Organic Make-up
A very vast and interesting category that Organicshop.in has decided to zoom its lens during our
pro-organic cosmetic drive through our campaign Organic Cosmos Week is Make-up. The desire
to look beautiful in every woman since the inception of time sky-rocketed the popularity of
Make-up in the 19th
Century and followed it into new millennium. With numerous additions and
improvements in the existing products and product ranges, commercial cosmetic companies have
let out all they can in the market these days owing to the fact that how important and sometimes
pressurizing it is to look their best. Make-up is THE product category that cuts through
irrespective of any profession that a woman is employed. Even if she is an environmentalist, she
will take the help of make-up products during a function to look her best without overdoing it. A
diamond’s sheen too, will seem redundant to her if her appearance is not well-complimented
with the desired Make-up.
Having established the importance of Make-Up and its attachment with women, it becomes
imperative to educate them. We’ll take you through some frequently used products and the
impurity/ toxins/ contaminations present it in it.
Sindoor: In Hindu tradition, it is used to denote the mark of a married woman is applied along
the parting line of woman’s hair (maang). It is usually blood red in colour and was earlier made
of turmeric and alum. But with the advent of synthetic dye industry, a cheaper substitute came
into market with manufactures producing it with powdered red lead and mercury sulphite. These
toxins when in contact with the skin can cause hair loss, oedema (puffiness of skin) and if
inhaled, absorbed or eaten can be detrimental for your brain, lungs and kidneys.
Mascara: One of the favourite make-up product used by woman to make the eyelashes appear
attractive. But whenever there is a huge demand for a product there is bound to be knock-offs or
counterfeit versions of it in the market. The common adulterants present in it are: Coal tar dyes,
Parabens (disrupts estrogen in the body), Aluminium Powder (a neurotoxin), Propylene Glycol (
known to cause skin irritation), Vitamin A acetate (causes cellular level damage).
Eyeliner: is used to define the eyes and applied around the contours of eyes whose usage has
been dated back to 10000 B.C. Unfortunately with changing times, the ingredients used have
seen a transition from natural, herbal to synthetic harmful toxins. Eyeliners have heavy toxic
metals in its composition which can cause cancer.
Foundations: It is applied to the skin to create an uniformity in complexion, masking the flaws
and change the natural skintone as well. Hence they are applied over the face and neck, covering
a large portion. The significant toxins present in it are propylene glycol, methylparaben, and
propylparaben all which are endrocrine disruptors, neurotoxins—which can turn turn healthy
cells into cancerous cells.
Lipstick: Is applied onto the lips to make them look attractive and glamorous. As it is a widely
popular products, thus adulterants are inevitable to cut costs and generate profits. Common
toxins present in it are cadmium, lead, chromium, manganese and lead—all of which are
carcinogens, meaning they are known to cause cancers.
There are other cosmetics in the market which are compromised with toxins to help facilitate
their sale better and nothing else. Your health is not the primary concern for these commercial
companies but is a cause of concern for us. Make the right pick from the basket of Organic
Make-up products which are featured on our website and HELP yourself to the goodness,
freshness and the natural sheen they impart you with.
