INTRODUCTION
2
Indonesia is the world
biggest palm oil producing
country (>8 million ha)
Province of Riau is the
largest area of plantation
Palm oil plantation has
been criticizing for not
environmentally farming
system => global warming
Highly dependent on the
chemical fertilizer that
may in long term harmful
to the environment
3
More friendly farming system to support
sustainable palm oil plantation, while
reducing the cost of production, would
be the challenge in the future !
4
INTRODUCTION OF LIVESTOCK FARMING
UNDER PALM TREES WOULD BE ONE OF
THE SOLUTIONS
5
LIVESTOCK GRAZING UNDER PALM TREES
Farmers generally use herbicide to kill or clean the grass
6
CATTLE CAN BE USED FOR
WORK/TRANSPORT
KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER ON
LIVESTOCK FARMING FOR SUSTAINABLE PALM
OIL PLANTATION WAS DONE IN ‘KUD TUNAS
MUDA’ DAYUN-SIAK-RIAU SUMATERA
8
1. Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF)
2. Feed technology based on palm
trees by products (leaf and palm
kernel cake)
3. Biogas development
4. Livestock management
INTRODUCTION OF APPLIED
TECHOLOGY : EASY - CHEAP
METHODS :
9
TRAINING – STUDY TOUR - DIRECT COACHING REGULARLY
30 farmers member of KUD ‘Tunas Muda ‘ were trained & Study tour to UGM
10
PALM’s LEAF
AS LIVESTOCK FEED
FEED TECHNOLOGY BASED ON
PALM TREES BY PRODUCTS
12
MOLASES
MULTI MICROBES
LIQUID ORGANIC FERTILIZER (LOF)
14
COLLECTION OF URINE / LIQUIID MANURE
PREPARATION AND FERMENTATION
OF LIQUID ORGANIC FERTILIZER
16
Famer produce LOF 750 – 3000 liter / month
17
18
BIOGAS DEVELOPMENT :
Energy for electricity, cooking and chopper
RESULTS & CONCLUSION :
After 2 years of training and direct coaching :
- 19 Farmers (63%) adopted the LOF technology
based on cattle manure
- Beef cattle population increased two times (from
200 to 400 head)
- Production cost (chemical fertilizer) reduce 50-
60% after replaced by LOF
- Farmers get additional income 55.000-170.000
yen/month
- Palm oil trees productivities improved

CONCLUSION Introduction of Livestock farming under
palm oil plantation offer significant benefit
either economically or environmentally
for the future sustainable farming system
including forest and agro forestry
management
However, knowledge and technology
transfer through direct and regularly
coaching to the farmers will be one of the
key success of technology adoption rate
