READINGS OF THE WEEK COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God’s laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the de-struction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we contin-ue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individ-uals. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

Returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation: 4 Circumstances

There are reasons why we don't take advantage of this Sacrament...fear, shame, bad experiences of past con-fessions, a long time since the last reception of the Sacrament.

# 3: "I go frequently, but I confess the same serious things over and over again. It's a bit embarrass-ing because I keep confessing the same pattern over and over again. I can't seem to change and I keep coming to Confession because I want to keep going to Communion, but I wonder if I should." It is so important to keep coming to the Sacrament. We need God's grace and mercy. Without it, our efforts to stay close to the Lord are even more handicapped. The issue for us is to change our patterns. Some of our patterns might be deeply embedded habits. Others may have become addictions which require ther-apy or a 12 step program. What starts to change our hearts is to focus on leaving the celebration of the Sac-rament with deeper and deeper gratitude. The more we thank our Lord for his love and mercy is easier it is to resist temptation. Secondly, it is very important to put a pattern of prayer in place in our lives. Amendments like, "I trust you will be with me in this challenging situation I face this afternoon" will make our celebration of Sacrament lead to effective healing.

ADDITIONAL TIME FOR CONFESSION and COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE

The Pillars of Lent

PRAYER Prayer is the action that leads people to God. We take time away from the distractions of the world, to turn to God, to contemplate, to listen and talk to Him, to read His words and meditate on them, to be one with Him. Prayer gives meaning to Lenten practices, which should draw us closer to Him. FASTING Fasting is restricting consumption, depriving yourself of both good and bad things for the glory of God. This means normally watching whatyou eat on a day that it is practiced, one regular meal and two small ones. During Lent, we fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. ABSTINENCE is prac-ticed all Fridays of Lent. ALMSGIVING Almsgiving is the action that leads us Christians to see others, love them, listen to them and them our time, help, advice, money, shelter, company, affection. It is not limited to giving material goods., it is the gift of self. It is based on CHARITY, to love God and others as oneself. To give alms is to be united to Christ in His poverty.

LAY MINISTERS’ SCHEDULE FOR NEXT WEEKEND

TREASURES OF OUR TRADITION

Year B of the Lectionary has the Letter to the Ephesians today. Ephesus, today in Turkey, was in the first century a great Greek city, the center for the worship of Diana, the goddess of the hunt. It was a vast city even by modern standards, having nearly half a million people in the time of Paul. Yet that was a time of economic recession and moral decay. No wonder Saint Paul stayed here the longest. It gave him an enor-mous and religiously curious audience. His preaching stirred up the artisans who depended on the pilgrims who came to honor (and buy mementos of) seventeen gods and goddesses enshrined in the city’s temples. You can still see the open-air theater where Paul’s homily triggered a riot. Paul did have success here, and many conversions among Jews and Gentiles. They seem to have struggled with hope, perhaps because of their suffering from economic woes and isolation. Some old traditions say that the Apostle John lived out his days here, and that the Blessed Mother was cared for by him. There’s no biblical basis for this, but it is certain that a small house just outside the city has been treasured by Christians and Muslims for centuries as the last dwelling of Mary. Long ago, the har-bor silted up and the city was nearly abandoned, becoming a small village. As is so often the case, that acci-dent of history preserved the ancient city, so that archeologists have been very successful in revealing an-cient Christian sites. One such site is the Church of Mary, probably the first church to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and the site of the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, a visit to Ephesus is one of the most re-warding journeys for any pilgrim. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Don’t Be A Distracted Worshiper! Last Sunday, March 4, two cars were parked at the school staff parking lot.

Their rear windows were smashed and broken.

Lock Your Car. Shut windows and sunroof. Keep your valuables, out of sight! Window smashes are al-

most always the result of valuable items left in plain sight. Thieves like: laptops, mobiles, navigation systems any other electrical gadgetry.

Hide personal items. Purses, totes, backpacks, sunglasses, loose change left in plain view tempt thieves.,

Always put valuables in your trunk prior to parking so that no one sees you storing things. If you don’t have a trunk space, In Texas, a package of paper plates with forks and spoons were a thief’s booty.
