OCTOBER 2013 NEWSLETTER
It’s amazing!!!! what you have accomplished in the last 100 days! On October
2nd it will be 100 days since I came on board as your pastor and as I reflect
back I am just astounded at the amount of progress we have made. So many
of you have graciously invited us into your homes and out for dinners, making
us feel welcome in Mount Pleasant. Our “Meet the Pastor” gatherings continue
throughout October and I hope that everyone has an opportunity to get togeth-
er with us. They are great fun and a good way to get to know one another.
Our progress in redecorating Fellowship Hall is going well. We plan to be up and running with our 11:00 Contemporary Service down there starting this month. The many hands that have helped paint and outfit the space with the technology and stage are much appreciated! We have followed God’s leading in this effort to make a worship space that is fresh and inviting, bringing us closer together in a coffee-house like atmosphere. We pray that hearts will come closer to God as a result of this effort. We hope everyone will come on October 13th for the 10:00 worship that will begin upstairs and then travel down for a blessing of the new space and a brunch celebrating the Consecra-tion of our gifts dedicated to God that day.
Wonderful energy is being generated by the folks coming together to reach our Young Adults in the last 100 days. We have had gatherings over meals, taken surveys, started a small group class, done on-campus outreach, and given special gifts to those ages 18-35ish. The response has been positive and con-tinues to grow. The fact that we are making the effort to reach a generation largely missing from many churches is huge, and they are beginning to re-spond.
Everyone needs to know Jesus cares! Reaching people of all ages with the love of Christ is what our work is all about. Intentionally planning for growth and outreach is the strategy. Doing with excellence is the design, because we be-lieve that God only deserves the best!
Your prayer support is needed. Everyone can pray—all it takes is time and in-tention. Please pray for the growth of our church; not so that new people will pay our bills or do our work for us, but so that more and more people come to know Jesus and dedicate their lives to building God’s kingdom with us. Making new disciples is the job of our next 100 days. How many new members can we welcome? We will see! It’s the challenge!

A Stewardship Message
We will soon be looking at a new year. As always, we approach it with great hope
and expectation. Our church can, and does play a vital role within the life of this
community, and to some extent the world. You have been noticing some changes
within our church. These exciting new initiatives are being taken in an effort to be
adaptive to demographics occurring around us. Thus it is extremely important for
us to maintain and enhance all the wonderful ministry programs of our church.
You will be receiving your pledge packets fairly soon. This year’s theme is “All You
Can…” taken straight out of John Wesley’s sermon on the use of money. Over the
course of three weeks, beginning September 28th, we will talk about being good
stewards for God by gaining all we can, saving all we can and giving all we can.
We will celebrate Consecration Sunday on October 13th with a combined worship
service at 10 a.m. followed by a brunch in the newly decorated Fellowship Hall
which will be blessed as well that day.
Please begin prayerfully considering how you will contribute to the ministries of First
United Methodist Church during the coming year through your prayers, presence,
gifts, service and witness.
Concert on Sunday, October 13
Please join your church family as we host the Young At Heart Singers for a free con-cert at 6 p.m. This Lansing-based group of gifted musicians are making FUMC the last stop on their annual fall tour. Come be en-tertained and inspired by some old favorites. A dessert reception will follow with a chance to meet and greet our guests. A couple of elder Farnums are among the performers.
Young Adult Gathering
Young Adults (18-34ish) are invited for dinner and a program (to be determined) on
Thursday, October 24 beginning at 6:30 in the Parlor. Child care will be provided by
reservation. Chef David will once again prepare an entree on the grill, so you don't
want to miss out. RSVP to the office or any of the following: David Koch, George
Aultman, Margie Williams, John Skinner, or Kendall Farnum. Please let us know if
you need a ride.
Stephen Ministry Training Class Offered In January
Sign up is now available for a Stephen Ministry training class which will begin in January. Participants in the class will complete 50 hours of training in Christian caregiving. Topics include listening, feelings, assertiveness, confidentiality and ministering to people in specific situations such as divorce, terminal illness, grief, and childbirth. At the end of training, Stephen Ministers are commissioned by the congregation. Stephen leaders link Stephen Ministers with a care receiver—a per-son in need of one-to-one Christian care.
The training is beneficial even if you do not have a care receiver. Most that have completed the training indicate that it is very helpful with dealing with family, neigh-bors, and work relationships. Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry. What a care receiver tells a Stephen Minister remains confidential. You do not have to be a member of this Church to receive the training. More than 11,000 congregations are enrolled in Stephen Ministry, representing 160 different denominations, coming from all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces, and 24 other countries. Please prayerfully consider this important ministry of our Church. A sign up sheet will be available at the Welcome Center or contact any Stephen Minister. You may also request a Stephen Minister by contacting Pastor Diane or Joan Gornicki, First Church Ste-phen Leader.

“Our God has done it
again!!...As most of you
still remember that the
NLC under the YOUTH
EMPOWERMENT & DISCIPLESHIP
MINISTRY holds the Annual National
Youth Camp every August. We had it
again and God did it in style.”
“Many lives were transformed forever
and touched in supernatural ways, with
testimonies of some young people
receiving Jesus Christ in their lives,
healings, deliverances and building
stronger relationships with Christ and
with one another.”
Rev. Mulemena goes on to
relate that though these youth camps
were originally only for UMC youths,
they have been expanded to include
young people from all over Zambia. (It’s
Missionary News
kind of like our Vacation Bible Schools
inviting unchurched youths to join in. A
great idea).
He goes on to relate, “Our
special thanks to all of you our friends
and partners for your unmatchable
prayers and support to the ministry for the
young people here in Zambia.” He adds
a special note: “Over the years now God
has placed on my heart to raise
educational support to send at least one
youth to College every year. And this
year, this desire has been so deep and I
would like to take this opportunity to
share with you friends that would love to
be a part of this vision…. I am thinking if
we can make it an annual Scholarship for
the most dedicated (yet vulnerable) youth
with good grades,” that would be great.
“We realize the United Methodist Church
here in Zambia is growing, and it needs
its young people to also grow in
education, and one youth to College
each year can make a BIG difference.
If you have been waiting for an
opportunity to send someone to school
then here is your chance to do so. Our
next school year starts in January/June
and/or September 2014 for College
students.” (If you feel First Church
could or should do this, please contact
a member of the Missions’ Ministry and
provide your input.)
Please pray for Delbert and Nancy and
all the NLC staff and continue to be a
part of what God is doing to establish
His Church in Zambia.
Your scribe, Mel Remus.
Nutrition Club - A big heartfelt Thank you to those able to donate to
this outreach. We are current with our financial pledge. However,
please remember that this is a school year long commitment. Our
FUMC church family is making a real difference in the lives of these
children. Please prayerfully consider donating to this local children's
outreach. Please contact Amy at 773-6934 if you have any
questions.
Matthew 10:42 - And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one
of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he
will certainly not lose his reward.
Snacks for Pullen-Thank you for all the donated snacks.
They were shared with 4 classrooms and very much
appreciated. This is also a school year long project. If you are able,
please pick up a snack item when you are at the grocery store. The
items do not have to be individually wrapped. Pretzels, crackers, and
apples make easy snacks. Please contact Amy with any questions.

Woodland Hospice to Receive October
“Loose Change” Offerings
The Mission Team has designated Woodland
Hospice as our Loose Offering recipient for the month of
October. Here are some things to know about this wonderful
organization.
Hospice of Central Michigan began in 1984 with a
small number of people who put an announcement in the
paper. It was built by people in our community and with
volunteers 80 strong.
In 2006 the need for residential care was identified.
Morey Foundation put up a million dollars. By 2008
Woodland Hospice opened. Morey Foundation continues its
support by doubling any contribution that is given.
Health insurance usually pays for care. No one is
ever turned away for lack of money. The fee is $636.00 for 3
days or 210.00 a day for room and board.
Woodland Hospice’s strength is that it is locally
based and locally supported. It is a privilege to be invited
into a family’s life at this challenging time. It is a great gift to
the family if decisions for the celebration of life have been
made ahead and together with the family.
There are 8 patient rooms that are large enough for
family members to be together with the patient. You can do
your own cooking and sit down with family for a meal.
Monday through Friday, you can order lunch for a reasonable
fee. There is a meditation room and a great room with TV
plus comfortable chairs for relaxing. There is also a
children’s room with Wii, many games, books and movies.
There are many caring people at Woodland Hospice
to make this hard time easier.
Praise Band Worship Leader Announced
The SPRC committee is happy to announce that after
going through an official hiring process Antoinette Tucker has
accepted the position of Praise Band Worship Leader for First
United Methodist Church. Antoinette has been filling in all
summer and into the fall and we are delighted to have such a
talented musician and spiritually grounded person on staff.
Leadership of worship is a vitally important position,
whether it is the pastor or lay persons designing and leading
worship. The team aspect of having Pastor Diane working with a
creatively gifted group to put together worship experiences that
are memorable and spiritually moving is important to the life of
our church. Having a team of musicians, whether it’s our
fabulous choir or an outstanding praise band, that can enhance
our worship with great music is powerful. First United Methodist
Church is blessed to have such people on staff and in volunteer
positions. Dr. Eric Tucker, our Music Director, oversees
all aspects of our music program and is a wonderful asset to our
church. Having Antoinette on staff is a double blessing as she
serves in this new official capacity. Pastor Diane welcomes the
creation of a “terrific trio” that works very well together to make
our worship experiences awesome.
As the Contemporary Service launches this month in
our new worship space we look forward to welcoming more and
new people into worship. The church’s goal to develop
ministries with children, youth, families and young adults is well-
served as we seek to create two contrasting styles of worship;
both traditional and contemporary. We realize that these are
not generationally specific, and that there will be those for whom
a less formal, contemporary service will help them find a church
home.
