“Mad Missionaries”
One of the most well-known Christian conflicts is narrated by Luke in Acts 15:36-41. It was a kerfuffle between Paul and Barnabas. These two champions for Christ got cross with one another when they were preparing to embark on their second missionary journey. They were trying to decide who they were going to take along with them as members of their missionary team. "Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him" (vv. 37-38a NIV). Luke explicitly states the reason for Paul's view that they should not take Mark with them. It was because Mark "had deserted them in Pamphylia (on their first missionary journey, 13:13) and had not continued with them in the work" (v. 38b NIV). Paul didn't consider Mark reliable. Luke doesn't give the reason why Barnabas wanted to take Mark along. However, it seems reasonable to infer that since Barnabas and Mark were cousins (Col. 4:10), Barnabas was quick to give him a second chance. Paul and Barnabas could not come to a meeting of the minds relative to Mark. Rather, "they had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord" (vv. 39-40 NIV). Who was right in this disagreement, Paul or Barnabas? Luke doesn't say. They might have both been right. It’s true that Mark had proven himself unreliable. You don't want to have to lean on a person like that in crises (Prov. 25:19). However, Mark did get himself together, so that at the end of Paul's life, he considered Mark reliable (2 Tim. 4:11). The main point that we should get out of this is that even though Paul and Barnabas had a disagreement so sharp that they couldn't work together on that missionary effort, neither one of them allowed that dispute to cause them to quit the church. They rather continued their faithful missionary work. We should never take our frustrations with fellow Christians out on Christ. Jesus isn't always pleased with the behavior of Christians (cf. Rev. 2:4, 14, 20), so don't blame Jesus for it. Since the church is the body of Christ, quitting the church is tantamount to quitting Christ (Eph. 1:22-23). -Mike
