet; have the child earn the helmet by participating in a safety class, bicycle rodeo, etc.

Child Safety Seats90% - 95% of child safety seats are used or installed incorrectly!

• Educate the community on Child Safety Seat Laws

• Recycle (not re-use!) sub-standard safety seats

• Work with your local Police Dept./CHP to sponsor a Child Safety Seat Inspection event

Water SafetyA child can drown in as little as ONE INCH of water!

• Educate your community on water and drowning hazards.

• Sponsor an “April Pool Day” event

• The Foundation can provide you with a list of water safety games

Home SafetyEach year, an average of 2,096 children ages 14 and under

die as a result of a home injury!

Educate parents about

common dangers found

around the home

Crib SafetyEach year, cribs and playpens are responsible for half of all nursery product-

related deaths among children ages 5 and under!

• Educate parents and thrift stores on the dangers of older cribs

• Put together a “Recycling” program with your city

Poison PreventionMore than 90% of all poison exposure happens in the home!

• Educate parents and children about hidden hazards in the home

• Keep it serious, but make it fun!

Choking HazardsChildren sustain approximately 18,000 suffocation

injuries each year!

• Children can choke on small objects

• Educate the community about age appropriate toys

• Distribute choke tubes to measure toys and parts

• Toilet paper rolls work well too!
