Shiftisanapparatusthatcelebratestransformation.Thisprojectmaterializesanddramatizestheephemeralqualityoflight.Byharnessingthisperformativephenomenon,lightbeginstoactasacatalystforthetransformationofthedailyandseasonaluseofthecommunitycenter.Thephysicaledgesofthebuilding,theroofline,thegroundandtheprojectedpatternsoflightcreateachangingrelationshipbetweenthecommunityanditsusers.

Nietherobjectnorlandscape,thebuildingemergesasanaggregationofinteriorandexteriorroomsunifiedbyaveiloflight.Lighttranscendsthephysicalthresholdofthebuildinganditsprograms,selectivelyblurringinteriorandexteriorandparkspacestogether.(courtyardrender)Becauseofthisfieldlikecondition,thebuildingisencodedwithinherintmutativecapabilitytomergespacestogetherortoactasdistinctentitiesinresponsetolightconditionsorcommunitydesires.

Situatedbetweentheflowoftheschulkill,thesweepofthephiladelphiacargorail,anddirectlyinthemidstofarunning,bikingandwalkingtrail,thisbuildingisallaboutnegotiatingthesecurrents.BIkersspeedupandoverthetop,runnersdivertaroundtheside,bythewatersedgeandwalkersfilterthroughthestructure. Aspeoplepercolatethroughthebuilding,theycaneitherbreezethroughthepublicspacesorlingerinthesemi-poolingspaces.Theexteriorisalwaysactiveandtheinteriorcanbeclosedoffatnight.

Thecenterwillreinvigoratethesitebyregulatingwatercirculationandmaintiainingadiversearrayofhabitatswiththegoalofnurturingandreintroducingendemicavianandamphibiousspecies.The center will also provide direct contact with the environment for three types of people, re-searchersandconservationistsdoingresearch,corporatepollutorstryingtoatoneforsinsagainsttheenvironmentandthepubliccommunitytryingtolearnmoreabouttheenvironmentandmain-tainadailyconnectionwithnature.

WildRicewasabundant intheGreatLakesregionfor 1000sofyearsbeforeEuropeansettlersarrivedandwascentraltothewayoflifeoftheOjibwespeakingpeople.asbothafoodstapleandasacredgift.Changesthroughtoutthelastcenturysuchastheriseofcommercialandrecreationalboat trafficand thedredginganddamingofwaterways inorder toaccomidate this traffichavedecimatedthenativericestands.

Wildrice,Zizaniaaquaticaas it iscalledbybiologistsormanoominas it iscalled inOjibweisatypeofannualaquaticgrasswhichgrowsintheheadwaterofslowflowingstreamsandriversorinshallowpostglaciallakes.ItisnativetothenorthEasternUnitedstatesandSouthEasternCanada,wherethelandscapehasbeendefinedbytheLaurentideglaciationandthecoldwintersprovidethenecessarygerminationconditionsformanoominseeds.

TheSerpentMoundsatRicelakewerebuiltaround350-300CE.Littleisknownaboutthemiddlewoodlandperiodoutsidewhathasbeendiscoveredthroughburialmoundssuchasthis.Asaresulttheserpentmoundsareacriticallyimportantsiteforunderstandingthehumanhistoryoftheregion.

HistoricallyGranaryshavebeenbothsocialmeetinggroundsand economic tools. The central location of the serpentmoundssitewithinricelakemakeitanideallocationtounitethemanydispersedpocketsoflandwithricegrowingpotentialintoonesocialandeconomicentity.

TheHiawathaarethelivingstewardsoftheSerpentMoundssite.Theyarenotdirectdecendantsofthemoundbuilders,buttheyshareasimilarlifeoutlookandculturalheritage.Oneofthemainlinksbeingthewayinwhichbothcultureswereoncedirectlytiedtotherythmsofthe land. TheHiawathaareno longerable tokeepthesiteoperationalandneedafinanciallyviablesolutiontoreopenthesitetothepublic.

TheSerpentmoundsite,isabelovedandbeautifulelementofthePetterbouroughcommunity.Findingawaytoreopenthesitewhilestillpreservingthesacredheritageofthepenninsulaisinthebestinterestofeveryoneinvolved.

Ourprojectisintendedtopermitandencouraceconnectionsthroughthesynchronous,rhythmicmovementoftwopeople.Theprimaryconnectionlogicofoursurfaceutilizestheintrinsictrigonalgeometryofourbasemoduletoformasheet.Thesecondarystructureofthesheetwasdefinedbytheconceptofdance.Wedeterminedtwomethodsinwhichasheetmightencouragedance:toundulateandtodecay.Undulationswouldpushandpullthebodyintonewcontortionsbasedonthecurvesofthestructure,whileapatternofdecaywouldallowthepenetrationofthebodyintotheholesofthestructure.Wethereforeappliedtwofields,oneforundulationandonefordecaytotehregularpatternoftheprimarysheet.Thetertiatystructureofoursurfacewasdefinedbytheexaggerationoftheshapesalreadybeginningtoforminthebodyofthesheet.

Webeganthisprojectasawayofbringingthearchitecturalconversationtothepublic.WewantedtounderstandwhatitisthatpeopleofTorontoconsidericonicwithintheirownneighborhoods.Throughphotocompetitionsandneighborhoodbrainstormingsessions,wecollectedinputfromvariusresidents.WethentranslatedsomeoftheseimagesintoiconswhichcouldbeprintedontobagsandT-shirts.
