Media GCSE Bridging Project

Dear Year 9,

Welcome to GCSE Media. We are really pleased you have chosen Media and this bridging project is designed to introduce you to some of the media texts and activites we will be doing next year. Please work through the activities and contact us if you are having any problems.

What is media?

• The means of communication that reach large numbers of people, such as television, newspapers and radio.

• Plural of medium (type of media)A means of mass communication via broadcasting, publishing, the Internet

and digitally.

Task 6:Film Marketing

Part of your GCSE will be coursework. This year our students made their own film posters and DVD covers.

• Look at different film posters and DVD covers. • Make a list of the codes and conventions (ingredients) of a DVD cover

and a film poster. Here is a start:

Task 7: How creative are you?

Choose your favourite genre of film. Is it comedy, thriller, horror, rom-com, spy, action? You are going to create the marketing material for a new film in your chosen genre with a certificate rating of 12A. You need to:

1. Bullet point the plot of your new film.2. Make notes on the main characters.3. Give it a title.4. Write the blurb for your DVD cover (150 words max).5. Create the cinema poster for your film.6. Design the DVD cover for your film (front cover, spine, back cover).

You may hand draw or use any computer programmes you have
