Aims of this workshop

MESP: Developing the Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical

Wellbeing of our LHS Pupils

1. To know a little more about what support is available at LHS

2. To explore what we mean by MESP and the purpose of the LHS MESP courses

3. To look at the S1 MESP course and how this links to S2

‘MESP’ at Larbert High School

• When our pupils arrive at LHS, their ‘MESP’ class may not at first stand out on their time table. But it’s important.

• Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing

• One period per week

MESP at Larbert High School

This short video, therefore, helps to showcase what we mean by MESP and how it is part of the entire school curriculum

• As you can see, our pupils are able to engage with aspects relating to their ‘MESP’ throughout the school day and across the entire curriculum

• This is due to the fact that we feel the development of their MESP is crucial in helping pupils to become successful learners, confident individual, responsible citizens and effective contributors

MESP Lesson -Topics and Themes

• Specifically designed to ensure that pupils receive the support they need.

• Allowing them to develop across a number of areas in the MESP curriculum.

• Taught mostly by Year Team.

• Provides opportunities to talk openly about key issues with someone they know and trust.

Topics and Themes

In S1, pupil have been learning about some of the following topics:

T.O.W.I.L Cool Heads Futurama Gogglebox Be Kind

Introduction to life here at LHS and incorporates many issues such as: navigating the school, relationships with peers and how to get involved in school life.

Explores stresses which can be found in the daily lives of pupils and how we can use strategies to combat these.

Allows pupils to best plan and think about their future. This group of lessons come in the lead up to the S1 Curriculum review.

Focuses upon all of the issues which young people may see on TV. Scenarios relating to emergency situations to issues relating to drugs and alcohol.

Be Kind aims to highlight the importance of being kind, respectful and civil to all of the people around you.

In S2, pupils will continue to engage in lessons related to Mental Health and Wellbeing, Positive Destinations and Choices.

MESP in Action

• The following slide shows some real examples of MESP in action within MESP classes in the past year and across the curriculum on our Twitter page.

• In all cases, pupils were given an opportunity to develop an aspect of their wellbeing; whether that was their mental, emotional, physical or social skills.
