Poliomyelitis
Viral infection of anterior horn cells
Causing permanent paralysis of isolated groups of muscles
Clinical features
The affected limb is wasted and deformed
The paralytic limb is floppy( LMNL)
±Scoliosis
±Short limb
Normal sensation
Principles of Treatment
)1(Isolated muscle weakness without deformity
( a )Quadriceps paralysis = Splint Or Surgery
( b )Weak thumb opposition = Tendon transfer
(2 )Unbalanced Paralysis) One group is paralysed(
(a )Passively corrected = Splint OR Tendon Transfer
)b (Fixed Deformity = Surgery( Correction + Stabilization)
) c (Paralytic Scoliosis = Spinal fixation
•(3 )Balanced Paralysis) Flial Joint( :
Permanent Splintage OR Arthrodesis
(4 )Limb Shortening : ˂ 3 cm = Raised Shoe
˃ 3 cm = Limb Lenghening
