THE same ships that bring Hyundai andKia cars to Australia are being used tobackload new VF Commodores from Ade-laide to the eastern states.

The switch to ships, in addition to thetraditional trains and trucks, is helpingHolden make ground on a backlog of Com-modore and Cruze orders despite extracosts including wages and insurance forthe sea freighting.

Holden has shipped more than 1000 carssince making the move and has no intent-ion of backing away from the bulk deliver-ies in the short term.

GM Holden sales and marketing man-ager Philip Brook told Carsguide: ‘‘We’redoing it up the east coast to Melbourne,Sydney and Brisbane. We did a boatloadlast month and we’re doing another boat-load this month.

‘‘We’re trying to get the cars out as fastas possible, to keep people happy. It helpsto bulk them all up. We have to build them,hold them, batch them, then ship them.

‘‘We pay a bit of a premium, but it’smore efficient from a time perspective.We’re trying to fill up the pipeline. Theminimum load is 500 cars and we shipped750 last month.’’

Brook said the first month of VF sales

was solid without setting any records, asthe company battled to have the right carsin the right place.

‘‘We didn’t have a spectacularly goodmonth in terms of registrations lastmonth, (but) the order rate is strong,’’Brook said.

‘‘Our challenge is that we’ve got a redcar and someone wants a black car. Or it’san SV6 at the dealership and they want anSS with a V8. I’d expect by the end of thismonth we’ll be in relatively good shape,with the right cars in the right mix.’’

He said the good news for Holden in-cluded the popularity of the top-line, andhigh profit, models in the VF range.

‘‘We had a plan for a rich mix, which isgood, but it looks like it’s even richer,’’ hesaid. ‘‘It’s Calais-V and SS-V..’’

Brook predicted a strong July result forHolden but admitted the company hadbeen shaken by the Federal government’sannouncement on new Fringe BenefitsTax compliance.

‘‘There is a little spanner in the worksaround this FBT change, which has cre-ated a fair bit of uncertainty. It’s mostlylarge fleets,’’ Brook said.

‘‘There is already uncertainty whenthere is an election, but there is more withthe policy change.’’
