Business CardDescriptionA personal redesign of DeviantArt’s logo featured in original, matching business card andletterhead layout.

ObjectivesPractice repetition across multiple platformsUse of the pen tool in Illustrator
ProcessThe devilish face on the back of the business card is an icon of DeviantArt’s official mascot,Fella (who doesn’t get enough attention, in my opinion). He was drawn using the ellipse andpen tool. I also drew the ‘D’ icon in Illustrator. The main reason I chose this company was
because they had recently redesigned their own logo, and I didn’t like it very much. So Itook this assignment as an oppor tunity to design a look that I would prefer.
With these icons, I worked on this business card first. I decided to place Fella on the backby himself so he didn’t distract from the text. I drew the triangles in the corner so that
the card looked fuller, also giving the ‘D’ icon something to interact with. The whole look ismodern, clean, and young, which is the message of DeviantArt.
The audience was to young and/or spirited modern artists.

ObjectivesPractice repetition across multiple platforms
ProcessI aimed for repetition in the l etterhead. I simply reused the elements from the businesscard. The corner triangles are used again as a watermark. I purposefully gave the contactinformation low hierarchy so the website address would be stronger. I excluded my Fellaicon because it would be too distracting and is unnecessary for a letterhead.

ProcessFirst, I started by stating why I had chosen DeviantArt’s mascot, Fella, for my subject. Italked about why I wasn’t fond about DeviantArt’s new logo and why I though mine icon is
at least conceptually better. Then I went on to describe the design elements of my icon.
On the web page itself, I repeated the sharp green colors and aligned many things on theleft side of the text for easy legibility. The corner triangles create asymmetry and repetitionfrom the business card and letterhead.

Demonstrate skill in IllustratorCreate an interesting portfolio cover
ProcessMy first sketches were much more literal and complicated. I had drawn an iconof my curly hair with my old fedora. I quickly realized that not only did I not havetime to draw something so complicated in Illustrator, but it was a poor brandingconcept. A brand shouldn’t be subject to such constant change as someone’s looks.
wThis new look wasn’t easy either. I underestimated how hard it would be to draw ahand in Illustrator. The pen is what I use on my Bamboo tablet to draw. This icon isprofessional and elegant, a nice contrast to the grudgey background. This logo wasspecifically designed for this portfolio cover.

ObjectivesApply knowledge about multiple programs for one projectResearching a company, or group in this caseDesign in a brochure format
ProcessI had discovered this band about a week before being assigned this project. I was soexcited about the band that I decided to do my brochure on them, perhaps give them somepublicity.
First, I had to create a new logo in Illustrator. It was a bit difficult because the band’sofficial logo has a giraffe on it, so I couldn’t use it in my logo without it looking too similar. Iinstead drew the lead singer’s hat and goggles and a wicked smile. You’ll notice that the fold is unique. On the piece of paper that I originally sketched on, I
folded it in a way to make it easier to see the front logo. That folding is the unique foldingthat I used in the final brochure. My fellow peers loved the unique layout and how it madethe brochure a little more interactive and deep.
Next, I used Photoshop to create the textured background. It was a red leather base withrusted metal masked on top of it. I also put the robot character into frames and maskedthe white glow behind them in Photohsop. I also cut out the silhouette I used for thetextwraped image. Lastly, I added details like the orange and teal swirls in Illustrator.

ProcessI chose the quote first and got inspiration from the flower photos that I took the previousweek. I found the picture of Christ online, purposefully trying to look for a picture withouthis face. The message would be clear and more effective without his face. I masked thebackground away from the Christ image and the edges away from my flower photo. I also
chose vintage textures from online and played with the colors of the flowers to match thetextures. I used white drop shadows around the text to make it legible. I al igned the textwith Christ’s elbow and the large leaves at the bottom, respectively. The larger text at thebottom was intended for design, not legibility.

ObjectivesCreate various logos for one companyPractice in IllustratorFocus on a message
ProcessI started with thinking o f a company. The Underground is a company in my own fictionalstory. They grow unique mushrooms in caves for a majority of their profit, but also grow
poisonous mushrooms upon ‘special request’. So for this company, the logo design neededto be unsuspecting to the public yet g rungy and dark.
The first design is more professional while the other one is more accurate to what thecompany is. Most people I asked liked the first design but I prefer the second one. For the
first one, I found a san-serif font and drew the tilted mushroom. The white specks follow therule of odds. For the second one, I searched online for an earthy font and used the pen toolto draw the mushrooms. I then used the eraser tool to chip away at the lines so it wouldmatch the font.

ProcessIn one of Aesop’s less notable fables, the moral of the story was “Desperation breedscreativity.” Well, after I had rented a camera from the campus library, I desperately looked
for something outside to shoot with the few minutes of daylight left. I felt like I was chasingthe sun as I ran to get to the front of the school where the beautiful evening light was. ThenI paused in my tracks as I saw the Taylor building’s walls glow a soft pink. I knelt behind asmall tree with red berries to help pull all the red in and quickly took the shot. I later gotrid of harsh shadows, edited out some signs that were in the grass, and gave the whole
thing a pink glow.

ObjectivesFirst project in InDesignLearn the basic layout elements (rule of odds, white space, repetition)
ProcessFirst I sketched, though the original design looks a bit different from the final product.Using Adobe InDesign, I inserted the image first, then built the title and text around it. Ieliminated any curves from my design and added decorative squares for repetition. Theempty squares contrast with the dark blocks and the man’s dark suit. Lastly, I used a subtlegradient for the background and left chucks of white space to separate topics.

ObjectivesWriting the text
Using Word as a design programConvey the messageUsing a scanner to get quality images
ProcessThe challenge of this project was to use one, scanned, full-bleed image and be limited toMicrosoft Word to design. This was especially hard given that the newest version of Wordhas done away with its most useful design features. I got my image from my junk mail pileand scanned it, which went well. I wrote the text and sketched. I originally used a moreelegant script font, but people had a hard time reading it. Also, everything used to be near
the top of the page in a linear fashion. I was advised to place ‘Supporting’ to the side of mytext and move the website and orange bar down more, as you now see. The newer design ismore modern, with a soft, warm color scheme, simple yellow peddle shapes for repetition, and basic alignment.
