•Milk production, to some extent, depends on the duration of the lactation period which is the milk production after a calf is born.

•Milk production can be increased by increasing lactation period.

For cattle to be healthy, proper food should be provided. The food requirement of diary animals are divided into two:-

1. Maintenance requirement- As the name suggests, this food is given to suit the animals needs. It is to support the animal to live a healthy life.

2. Milk producing requirement: This is the food given to milch animals during their lactation period.

Animal feeds include:1. Roughage (largely fibre)2. Concentrates (contains proteins and other

nutrients)

Cattles need food containing the proper nutrients in proper amounts.

Certain feed additives containing micronutrients promote to the health and milk output of dairy animals.

•Cattle suffer from many diseases (eg. Foot and mouth disease).•These diseases may reduce milk production.•They may even cause death.•A healthy animal usually feeds regularly and has a normal posture.•There are external and internal parasites.•External parasites live on the skin and mainly cause skin diseases.•The internal parasites (eg.worms) affect the internal organs ie. Stomach, intestine.•Infectious diseases are also caused by bacterias and viruses.•Vaccinations are given to animals to prevent them from bacterial and viral diseases.
