Obey(Shepard Fairey)

Shepard FaireyShepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY GIANT, the graphics that have changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. What started with an absurd sticker he created in 1989 while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign, as well as an acclaimed body of fine art.

“Yeah, well, I hate to say this, and some people might get very angry, but the American public is generally pretty superficial, so an image like that just allows them to project whatever limited idea they have onto it. Obviously, not everyone is like that—I actually think there were a lot of people who were bummed by the image because they felt it was shallow propaganda.”

vs. (Shepard Fairey)

On February 4, 2009, the Associated Press announced that it determined "that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission."

In January 2009 photographer and blogger Tom Gralish discovered that the poster was based on an Associated Press photograph by freelance photographer Mannie Garcia.

vs.

On October 16, 2009, Fairey admitted that he had based the poster on the AP photograph and had fabricated and destroyed evidence on an old hard drive to hide the fact that he stole the image.

vs. (Shepard Fairey)

“I said, ok, I’ll pay the licensing fee it. And [the AP] said, no, we want to claim damages. I said damages? Because of my poster the Mannie Garcia picture is now worth more than it ever would have been.”

-Shepard Fairey

vs.The AP and Shepard Fairey settled out of court in January 2011. In a press release, the AP announced that the AP and Fairey "agreed to work together going forward with the Hope image and share the rights to make the posters and merchandise bearing the Hope image and to collaborate on a series of images that Fairey will create based on AP photographs. The parties have agreed to additional financial terms that will remain confidential."

Selling OBEY…Selling out?

“When we first got there, a man walking through the park area was yelling about how graffiti needs to be recognized as a legitimate art form. "I don't know what he's trying to say," said one of Fairey's assistants, "this isn't even graffiti.”

“People like to talk shit, but it's usually to justify their own apathy.”

OBEY is a classic example of ”culture jamming,” a tactic used by anti-consumerist social movements to

disrupt or subvert mainstream media and pop culture. Culture jammers perform acts like….

The ultimate goal of culture jamming is to challenge the idea of “what’s cool” and make a statement

about consumption.

“Songs in English”APPARENTLY…Saddam Hussein had Iraqi musicians create 110 songs about him while he was ruling of Iraq….Ron English thinks that there should be at least one American with more songs written about them….so far he’s got more than 40!

Do you think that graffiti & street art

have created a “new equilibrium” between

artists and communities?

How have you seen this happen?

If you haven’t seen this happen, what

circumstances would you need to see before this

“new equilibrium” is created?
