^fcllssouBl. The new Constitution of this State has '

been adopted by a majority of several thousand ^votes. The returns already received show a majority ^of 3000, and when complete returns are received, i

is estimated that it will not he very far Irom 5000. 9

The soldiers' vote was given almost unanimously for

the Constitution. A St. Louis correspondent of the'

New York Tribune gives the following reasons for £the large vote against the measure in that city

:

The Germans, as a general thing, have gone against -

the new Constitution. The explanation is simple.A majority of them are Infidels, and those who are *not free Thinkers are chiefly Roman Catholics. Thelargest number were opposed to the Constitution be-cause it repeated the language of the old Constitu- '

tion in recognition of the Supreme Ruler of the Uni-verse, and disqualified a witness who did not reeog- '.

nize the Almighty. The smaller class went with thebalance of the Catholics against the Constitution be-cause of the test oath required of the Priests. TheCatholics poured out their money like water to defeatthe measure, and the immense majority rolled up in ,

this city (5,895) shows that they were powerful op-ponents. The leading Germans have already re- rpented of their opposition, and it the fight were totake place again tomorrow the result would be very

i'dift'erent. The Germans do not like the company of ifCopperheads. ^
