Attuned to early toil
Country music singer Adam Harvey has just released his new albumHe’d tell me that as long as I kept
singing I’d never buy a drink
By ROSS PURDIE
in Sydney
COUNTRY music singerAdam Harvey remem-bers his days workingthe gold mines nearBendigo.
At 36, his baby-facedlooks may belie thecountless hours of man-ual labour, but Harveynever forgets what hetook out personally.
One of his old work-mates there, the lateBilly Brenner, taughthim a vital life lesson. Byinstructing Harvey howto strip out old enginesand service earthmoving
gear, he also instilledin him the idea of doing ajob properly.
Harvey attributes hisearly apprenticeship tothe successful music ca-reer that followed. Withseven Golden GuitarAwards and 300,000 al-bums sold, Harvey hasbecome one of Austra-lia’s most enduring coun-try music stars.
Never one to forget, thefirst song on his new al-bum, Built to Last, paystribute to Brenner.
‘‘Billy taught me aboutgetting things right fromthe start and always said
that if you take yourtime, it’ll last forever,’’Harvey says.
More tangible lessonswere learnt duringHarvey’s young yearsdigging for gold. Longdays at work would fin-ish at the local pub, where a music-lovinglandlord would encour-age Harvey to pick up alone guitar and entertainthe other miners.
‘‘He’d tell me that aslong as I kept singing I’dnever buy a drink,’’Harvey says.
‘‘I’d play requests forminers all night andthey’re a tough crowd, so
I thought if I can enter-tain all these blokes inthis rowdy pub it mightbe worth making a go ofit full time.’’
Harvey’s break cameduring a trip to Tamwor-th in 1998, where he wonhis first country musicaward with singer TanyaSelf for their duet DriveAway, before signing toWarner Music.
While much ofHarvey’s songwritingcan be traced to the min-ing pub at Fosterville, these days his inspi-ration is his local water-ing hole in Bateau Bay
on the Central Coast.New songs like Hair ofthe Dog, One More Beerand The Bay Hotel sug-gest Harvey is still proneto perform for the oddschooner.
‘‘I love a party and adrink but not as much asI used to because thehangovers hurt too much
these days,’’ he sayswith a laugh.
Other tracks from hisseventh album, Fallinginto Place, unleash hisusual mix of good timesand catchy choruses.
It’s a vibe the singercarries into his liveshows. He is set to tourin the coming months.
