Sen. Villar proposes 6-hr workweek for teachersSENATOR Manny Villar has

proposed to reduce the workinghours of all public school teachersto a six-hour per day or a total of a30-hour workweek to make themmore effective and productive.

“Teachers clamor for higher paybut shorter working hours. Theirwork schedule leaves them stressedout and exhausted. Reducing theirnumber of working hours will al-

low them to have moretime to innovate and en-hance classroom teach-ing and result to a moreproductive workforce,”Villar said.

Villar filed Senate BillNo. 2454 providing a 6-hour workday for pub-lic school teachers and exemptingthem from compliance with the 8-

hour workday for gov-ernment employees.

The bill repeals Sec-tions 13 and 14 of Re-public Act No. 4670or the Magna Carta ofPublic School Teach-ers. The Departmentof Education issued

Memorandum 291 s. 2008 allow-ing teachers to allot six hours for

actual class-room teach-ing a day,with the re-maining twohours to bespent inteaching-re-lated activi-ties. Thus,
