2019Community Impact Report
I am very grateful for Duet’s congregational health program. Faith community nurses help to bridge the gap by providing resources and education to diverse populations,
and particularly with the vulnerable and underserved.
I have a place to turn to and be accepted. I am encouraged to stay the course and not feel like a
failure. I was truly losing it before I discovered Duet. Thank you!
My Duet volunteer is wonderful.
I would go without food because I couldn’t drive or shop on my own. Thank you all from
the bottom of my heart.
I have
received validation,
support, information,
and help that have all made
me a better parent figure.

A MESSAGE FROM ANN WHE AT, EXECUTIVE DIRE CTOR
With the retirement of Duet’s executive director Elizabeth Banta, after 23 years of dedicated service, 2019 was bound to be a year of transition. Duet’s Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers met the challenge with passion and enthusiasm that resulted in many process improvements, a 29th annual Poinsettia Tea that surpassed revenue goals, and nine new members joining Duet’s Vision Society as multi-year donors. 2019 also brought hundreds of
new friends to Duet, sharing their gifts as volunteers, donors, and community connectors. We are grateful for the gifts each of you brings to those we serve! As Duet heads toward our 40th anniversary, I am energized each day knowing that thousands of isolated elders, grandfamilies, family caregivers, and faith community nurses not only receive Duet’s vital services, but also essential human connection. We will never lose sight of our roots… one person helping another with a welcoming smile that says, “You matter, and we are here for you.”

All too often seniors feel isolated and alone as they face life’s aging challenges. We ease this journey by training faith community nurses to promote health, healing, and disease prevention to people within their faith community and their surrounding community. These nurses often provide resources and education to diverse populations, particularly with the vulnerable and underserved who often come up against barriers to accessible healthcare. Jim and Liz know firsthand the impact on a congregation of having a faith community nurse like Karen Hernandez. Liz affectionately shares, “We hadn’t been to church for a long time and Karen came to our house to visit. She just knew we needed help. Karen has helped Jim
and I understand this Parkinson’s situation and I don’t know if we would have been able to cope with this without her.” From home visits to exercise classes, faith community nurses are a vital first line of care and compassion because of their commitment to making a difference in mind, body, and spirit.
It is commonly thought that you lose your independence when you can no longer drive. Turning over the car keys is one of the hardest and most frightening decisions many seniors ever have to make. We bring the dignity of independent living by recruiting and training caring volunteers and pairing them with homebound adults whom we affectionately refer to as “neighbors.” Volunteers help neighbors with grocery shopping, rides to medical appointments, friendly visits and phone calls, paperwork assistance, minor handyperson repairs, and tech assistance. Because of your support, these services are free of charge. Christi is one of our neighbors who receives help from her Duet volunteer, Melissa. “If I had to pay for these services, I probably wouldn’t get them nearly as often,” exclaims Christi. “I feel very honored to have this service available to me.” As is often the case, our volunteers provide more than a means of transportation; they give the priceless gift of companionship and friendship.
When you are caring for a loved one, it is common to lose sight of taking care of yourself. The physical, emotional, financial, and emotional toll can be overwhelming. Your support of our family caregiver and grandfamily services is bringing help and hope to the hundreds of people who give of themselves to provide non-paid care for others. Six years ago, Frances and Mac put their personal retirement dreams aside and became parents for the second time around. “There were times when I just did not think we could raise a granddaughter at our age,” shares Frances. “Then, I would think back on things that I learned in the Duet support group, and it gave me hope that we can get through this.”We guide grandparents with the tools and resources to thrive and
keep families together. Sharing a household across generations is more manageable through our support groups, legal guidance and assistance, funds for extracurricular activities, one-on-one personalized guidance, educational workshops, and grandfamily outings. We care for caregivers through similar services as well as a Finding Meaning and Hope video discussion series for family caregivers of someone with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Through a partnership with the county and state health departments, we are taking this series beyond Maricopa County to help caregivers regain hope and build resiliency.
