Moneyball for PA Programs Getting Better Students Using People Analytics

Seán L. Stickle Chief Communications & Diversity Officer Physician Assistant Education Association

“The old paradigm was that we didn't have enough information. Now we have a blizzard of data and it's hard to see through it.” #WPAC

Analytics could have been used to exclude me based on my Day 1 stats instead of predicting my Year 1 performance. Zeynep Tufekci Sociologist

Operational Definition

“An operational definition is a procedure agreed upon for translation of a concept into a measurement of some kind.” #Deming

“Hardness”

Hard : solid, firm, and resistant to pressure; not easily broken, bent, or pierced.

Examples

“Peak GPA”

“Grit”

The only thing that I see that is distinctively different about me is, I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, but if we get on the treadmill together, right, there’s two things: You’re getting off first, or I’m going to die. #WillSmith

“C factor”

“This ‘c factor‘ is not strongly correlated with the average or maximum individual intelligence of group members but is correlated with the average social sensitivity of group members.”

“Plus-Minus”

“Battier’s game is a weird combination of obvious weaknesses and nearly invisible strengths.

“When he is on the court, his teammates get better, often a lot better, and his opponents get worse — often a lot worse.” #NYTimes

“Situational Judgement”

You are reviewing a routine drug chart for a patient with rheumatoid arthritis during an overnight shift. You notice that your consultant has inappropriately prescribed methotrexate 7.5 mg daily instead of weekly. Rank in order the following actions in response to this situation (1 = most appropriate; 5 = least appropriate)

a. Ask the nurses if the consultant has made any other drug errors recently

b. Correct the prescription to 7.5 mg weekly c. Leave the prescription unchanged until the

consultant ward round the following morning d. Phone the consultant at home to ask about

changing the prescription e. Inform the patient of the error

When judges make repeated rulings, they show an increased tendency to rule in favor of the status quo. This tendency can be overcome by taking a break to eat a meal. “Extraneous factors in judicial decisions” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2011

“People analytics must be careful not to turn employees into data-driven automatons, but empower people to make better decisions.” #WPAC
