As I write this, my term as NAEC President winds down and we get closer to the annual convention. It seems only yesterday I walked into my first
Board of Directors meeting in Boston. It has been an incredible experience to be a part of such a great team at the NAEC.
I would like to extend my gratitude for NAEC’s Executive Director, Teresa Witham, for working so hard towards the Board of Director’s goals in the last few years. It is the behind the scenes work from Teresa and the NAEC staff that is the life blood of the organization that keeps us
running day to day so we can enjoy all of the benefits of the association.
The past year has been full of challenges and opportunities as an organization. We survived a hurricane, we completed a new executive director search, we are preparing to launch new programs, we mapped out a new 3 to 5 year strategic plan and we still continued to provide all of the existing programs, certifications and benefits that has made NAEC great.
The future of NAEC will be in good hands as Teresa hands off the Executive Director role next year to Alesa McArthur. What has impressed me is Alesa’s ideas towards NAEC’s future and her past association experience. This is a very exciting time for NAEC.
The volume of volunteer activity for NAEC is incredible. I would like to personally thank each and every one that participates on committees and volunteers their time. If you have not participated, get involved, our association can benefit from you voice and your passion.
It has been a humbling experience to sit beside industry giants during my term on the BOD and as President. Thank you for this once in a life time opportunity. I would like to thank my BOD classmates for sharing their journey with me. Two board members that have gone above and beyond have been LJ Blaiotta and Joe McNally, if you see them, tell them thank you for stepping up when needed and doing an incredible job.
NAEC’s BOD leadership is in good hands with the passing of the presidential baton to Gary Schuette. Gary and I have worked on having a seamless transition and he has been nothing but incredible during his term as Vice President.
Thank you for all the support and friendship I received during my tenure on the Board of Directors. I have met more people, strengthened more friendships and had more incredible experiences than I would have dreamed.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Atlantic City!
With extreme gratitude,
Craig Zomchek

NAEC provides an abundance of social networking opportunities over the course of the four-day convention. Monday starts off with the Welcome Reception followed by a party hosted by our industry charity, the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation. It is sure to be a fantastic evening, so be sure to attend both events!
Bruno Independent Living Aids, located in Oconomowoc, WI, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of accessibility products, including stairlifts and vertical platform lifts.
Founded in 1984 by Michael Bruno, the company initially manufactured hoists to lift mobility equipment such as scooters and wheelchairs into cars, trucks and vans. By applying technology used in scooter manufacturing, Bruno entered the stairlift market in 1992 and became the first manufacturer in North America to offer a battery-powered straight stairlift.
Over the last three decades, Bruno has expanded its accessibility offerings to include two straight rail stairlifts, a custom-curve rail stairlift and residential and commercial vertical platform lifts. Bruno sells these products through a global network of accessibility dealers and is the North American leader for these products in the residential market.
There are many social events and activities that are sure to make your Convention experience memorable.
For those who like a little competion, register for the Official Golf Tournament taking place at the prestigious Seaview Golf Club on Monday. If it’s a good run you enjoy, join the Fun Run ‘18 on Tuesday at the Sheraton Atlantic City. Afterwards, take a sweet, relaxing Wine and Chocalates cruise and tour and relish in the sights of the city while enjoying a wine and chocolate tasting, too.
On Wednesday evening, we’ll stroll down memory lane to the sights and sounds of the fabulous 50’s at the Throwback Beach Party and Dinner. So put on your cool threads and come hang out!
What’s an NAEC Convention & Expo without ending it with some NAEC FUN? A favorite of our attendees, the Dregs Party will conclude our week of Education and business networking. Head with us to Wild Wild West at Bally’s Casino, a short walk from the hotels, and let’s get this party started! With good food, good friends- old and new, this will be a party to remember! Since the launch of their first stairlift, Bruno credits its NAEC membership and regular participation in exhibiting at the annual organization’s conference as a key factor in their success.
“The NAEC conference is our best opportunity to meet with the premier dealers and installers in the accessibility industry,” says Bill Page, Bruno’s Director of Product Development. “Exhibiting at the convention is ideal for us to roll out new products, solicit input on new and existing programs and forge new relationships.”
Bruno is a proponent of CAT certification for technicians to improve the skills and abilities of installers in the field.

“We require and certify our dealers via our own technical training, but CAT Certification provides a more comprehensive understanding of the products available and the best practices needed for accessibility technicians,” said Bruno’s Dealer Training Manager Luke Bebeau. Bruno’s training qualifies for continuing education credits under NAEC’s CAT Certification Program.

Another key to Bruno’s success is implementation of a lean production system approximately ten years ago. “We want a clear understanding of our customer needs and ability to eliminate waste in our processes, and lean manufacturing is the tool that we use to fundamentally improve our business. Since the launch of lean initiatives, we significantly improved our delivered quality, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction -- all while reducing inventory and containing costs,” explained Pat Foy, Bruno’s Director of Customer Experience.
Bruno recently introduced a line of vertical platform lifts designed for
commercial applications
Moving forward, Bruno continues to see opportunities for growth in North America and around the world. In addition to recently expanding Bruno’s accessibility product line to include commercial vertical platform lifts, Bruno has established a UK subsidiary grow sales in that market.
“Our commitment to dealers, and our channel remains strong, as we believe it provides the best path for customers to receive the right product for their needs. Our relationship with NAEC members will continue to be one of our most important to sustain,” said Page.

RESIDENTIAL ELEVATORSYou wouldn’t think a family owned company based in the tree-lined hills of North Florida could become the residential elevator vendor of choice for a half-billion-dollar Los Angeles showcase or the home of an American sports star. But thanks to hustle, innovation, and visionary leadership, Residential Elevators has done just that – and more.
What in the mid-1990s was a small home elevator company now has more than 250 employees under the leadership of President Erin Ennis. The company operates manufacturing plants in Florida and Georgia and has a fleet of 18-wheel trucks to handle shipping and installation, allowing it to effectively control its supply chain and custom build elevators to suit even the most unconventional design request.

What really sets Residential Elevators apart from the competition is its position as the only company the homeowner will need to deal with through for the life of the product. The company’s representatives are there every step of the way, from manufacturing to shipping, installation, and service – all done with Residential Elevators employees, not third-party contractors.
With so many Baby Boomers reaching and passing retirement age, forward-thinking architects and builders are creating “home-elevator-ready” multi-story home communities. And they’re doing it with fewer space constraints and costs than most would think – with the company’s home elevators, the required footprint is often no larger than a well-placed closet.
And oh, what Residential Elevators can do with that “closet” space! In Bel Air, California, the company has designed three hydraulic units for what is projected to be the most expensive residential home for sale in the U.S., a staggering $500 million. In North Carolina, the company delivered a spectacular glass and stainless steel elevator that gives
famed NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin a 360° view of his unique surroundings. And in Tampa, Florida, the company crafted a one-of-a-kind home elevator resembling a fish tank, revealing a design created by a member of the homeowner’s family.
Residential Elevators Manufacturing Employee
While the company is capable of handling such high-end jobs, it truly serves a growing clientele of customers, from the average homeowner to some of the most prestigious builders and developers in the United States.
Residential Elevators has become an industry leader by holding to the vision established in its earliest days. Former banking executive Bobby Boeneke knew how to spot a need. In the mid-1990s, he expanded the footprint of Residential Elevators, which at the time was a small home elevator company. Company leadership envisioned a turn-key operation, working with customers from start to finish on an outstanding product. The company dedicated itself to hiring the best craftsmen and technicians to produce and install elevators that would become the standard in the industry.
Over the years, Residential Elevators has become a true success story, thanks to a winning concept fueled by innovation, leadership, and a commitment to quality and customer service.

• Our hydraulic elevators also provide that same smooth lift, and maximize the travel height of the elevator system.
• We deliver, install, and service using our own employees, not third-party contractors. Our work, and our team, is focused directly on our dealers, builders, and customers.

Introducing the GALaxy e Hydro Controller, a system that’s far easier to connect, and more economical to install.
e Hydro features a streamlined layout, reduces the number of conductors needed for installation, and uses small input modules to speed replacement. All boards have been coded to make sequential wiring possible and almost foolproof to perform.
GALaxy e Hydro uses serial communications and a universal connector, so any fixture can be used with only minimal wiring. It also provides a secure Wi-Fi connection, allowing you to consult our e Hydro App in the Machine Room. With the G4 Hydro App you can adjust system variables, check car status, consult fault logs, car and hall input/outputs and examine group and tracescreens.
e Hydro makes wiring less of a pain — making it essential for you.

which exceeds most states. Those same hours are accepted by many states to meet the mechanic’s licensing renewal requirements.
What is so important about a Certification that has an ANSI accreditation?
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) provides accreditation services in the areas of product and personnel certification. The CET Certification program has been accredited by ANSI-ISO-IEC 17024 since September 2011, making us the first in the elevator industry. This accreditation assures competency and reliability. It also promotes consistency and demonstrates equivalence of assessments via mutual recognition based on peer review. ANSI ensures the CET program continues to conform to the essential requirements.
Are you ready to set yourself apart from your competition? Contact us today to start your application process. Contact Kathy Bell at Kathy@naec.org or (800) 900-6232.
Why should you pursue and invest in NAEC’s Certification Program for your company?
The CET Certification adds credibility to your employees. Certified mechanics have had their practical skills and on-the-job training verified during the certification process. This process will demonstrate your employee’s knowledge of codes and applications. There are fewer Vocational Schools in the United States teaching skills that were previously taught in High School (i.e. Welding, Electrical, Wiring and Construction). The CET Certification provides additional vetting for those you hire.
Why should you have your employees obtain the CET Certification?
States are regularly passing licensing laws requiring elevator mechanics to either pass a competency test or complete an apprenticeship program. By using NAEC’s programs, individuals have found the process of obtaining a state licensing easier to manage. The CET Certification raises the bar by requiring annual continuing education of ten hours

NexGen is a group of young professionals who serve NAEC and its members of the elevator industry by bridging the gap between new and old, providing education, leadership development and peer networking with the goal of facilitating the transition between generations, for the future enhancement of our industry as a whole.
On August 23-26, a group of us, 17 NexGen men and women, gathered in Tucson, AZ for a few days of education, team-building, laughs, and the start of many friendships. Our group consisted of a split of suppliers and contractors and included many new faces from the previous two NexGen Summits.
The trip started off with a welcome reception where everyone was able to meet each other and relax in a laid back atmosphere. It was easy to see very quickly the camaraderie that would develop within the group.
Day two consisted of an all-day education session with Leadership Coach, Larry Hart. Larry’s education style allowed constant group sessions that gave everyone the opportunity to interact with all members of the group and get different insights about each of the topics. We all learned various tools to become a better leader in our company.
The next day started with an education session that reviewed the Project Management section of the VTMP program. As a group, we discussed several topics and followed a presentation that taught us a number of different areas about managing projects in the workplace. Later that night, we all got together at a nearby ranch to try our hand at team penning. This allowed us the opportunity to both unwind and work together as a team.
This was the most well attended NexGen Summit to date and we look forward to seeing even more new faces at the next event! If you would like information on NexGen and join us on our next event, contact Shawn@naec.org.
Open Call for Spring Conference PRESENTERS!
The NAEC Education Committee is now accepting submissions for educational session presenters for the 2019 Spring Educational Conference. This dynamic event, attended by approximately 200 owners and managers of NAEC member companies, allows attendees to unwind while attending informative educational sessions. It also provides opportunities to earn Continuing Education credits, establish strategic partnerships with other companies, network with old peers and new, and simply have fun.
Presenters will have the chance to receive some great benefits:
Booth points earned for NAEC Space Draw • Further exposure of your training through NAEC eLearning website Amazing professional development opportunity • Collaborate with other experts • Expand your professional portfolio
Be a part of a dynamic community that has made NAEC’s Conference the “must-attend” Educational event in the Elevator Industry! Contact Amanda Smith at Amanda@naec.org or 770.760.9660 for details.
