TOC #4

What makes something Living?

• Living things are organized• Living things respond to change• Living things use energy• Living things grow and develop• Living things reproduce

Living things are organized• Living things are organized by cells.–A cell is the smallest unit of life

• Some organisms are made of one cell and others are made of many cells

Living things respond to change

• Interact with their surrounding.–Stimulus – anything that causes some

change in an organism–Response – the reaction to a stimulus–Homeostasis - an organism’s ability to

keep proper conditions inside no matter what is going on outside.

Examples

Living things use energy• Energy used comes directly or indirectly

from the sun.• Plants take in energy from the sun.• We eat plants and other animals to get

energy.

Living things grow and develop

• Organisms change as they grow.• All changes that take place during life

are called development.

Living things reproduce• Reproduce is to make your own kind.• Without reproduction, living things

would not exist to replace those who die.

What do Living Things need?• A place to live• Raw materials–Water–Food (Proteins, fats, & sugars)

•If it was once living, it is always a living

thing!!

What are Non Living things?• Examples–Rocks–Clouds–Water–Gases

•BIOTIC – LIVING•ABIOTIC – NON LIVING
