History of the University
Organization of the University
Osaka University has 11 faculties/schools, 15 graduate schools, five research institutes, 23 facilities affiliated with the faculties/schools, graduate schools or research institutes, libraries with three branches, two hospitals, and 3 nationwide and 20 university joint-use facilities. The three campuses in Suita, Toyonaka and Minoh cities and Nakanoshima area occupy a total area of 1.444 million m2. There are about 5,100 teaching and administrative staff and 25,600 students.
Osaka University was established in 1931 as the sixth imperial university. But it’ s scientific roots can be
traced back to the open-minded and progressive tradition of the Osaka merchant culture of the Edo-period.
Osaka University has supplied Japanese society with a great number of women and men of high talent.
It is also well known and admired in the international community for its outstanding achievements in various scientific research
fields. Having celebrated the 75th anniversary of its foundation in May 2006, the university is enlisting all of its talent to take a
bold leap forward. Our goal is to become a “university of world caliber” by advancing the university’ s decade-old motto “Live
Locally, Grow Globally”.
