New oxide structure types were created by using lone pair cations as "chemical scissors" to cut perovskite blocks in novel ways. The compounds show magnetic frustration.

A

Lone pair cations like Bi3+ or Pb2+ are comfortable in an asymmetric coordination environment...

...and we use this to create interfaces to get new types of structures.

One type is the focus of this presentation:

Shift one part of the structure relative to the

other.

This is called a shear plane.

This gives us perovskite based crystallographic shear plane structures.

Shear plane structures were known in other compounds , but were believed to be impossible in perovskites.

We can vary orientation...

...by playing with the ratio lone pair to non lone pair cations

We can vary the distance between the interfaces...
