I have an on-again, off-againrelationship with "passion." First ofall, I think it is a tremendouslyoverused term in our current culturaldialogue. It has becomesynonymous with a panacea -- thereis a sense that if you find your"passion" that everything will beperfect - you'll be ecstaticallyhappy, make millions doing it, stopglobal warming and have moretime with your family. And maybeyou will (or at least come close),because I have seen people do that.
But I also think that there are otherfactors at play - for example, youcan have multiple passions. You canhave many interests. You may wantyour passion to be your job, or youmay want to keep them separate. And you may have a job that is notthe epitome of your passion, butallows you to express it in a waythat brings real meaning andenjoyment to what you do. Forexample, your passion might be
"education" but you can "educate"in so many ways, forums, to somany different audiences, ondifferent topics. Or your passioncould be "clean food" - do youexpress it by how you feed yourfamily, do you become an educatoror spokesperson for the movement,do you create a cookbook, or doyou become the event manager foran expert in the field so they canspread the word more effectively?
Having worked with many peopleon their career vision, direction, planning and management, I dobelieve that passion plays animportant part in developing anoutstanding career. But there arealso a variety of other inputs as well- ability to articulate ideas in a waythat inspires, innate talents andstrengths, experience, career andlife vision, and timing, amongothers. And I do have a concernthat when someone says "you needto find your passion" it presumes
that you have only one, and if youdon't find out what it is, you'vefailed. I believe instead that like inromance, each person has a fewtrue loves in the world (or passions)and the one that you pursuedepends on a variety ofcircumstances and life events.
I recently watched a TED Talk, where a professor of economicsmakes a passionate case forpassion in your career. In additionto being amusing, he also makes adifferentiation between "passion"and "interests" and explains why tohave a truly great career passionneeds to play a part.
So despite how overused and tiredthe term may have become in ourcurrent vernacular, and some of thechallenges with "finding yourpassion," what part does passionplay in a career? Here are mythoughts:
• Provides a "why" to the "what"we do for a living.
• Acts as a driving force fromwithin us to motivate us to strive forexcellence.
• Links an intrinsic and authenticpart of us to our work.
• Allows us to give more ofourselves to our careers withoutdraining us.
• Creates meaning and purpose toour actions.
• Encourages us to think biggerand bolder about what we couldbe.
What do you think?

through quarterly unemploymentinsurance tax filings were up6,800,” said Glenn Mills, chiefeconomist of the Center forWorkforce Research andInformation (CWRI) of the MaineDepartment of Labor.
“There appears to be an upwardtrend in job growth, subject tosome revision,” he added.
The growth has occurred inprivate sector. The leisure andhospitality, healthcare, education, and professional and businessservices are experiencing the mostgrowth and are at or near all-timehighs. The growth in the leisureand hospitality industry partiallyreflects the opening of one casinoand the expansion of another. These figures are adjusted forseasonal fluctuations.
Construction jobs are upmoderately from low levels.Manufacturing, retail, and financejobs have stabilized. The numberof state and local government jobshas declined, and the number offederal government jobs stayedrelatively the same.
The data set does not indicate thatwage increases havecorresponded with the increase injobs.
Commissioner of Labor JeannePaquette commented, “The LePageadministration has been workinghard to cut red tape and supportprivate sector job creation. Seeingthis growth gives hope to peopleon unemployment that their jobsearch efforts will pay off.”
Mills demonstrated how thedecline in the nationalunemployment rate is based uponlower labor force participation, atrend which has been much lesspronounced in Maine, which ledto a near convergence ofunemployment rates. BecauseMaine people continue to look forwork and are therefore stillcounted amongst the unemployed, the state’s unemployment rate hasnot declined as has that of thenation.
In addition, Mills’s presentationincluded analysis of the recentrevisions of U.S. Census Bureaustatistics related to medianincome. That analysis, as well asall of the slides from Mills’spresentation, are available on the

I heard from one of my clients whowas offered a new job. When shegot the offer, the hiring managertold her that when they saw herresume, they just *had* to find outwho the person was behind thisunusually crafted document!Interestingly, she had gotten lesspositive feedback from some otherpeople. Yet she stuck with herslightly unconventional resume andit led her to a great job.
A Sea of OpinionsPerhaps what drives job seekerscrazy more than anything else isthat if they ask seven people toreview their resume, they will getseven different opinions about whatis working and not working aboutthe document. This state of affairs ischallenging for me as a resumewriter too: no matter how great Ithink a resume is, there will alwaysbe someone who disagrees with atleast something about it.
In an attempt to set the recordstraight, and to debunk the rumorsand folklore that abound inconversation about resume writing,Career Directors Internationalconducted a survey of recruiters, human resource professionals andhiring authorities: Global HiringTrends 2012
I encourage you to read the entirereport if you can (see the link at theend of this article). It is a quick read, full of illustrative graphs and charts. To give you an idea of what's inthere, I am highlighting some of themost salient results here.
The Truth about Page Limits!A question that comes up extremelyfrequently with job seekers iswhether their resume can be morethan one page - or more than twopages. During one of my "Top 10Ways to Make Resume WritingFUN" webinars, someone asked
whether his resume could beautomatically rejected by acompany simply for breaking the 2-page barrier. I am happy to reportthat these fears are for the most partunfounded.
Page Preferences for ExecutiveResumesIn the survey, 37% of respondentsstated that "length is not an issue aslong as the resume provides theright data to make decisions"—and8% actually preferred a 3-pageresume, vs. 6% who preferred a1-pager! (Only 34% preferred a2-page resume.) Perhaps mostimportant, 58% of respondentsstated that they would NOTpenalize an executive candidate forhaving a resume that did not meettheir preferences (only 5% statedthey would do so).
Here's a surprise to me: Severalrespondents stated that 5 pageswas the maximum length they wouldread! Did you hear that, ladies andgentlemen? A 5-page resume! Ithink this reality check is a good onefor any executives attempting tosqueeze their resume onto 2 pages.Clearly it is more important toinclude essential information suchas achievements and experiencesthan to meet some mythical pagerequirement. A hard-hitting resumewith a compelling message aboutwhat the executive will do for acompany will almost always beread, regardless of length.
Page Preferences for Non-Executive ResumesWhen it comes to non-executiveresumes, there is a higherpreference for 2-page resumes, at37%, and a lower percentage ofrespondents who didn't have apreference (21%). One-pageresumes were preferred by 21% ofrespondents for non-executive
What do recruiters want to see on your resume? By Brenda Bernstein
resumes, and only 6% preferred a3-page resume. I'm putting mymoney on the 2-page resume fornon-execs!
Conclusion on the page lengthissue: It's not size that matters - it'scontent! A hefty 54% of respondentssaid the length would not reallymatter if the resume were well-written and highly focused. As onerespondent stated, "As long as theperson has a reason for severalpages and I can find value in whatis written, I don't care. However, ifthe résumé is filled with nothing butjob duties on 80 separate lines, it isa waste of space and my time."(The same could be said of a 1-page resume that doesn't deliver thegoods.)
Resume Format and DesignFormat and design questions rankhigh on jobseekers' question lists. The question that most interested mewas about graphs and charts onresumes. Surprisingly, 33% ofrespondents still have not received aresume with a chart or a graph.24% of those who had seen chartsand graphs found them helpful orvery helpful, while 22% found themdistracting. These results are ratherinconclusive but indicate to me thatif you work in a conservativeindustry it might be best to stick tothe tried and true bullet format; inmore innovative industries I thinkcharts and graphs can be a greatfresh approach. Also for someoneclimbing the ladder within the samecompany, charts and graphs mightbe very effective.
I was also intrigued by the responseto rumors that some recruiters andhiring managers never click livelinks because of the possibility ofviruses. The results of this survey tella different story. Although 17% ofrespondents never click on links,62% of reported that theysometimes or always click onhyperlinks when provided.
Regarding format, the survey foundthat Word (.doc or .docx) is thepreferred format for receivingresumes by far, although 23%preferred .pdfs.
Tooting Your HornI have begun to include testimonialson almost every resume. Should youput them on yours? Although 41%of respondents said testimonialswould not influence their decisionpositively, 29% stated they would. To me that's enough support tocontinue my practice of includingtestimonials when space allows. I'drather have someone else sing myclients' praises than have the clientstoot their own horns. You mightwant to find a quotable quote foryour own resume as well.
No RulesWhat this survey brought home forme is that there are no hard and fastrules of resume writing. However, ifyou focus on communicating yourskills and accomplishments honestlyand professionally, in a way thatmatches who you are, I figure youcan't go wrong. Sure, as my clientfound out, there are multipleopinions out there and there is noway you will please everyone. Butin the end, you only need to impressone person: the one who hires you.
