Rotary Club Provides Dictionaries to StudentsPocahontas Rotary Club proudly presented dictionaries to third grade children in Pocahontas County: Pocahontas Catholic School, Pocahontas Area Community School District, Laurens-Marathon Community School District and Pomeroy-Palmer Community School District. Dictionaries were delivered to each student and their teachers. Third grade has been designated because the students are developing dictionary skills and are beginning to use other resource materials. In addition, students in third grade make the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. All formal education from this point through college is dependent upon the ability of each child to read and to understand what he or she reads. The Pocahontas Rotary Club wants our children to succeed in education by providing this resource to them. The students will benefit from the additional resources in the dictionary: International Atlas, Periodic Tables, Sign Language chart, Roman Numeral Tables, and other information.

Another Chilly night of racing at Algona Raceway April 20th!The races were cancelled on Saturday, April 13th because of weather, but were back in action April 20th. In the Heat for the Cruisers, the 00 car of Cody Hubbell and Ryan Hudson ended up 3rd, the 888 car of Sami Hudson and Bryan Claussen (Calry Lampe went to Prom, so Sami had to find a different driver for the night) ended up 5th. The 0 car of Colton Lampe and Tyler Stockwell was still having troubles, they rebuilt the tranny, and thought they were ready to go, went on a test drive, still same problem, so they changed the tranny. Then they blew up the motor! Hope their luck turns around soon!! Hubbell/ Hudson still not in their own car, hopefully soon. The Feature for the Cruisers was a little eventful. The Hubbell/ Hudson Car ended up 3rd, and the Hudson/Claussen car ended up 4th. Well, there was some complaining after the races and that sent the 2nd place car, #21 Brody Vader /Zach Vader to 3rd and the Hubbell/Hudson car to 4th, which moved Hudson/Claussen to 2nd! Jeremy Mills from Garner, formerly of Marathon, won his heat and took the trophy for the feature, too.

Troop 79 in front of the Thomas Ashford Scout Ranch sign. This was the last official function before the camp
will be sold.
On Saturday, April 20th Troop 46 Emmetsburg and Troop 79 Laurens combined their efforts to compete in the day’s challenges.
They won two awards. Third place in campsite inspection and honorable mention for teamwork. The judges were impressed how well the two troops
worked together to overcome the six challenges set for the day.
In their spare time they made a fort. It was a fun time to work on wood and timber skills. No trees were killed in the making of this fort.
No one goes hungry when you camp with the troop. This was Saturday supper, a troop favorite, stir fry. It had everything any one would like.

This is not the first time Laurens has been to Thomas Ashford Scout Ranch. This was on the wall, showing the town’s patch, along with area towns of Havelock, Rolfe, Albert City, Marathon, Pocahontas, Sioux Rapids, and Palmer. Each
town had it's own troop.
Some of the scouts went to the Van Dyke observation tower to take one last look before the camp closed. Kelly Gordon made the 2 mile trek for the last time. His first time there was in 1985 with his Boy Scout
Troop as a youth.

At the Library with Glenda MulderMay 1, 2013
I was so disappointed when I found out that Laurens Public Library was not chosen to be part of Dan Wardell’s IPTV Reading Road Trip this summer. So I sent him an e-mail inviting him to visit our library another time – possibly a morning that L-M had a late start. Well, he said yes! He will be here Wednesday, May 8th at 9:30 a.m. in the morning. I don’t know what he has planned, but he is a very high energy, enthusiastic guy who loves his libraries, so you know it’s going to be good! Join us if you can and be sure every kid you know is here. What a fun way to start the day! I can only imagine how wound
up the kids will be for their teachers on that late start day! New nonfiction this week includes: Duck Commander Family by Will Robertson, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris, Coolidge by Amity Shales and Let's Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. New fiction selections include: Fly Away by Kristin Hannah, Good People by Ewart Hutton, Taking Eve by Iris Johansen, The Famous and the Dead by T. Jefferson Parker, Mystery Woman by Amanda Quick, Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts (CD Book too!), 12th of Never by James Patterson (CD Book too), Orphan Train by Christina Kline, Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberkly McCreight, The Blossom Sisters by Fern Michaels (CD Book too), Apple Orchard by Susan Wiggs (CD book too) and The Hit by David Baldacci. May’s Book Club choice “Caleb’s Crossing” was written by Geraldine
Brooks, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2006 for her book “March.” This historical novel was inspired by the true story of Caleb, first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. One review I read calls Caleb & Bertha the narrator, “openhearted spirits who risk everything in a search of knowledge at a time of superstition
and ignorance.” This book was recommended by one of our regular members and I am looking forward to reading it!

Iowa’s 15 Community Colleges Join Forces for First Time to Improve Advanced Manufacturing WorkforceOfficials from all 15 Iowa community colleges assembled recently at the headquarters of ACT in Iowa City to announce an unprecedented opportunity to help improve the state’s manufacturing workforce. The Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (I-AM) is an Iowa community college initiative to elevate advanced manufacturing, funded through a previously announced $13 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant Program. I-AM will collaboratively build training capacity by developing non-credit and credit programs to help individuals earn industry-recognized credentials, diplomas and degrees for careers in Iowa’s advanced manufacturing sector. A key component of I-AM will be to capitalize on ACT’s Tomorrow’s Workforce Now (TWN) program, a national drive to bridge the gap in workplace skills. Designed to help place a set of proven ACT workforce solutions into the hands of business leaders and inspire collaboration among employers and community colleges, TWN also helps individuals document their strengths and earn credentials as they define a career path for their future. The I-AM initiative will target current and prospective advanced manufacturing employees through an assessment process. Additionally, any Iowa resident pursuing employment in any industry sector can take NCRC assessments at no cost as part of Gov. Terry Branstad’s Skilled Iowa Initiative. ACT will provide assessments and nationally recognized workplace credentials to qualified individuals participating in the statewide program. ACT will support the initiative with thousands of ACT WorkKeys® assessments, through which test takers may earn the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate Plus (NCRC™ Plus). I-AM is inviting Iowa advanced manufacturing employers to engage in the benchmarking of required occupational skills to strengthen the talent pipeline of current and future workers. Because advanced manufacturing typically involves high-tech products and processes, the skills required of workers in this segment are often more advanced than those in other settings. To secure an opportunity for participation, companies are asked to contact their local I-AM representative by May 15th. Employer engagement in I-AM initiatives will benefit thousands of Iowans interested in a career in advanced manufacturing. Each community college will administer assessments for the program and enhance both credit and non-credit programs to support manufacturing careers. Also, hundreds of participating employers will have an opportunity to measure and benchmark the skill sets of their employees and applicants. Manufacturing contributes the largest share of Iowa’s gross domestic product (GDP) at an annual level of $25.4 billion, or nearly 18 percent of the state’s economy. As of March 2012, Iowa’s manufacturing firms supplied 215,600 jobs to Iowans, representing 10.6% of the state’s total employment. Iowa ranks sixth among all states in the percentage of total GDP derived from the manufacturing sector.

Pocahontas County 4-H Robot ClubThe Pocahontas County 4-H Robot Club continues to build on their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math skills at their monthly meetings. Volunteer leaders Sue Jarvis and Greg Ahlrichs help the club members polish their skills. 4-H’s mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential through youth adult partnership and research based experiences. If you are a child in 4th through 12th grade and would like to participate in the Robot club or if you are an adult that would like to help children in the STEM learning, please contact the Pocahontas County ISU Extension and Outreach at 712-335-3103
Robot Club members look on to see if their programming skills will get the robot through the course.

Pocahontas County Extension Offers Home Food Preservation Program“In today’s economy, many Iowans are taking advantage of the land and garden spaces that are available to them to grow their own foods,” says Holly VanHeel, ISU Extension Nutrition & Health Program Specialist. “We are ‘rediscovering’ the joy and economies of home gardening and want to preserve that bounty to enjoy throughout the year by freezing, drying or canning those foods,” VanHeel shared. So, whether you have been canning for years or just starting out, an introductory program is being offered to bring up-to-date information and resources to you. The program will discuss the importance of using USDA-approved and tested recipes and methods to eliminate health concerns caused by improperly handled or preserved foods. Iowa State University Extension Nutrition and Health program specialists are eager to provide a general overview of home food preservation. This comprehensive program will touch on canning, both hot water bath and pressure canning, freezing, proper equipment, techniques and a review of dehydrating foods. The newest information regarding times, pressure, altitude, resources and more will be addressed. Please be present for this program on Thursday, May 9th at 1:30 pm or 5:30 pm at Pocahontas County Extension & Outreach Office. Register your participation by contacting Dianne Dirks at Pocahontas County Extension & Outreach, dianned@iastate.edu or (712) 335-3103. This is a great opportunity for anyone age 18 years or older interested in learning safe food preservation techniques. To be ready for preserving your harvest, Canner Food preservation information and answers to your questions is available by calling the Iowa State University toll free Answer Line 1-800-262-3804 or 1-800-735-2942 (Relay Iowa phone linkage for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals). The Answer Line is staffed Monday through Friday from 9 am – 12noon, 1 pm to 4 pm.
