What has been learnt so far in the course of revising national biodiversity strategies and actions plans (NBSAPs)? On 12 November 2013, representatives from Botwana presented their key lessons at a side event to the Convention on Biological Diversity global workshop in Nairobi. Dineo Gaborekwe from Botswana stressed the importance of: * Wide consultation and dialogue with principal stakeholders * Taking a multi-sectoral approach, and * Using a range of methods such as environmental impact assessment to gather evidence and build a strong case for mainstreaming. – Various methods, at varying intervals • EIA process

• Environmental Education

Lessons learnt mainstreaming

– Consult out of the norm stakeholders i.e.

beyond env. Ministries or natural resources

dept.

• Look into livelihood options as key users of

biodiversity (arable agriculture, fishing etc)

• Promote feasible, acceptable and sustainable

alternatives to livelihoods (based on the users

guide, supported by traditional or local

knowledge)

• Tap into abundant materials and resources (solar)

• Facilitate for an enabling policy environment for

implementation
