Welcome to the Festival!
As festival organizers we are always searching for new ways to satisfy your movie going experience. Our 14th Annual Cherry Hill Volvo Cars Jewish Film Festival is the most ideal way to share our excitement for Judaic themed films. The big screen experience provides a unique pleasure and opportunity to see these films together as a community. Festival selections are viewed by our diligent committee members throughout the year - at group meetings as well as on their own personal laptops. So, we can’t wait to share these stories with you.
Of course, a festival like ours can only thrive with all kinds of support and people like you. We are fortunate to live in a community that embraces the arts and enthusiastically supports Jewish culture. Special thanks to our committee, volunteers, staff and especially our naming sponsor, Cherry Hill Volvo Cars as well as our other generous supporters who enable this community to laugh, reflect, discover and learn through the lens of enriching Judaic entertainment.

It’s difficult to encapsulate the life and career of the legendary Kirk Douglas. As one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, the story of his career is also the story of America in the 20th century. From his humble, impoverished beginnings, to his crusade against McCarthy’s blacklist, to intimate footage of his nearest and dearest celebrating Kirk’s 100th birthday, this film pays loving and touching tribute to the life and career of a Jewish-American icon.

SAMMY DAVIS, JR: I’VE GOTTA BE ME7:30 PM
Documentary
Director Samuel D. Pollard
United States2017English100 Minutes
This is the first major film documentary to examine Davis’ vast talent and his journey for identity through the shifting tides of civil rights and racial progress during 20th-century America.
Sammy Davis, Jr. had the kind of career that was indisputably legendary, so vast and multi-faceted that it was dizzying in its scope and scale.
Davis strove to achieve the American Dream in a time of racial prejudice and shifting political terrain. He was the veteran of increasingly outdated show business traditions trying to stay relevant. He frequently found himself bracketed by the bigotry of white America and the distaste of black America. Davis was the most public black figure to embrace Judaism, thereby yoking his identity to another persecuted minority.

Leona is an intimate, insightful, and moving film that tells the story of a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love.
Ripe with all the drama and interpersonal conflicts of a Jane Austen novel, watching her negotiate the labyrinth of familial pressure, religious precedent, and her own burgeoning sentiment, it is both painful and beautiful. There are no easy choices to be made and the viewer travels back and forth with her as she struggles with her heart to take the best path.

Bagels meet bongos in The Mamboniks, a feature-length documentary that tells the untold story of the Jewish love affair with Latin music. Set in New York, Havana, Miami Beach and the Catskill Mountains, this uplifting film features a lovable, somewhat zany collection of dancers from the 1950s. Now retired yet still dancing in Florida, they share their passion for the mambo, the hot dance from Cuba that became a world-wide sensation.
With an infectious soundtrack including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and mambo king Pérez Prado, this film explores a mostly unexamined aspect of Jewish life and culture.

This “Post-Holocaust” documentary follows six extraordinary women, capturing what it means to move from tragedy and trauma towards life. These women all moved to Los Angeles, married, raised children and became “Americans” but never truly found a place to call home.
What makes this story so fascinating is how these women saw, interpreted and interacted with the changing face of America in the second half of the 20th century. These powerful women serve as our guides on an extraordinary journey, sometimes celebratory, sometimes heart-breaking, but always inspiring.

Take a look at Israel through the eyes of society’s best and funniest observers: stand-up comedians. For 15 years, Avi Liberman has been taking fellow American comedians of different backgrounds to Israel. As they tour and perform across the country, some are deeply affected, overcome by the spiritual significance of Biblical and historic sites, while others are wildly irreverent.
Born in Israel, but raised in Texas, Liberman’s tour features 30 renowned comedians including Gary Gulman, Craig Robinson, Ray Wood Jr. and Dan Naturman. Performing 100 shows, the tour sold over 20,000 tickets for charity.

Shoelaces tells the story of a complicated relationship between an aging father, Reuben and Gadi, his son with special-needs who Reuben abandoned while he was still a young boy. Reuben’s kidneys are failing and Gadi wants to donate one of his own kidneys to help save his father’s life.
However, the transplant committee objects to the procedure claiming that Rueben, acting as Gadi’s sole legal guardian, does not have the right to authorize such an invasive procedure. Gadi, who recently lost his mother, is afraid of losing his father as well. He feels he finally has the chance to do something meaningful; to become a man and stand on his own.
Thoughtful, poignant, and unexpectedly funny, Shoelaces explores the complex dynamics of adult parent-child relationships.

Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel is the David-and-Goliath story of Israel’s national baseball team as it competes for the first time in the World Baseball Classic. After years of crushing defeats, Israel finally ranked among the world’s best in 2017.
Its roster includes many Jewish-American major leaguers, most with a tenuous relationship to Judaism, and many never having set foot in Israel. Their odyssey takes them from the Holy Land where they are hailed as modern-day Maccabees to the tournament in South Korea where they must debunk their reputations as has-beens and wannabes. The connection to Israel that the players forge pushes them to unexpected heights as they represent the country on the world stage.

Drama/Thriller
Director Astrid Schult
Germany2017German with English subtitles74 Minutes
On a mission of vigilante justice, a young woman goes to extremes to seek reprisal against a suspected ex-Nazi. Driving on a deserted highway through the German countryside, Lena arrives at the Rossberg’s remote estate as nightfall descends. Feigning a car accident, she begs for help from the deeply apprehensive Maria, who reluctantly agrees to invite her in. But Lena’s plea is a ruse to confront the aged patriarch Anselm Rossberg, a former Auschwitz guard accused of war crimes.
Lena’s efforts to extract a confession at gunpoint result in a twisted cat-and-mouse game, as the three characters enter a standoff fraught with moral complexities and shocking revelations. Powerhouse performances and a thrilling script fuel this edge-of-the-seat drama about wartime guilt and culpability across generations.
