Butterfly Food⊷ All butterflies eat nectar and

drink fresh water from puddles or streams.

⊷ They use their proboscis to suck up the nectar and water

⊷ Only eat during the day

Life SpanMust butterflies hatch in the spring or early summer.

They live for about 4-5 weeks.

Butterflies that hatch at the end of summer can live as long as nine months.

Check out the next page to see what these butterflies do during colder months!

How do butterflies survive?Predators ● Camouflage: Some butterflies can

hide from predators with camouflage wings

● Vibrant colors: Some butterflies have bright colors that serve as warnings to predators that they taste bad or are poisonous!

Seasons/Weather

Butterflies that live for 9 months tend to migrate to warmer climates during the colder winter months.

Butterflies cannot fly in cold weather. After they migrate, butterflies roost (gather on a tree) by spreading their wings to absorb the sun’s heat to warm them up!
