Star Block Appliqués
The Star Blocks have 3 easy steps:
1. Cut out the star base with the cutting needles, OR mark the stars with a jeans needle and cut out with an Olfa Precision Art knife
2. Create the Appliqués
3. Create the Old Glory Star Blocks
The products listed have been tested, and we know they work beautifully. Should you choose to use a different product that has similar
qualities, please test to ensure good results!
Supplies:
Sulky brand—Fuse n’ Stitch™
This is a heavy weight permanent stabilizer we will use for the star appliqué base. It will stand up to all the stitching on the appliqué.
Sulky brand—Sticky Fabri-Solvy™
This is a Self Adhesive Fabric Like Water Soluble Stabilizer—It‘s fabulous!!
Light Weight Tear Away Stabilizer
White Polyester embroidery thread
White embroidery bobbin thread
Temporary Spray Adhesive
Fabric and Battilizer™ listed on Page 3.
To prepare the Fuse n’ Stitch™ for the star base.
Cut the required number of pieces of Sulky Fuse n‘ Stitch™ according to the chart on the next page.
Fuse 2 pieces of Sulky Fuse N‘ Stitch shiny sides together. Use a press cloth to protect your iron. The number of pieces to prepare are on
the chart on the next page.
Check to be sure they lay flat inside your hoop, trim if necessary. You may need to nip the corners off to get the Sulky Fuse n‘ Stitch to
lay inside the hoop.
General Cutting Needle information
Each brand of machines listed below has their own cutting needles. They are known as Cutwork Tools, Cutwork Needles or Venere Needles.
Some companies are color coded, some are numbered. The chart below shows circles with a lines thru them. This line represents the angle of the cutting knife. Also listed is each companies color
coding or numbering system.
Please refer to your color coding or numbering system when choosing the correct cutting needle.
Also note: For these cutting needles to work properly, the upper thread sensors MAY need to be disabled before sewing to keep the machine
from stopping because there is no thread in it. Please follow your manufactures instructions for doing so, if required.

Star Block Appliqués
The chart below will show you which embroidery files to use based on the hoop size you will be using, the number
of layers of Sulky Fuse n‘ Stitch™ to place in the hoop and how many times to stitch out the stars to yield the
correct number for your Old Glory. If we call for 6 layers of Sulky Fuse n‘ Stitch™ you will put three sets of pre-
fused layers (from previous page) in the hoop. Step One you will either use cutting needles (See Step 1—Needle
Cut or NC) or a jeans needle to mark or perforate the star outline (See Step 1—Needle Mark or NM).
Key to file naming system:
NC = Needle Cut
NM = Needle Mark
8 or 5 = 8 inch or 5 inch block

Old Glory Star Blocks— Stitching them together!
We will use the Invisible Sashing method to join these blocks. After the blocks are joined in horizontal rows, the
vertical sashing will be placed on the back.
After the horizontal row is sashed, the Star appliqués will be machine stitched in place. Use the same white
embroidery and bobbin thread used in the embroidered step.
After each row is completed, join it to the next row, and sash.

Lil Glory Joining Instructions
Sew the three blocks together using a 1/4‖ seam.
From backing fabric cut two 1 1/2‖ x 8‖ sashing
strips. Use the invisible sashing technique to
apply the sashing. See slideshow for step by
step photos.
Prepare the Border
Take the 1/2 yard piece of Border fabric and fold
in half lengthwise (the opposite way it comes off
the bolt), so it measures 9‖ x 42/44‖. Cut off
12/14‖ so it measures 9‖ x 30‖ when folded (18‖
x 30‖ unfolded). Place 9‖ x 30‖ piece of
Battilizer™ inside layers to make quilt
sandwich. Quilt as desired. From the quilt
sandwich cut:
Three 2 1/2‖ x 30‖ strips
Cut one 2 1/2‖ strip into two 2 1/2‖ x
_____*‖ pieces.
Prepare the Sashing
From Fabric B (White) cut four 1‖ x wof. From
those strips cut:
Four 1‖ x ________*‖ (width of block)
Four 1‖ x ________*‖ (length of 3 blocks)
From Border fabric cut eight 1‖ x 2 1/2‖ pieces
and sew to both ends of the four longer 1‖ Fabric
B strips.
Using our Sashing and Joining technique, join
the top and bottom borders first, then join the
side borders. See Page 35-37 of slideshow for
step by step photos. Apply binding and sleeve if
desired and display proudly.

A smaller gold star was placed over the blue star, leaving a
blue border to represent a serviceman killed in action. A
smaller silver star was sewn in place to represent someone
injured. We have provided embroidery files in the Blue
Star Service Banner folder to make these stars. You will
choose either the needle cut or needle mark method and
then embroider the star in silver or gold. Follow the
instructions on pages 12-14 and then sew the star over the
blue star using your sewing machine and a straight stitch.

Tips for “Embroidered” Hand Quilting
The red stripes in Lil‘ Glory and Old Glory can
be stitched with red polyester embroidery thread
in the needle and the bobbin and it will look
fabulous...BUT
if you really want it to look tremendously
fabulous, then with a little fussing you can get
your embroidery machine to embroider hand
quilting stitches.
We caution you, patience and testing is
required. This is a delicate balance between
monofilament thread in the needle and
embroidery thread in the bobbin. You will use
(if available) a special quilting bobbin case.
The bobbin thread will be pulled to the top
every other stitch to make it look hand quilted.
Included with the design is a ‗test hand quilting
block‘. You will use this file to test the
stitching on your machine, with your thread and
your bobbin case. Once you get the proper
tension setting with your equipment, you are
ready to make the block. If you are
experiencing difficulty, don‘t be discouraged,
simply stitch the quilting stitches using your
normal bobbin case and thread. It will still be
beautiful, and you won‘t be pulling your hair
out. Remember testing is the key!
Note: This is not really hand quilting, it is a
replica of hand quilting. It will not be perfect,
but will give the look. If you can live with
pretty darn good, then go for it.
Here‘s How:
Replace your regular bobbin holder with
the special quilting bobbin holder.
Place embroidery thread in the bobbin.
Use the same thread you will use in your
quilt to test.
Place a very good quality monofilament
thread in the needle.
Hoop a quilt sandwich. Turn off thread cut
feature on your machine.
Pull bobbin thread to top of block and hold
on to both threads as you begin stitching
the test file. Stitch the basting stitch to
hold layers together. Begin stitching the
quilting stitches. If it is not pulling the
bobbin thread to the top to make pretty
hand look stitches, slowly increase your
top tension. Increase about .5 at a time to
see what looks best.
TIP: Monofilament thread can be a
problem! Slow the machine down to it‘s
slowest speed. If the thread gives you fits,
then hand feed the thread. That is, hold the
spool in your hand and make sure it doesn‘t
get wound around something.
You may find it necessary to test more than
once to get the results you are happy with.
Record your setting on the instruction sheet
on page 6, step 11.
