Historically, who has survived and/or flourished in our schools?
What is your own experience? What helped you to successfully navigate school? Which of these do you think helps all students? Which of these do you think is culturally specific?

WorkshopGoals
1. Learn something new.
2. Develop at least one (1) personal action step toward becoming more culturally competent.
3. Commit to doing something new to help create a better team (department / school).
List of Best Practices
1. Put student at the center of your work.2. The best way to know your community is to be engaged with your
community (this means making mistakes and being uncomfortable).
3. Consulting and collaborating with stakeholders to create a school climate that welcomes and appreciates the strengths and gifts of culturally diverse students.
4. There are a lot of barriers and it generally takes work to ensure wider access (outreach is ideal).
5. Follow up with students after high school.6. Counselor as model of learning (lifelong student).7. Explore own personal beliefs, attitudes and knowledge about
working with diverse student populations.8. Address the impact that poverty and social class has on student and
school academic experiences. 9. Identify the impact of family culture upon student experiences.10. Use data to close the gap among diverse student populations
(measure groups against 100%, not each other).
11. Enhance own cultural competence and facilitation of the cultural awareness, knowledge and skills of all school personnel.
12. Practice culturally sensitive advising and counseling.

Statement of Counselor Competencies
Competency #4The Ability to Recognize, Appreciate, and Serve Cultural Differences and the Special Needs of Students and Families.
School counselors should:
• Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances of students and their racial/ethnic, gender, age, physical, and learning differences.
• Possess and demonstrate the counseling and consulting skills that will facilitate informed and responsive action in response to the cultural differences and special needs of students.
• Acquaint students with the school-based and outreach services and support systems designed to address their unique educational needs.
• Seek to improve and extend services to underserved students, especially those who are underrepresented among postsecondary education constituencies.
