FROM OUR RABBI, SAMUEL L. SPECTOR
NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM! I write this bulletin article from the Salt Lake International Airport with our thirteen confirmation students as we fly to Washington D.C. to join hundreds of other teens in exploring our Jewish American identities and advocating on behalf of our Jewish values. Synagogue travel is important to me for two reasons: one it is important for us to explore Judaism and our Jewish identities outside of Utah, and, secondly, it is important that we serve as ambassadors to let the world know of our small, but strong and vibrant, Utah Jewish Community.
Over Rosh Hashanah, I said in my sermon that increasing our travel opportunities from Congregation Kol Ami is an important part of my vision for our community. With that said, I am happy to announce that CONGREGATION KOL AMI IS GOING TO ISRAEL!
We will be organizing an intergenerational, family Israel trip from August 2 – 13, 2020, where we will travel throughout Israel with Amiel Tours seeing the top sites, off-the-beaten-path locations, and doing some volunteer work. Whether you have been to Israel or have not, this will be the trip of a lifetime. Space is limited to 44 participants. We will be having
an informational session at the synagogue on Sunday, April 28th at 10:00 am. Please join us to learn more about this experience.
Speaking of Israel, I am also excited to announce that this June, I will be going to Israel with professors from Hebrew Union College and Brigham Young University for an academic dialogue, from which we will produce a book, as part of an interfaith mission. I believe that this trip will help build relations between our community and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Utah leadership. I am honored to get to represent the Utah Jewish Community in this extraordinary opportunity.
Finally, I am working actively with Cantor Wendy Bat-Sarah to add a second post-B’nai Mitzvah trip, in addition to our D.C. confirmation trip, to the curriculum beginning next year. Details to come!
I look forward to joining with your families on these exciting adventures to explore our nation, our world, and our Judaism in new, memorable, and lifechanging ways.

CONGREGATION KOL AMI • PUBLICATION NUMBER 2 FOR THE YEAR 20194
FROM OUR CANTOR, WENDY BAT-SARAH
AND THE YOUTH SHALL SEE VISIONS…The Rafi Schwartz Religious School creates students who are active participants in the intellectual, religious, and cultural traditions of Judaism.
We do that by providing our students with a wide variety of cultural experiences, such as Israeli folk dancing, cooking with Biblical ingredients, or writing and painting to express the inner meaning of traditional prayers. We maintain high standards for Hebrew, and for Torah and Haftarah chanting. More than anything, we expect our students to be leaders. We have a dedicated crew of TAs, some of whom turn into Assistant Teachers, and one who is currently a lead teacher!
One of the areas where our students express leadership is through prayer leading. The Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grades will be leading Friday night Shabbat services on April 12th, and the 3rd and 4th Grades led services on March 8th. Best of all, the 5th and 6th grades will be leading Teacher Appreciation Shabbat on Saturday, May 4th. What a delight it is to honor our teachers by showing them how much their students have learned!
I want to encourage everyone to show our students your support by attending each and every student-led event. My goal as an educator has always been to provide children with an opportunity to show just how much they can do. With training, even the youngest students can help to lead meaningful, “real,” Shabbat services. The support and respect of their entire community will go a long way towards letting them know how much Judaism means to all of us. Please be sure to attend every service that features our students. You will be as thrilled as I am with their dedication and achievements.
April 12th: Kindergarten, 1st, & 2nd Grade Shabbat, Community Shabbat Dinner to follow
May 4th: 5th & 6th Grade and Teacher Appreciation Shabbat, luncheon to follow
June 8th: 10th Grade Confirmation Shabbat Service, luncheon to follow

CONGREGATION KOL AMI • PUBLICATION NUMBER 2 FOR THE YEAR 2019 5
FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE INTENTIONThe recent United Jewish Federation Ben Gurion Event honored Dr. Jay Jacobson, a Kol Ami member and former Congregation President and Jody Gross. The featured speaker of the evening was Brooke Sebold, a documentary and narrative filmmaker, whose amazing story of a near-death ski accident and the resulting years of surgeries and setbacks impressed me deeply. Her story was one of faith and hope, and the support of others who gave her the strength to fight and heal. It was her words of the “power of collective intention” that struck me most.
In a way, her message of the power of individual contributions to the power of the collective makes me think of our Kol Ami journey. We are made up of so many individuals on our own individual Jewish journeys, but we have also all come together at this time and in this place to honor the traditions
of our Jewish faith and heritage and to add new chapters to our never-ending story.
Kol Ami is experiencing a giant burst of growth and energy and with that we have many new memberships. Expanding our tent, brings with it greater diversity; single and married, conventional and unconventional families. We have more new Jews joining our tribe. Our old members are being joined by new younger members who are leading our services, participating in our programs, and feeding our religious school. Our clergy are providing us with thought-provoking educational experiences and we’re celebrating and growing closer as a holy community.
None of this could happen without your connection and contributions to our Kol Ami Family. Your presence at our services, classes, and programs strengthens us in
ways only you can contribute. It brightens our shul when you show up; and when you bring a partner, spouse, significant other, or child our light glows even brighter. Please take a moment to say “hi” to our clergy, staff, and board and let us know how we’re doing and what else you would like to see. Our collective intention to honor our past and explore new ways to be Jewish is what guarantees a Jewish future here in Utah and for our children and their children.
As we head into the spring and summer, we hope to see you at Passover and Shavuot programs, in Esther’s Garden, at summer home Friday Shabbat Services, at our beloved Koffee House event, and at any reason you find to join us at Congregation Kol Ami—a congregation for all our people!

Learn More, Play More
The Playful Learning Preschool at Kol Ami understands that play is a child’s work and essential for developing creativity, imagination, and other high level thinking skills. We believe all children, as natural learners, learn best through play, having
hands on experiences and making their own discoveries.
Several early learning options are available for children ages 2 to 5. Parents choose full or half days, three or five days a week. After Care is also available.
About Our Summer CampThe new Playful Learning Summer Camp offers your child a fun-filled active summer. Weekly theme-based activities, hands-on experiences, fieldtrips, and special guests
make up our 10-week camp program. Camp begins Monday, June 3rd and ends Friday, August 9th. The same early learning options for children ages 2 to 5 offered during
the school year are available during summer camp.
Parents may choose with advance notice, to take two weeks off during Summer Camp, tuition free, for family vacations. Summer Camp pre- and post-weeks are available.

We are excited to be installing beautiful new chairs into our Main Sanctuary, adding comfort and aesthetic appeal to our worship experience. These chairs are where we, as a community, will sit together in unity to pray, to learn, and to celebrate many Simchas. In these chairs, our community members will sit at difficult moments, no longer having to be uncomfortable as they remember a loved one in anticipation of Kaddish.

UTAH JEWS FOR REFUGEESYou're invited to join Utah Jews for Refugees (UJR). UJR serves as a forum for communication within the Jewish community of Utah, on what groups and individuals are doing in support of refugees, to announce refugee-related events and activities, to announce volunteer needs for refugee assistance, and to ask questions. A number of the Jewish groups in Salt Lake City are already doing good things in support of refugees, and we want our community to know about that. While we have not yet established a distinct program in and of itself, we are now part of the State of Utah’s refugee service providers group, and offer to assist in ways that we can. UJR is a partner with HIAS, the national Jewish Refugee Resettlement Agency, and we are in their network of other Jewish coalitions around the country supporting refugees.

SALE OF CHAMETZ IN PREPARATION FOR PASSOVER
We are commanded to remove all Chametz, "leaven" from our homes and possessions for the duration of the celebration of Passover. That is the reason why we painstakingly clean our homes prior to the holiday and why we search for crumbs of Chametz on the eve of the holiday with a candle and a feather. On the following morning, preceding Passover, we burn this leave, thus symbolically proclaiming our completion of an action intended to physically remove all Chametz from our possession.
In fact, with the best effort and intention we will probably overlook some scrap of Chametz, so we proceed to ritually sell all leftover leaven. Since we no longer have ownership of this leaven, if some remains in our homes, we are nevertheless not violating the law.
The laws of this sale are rather complex and requite the construction of the proper instrument for effecting the transaction. Rabbi Samuel L. Spector will undertake the sale on behalf of the synagogue and any of its membership that appropriately designate him as their agent.
This is a real sale, not a mere legal fiction and is final and irrevocable. Rabbi Samuel L. Spector will, at the end of the holiday, repurchase any Chametz from the non-Jew to whom it was sold. Because this is a legal contract, the exchange of money is mandatory. Please include your check payable to Congregation Kol Ami, with the completed Power of Attorney and return it to the Synagogue office no later than 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 17th. Money not used for this legal transaction will be considered Tzedakah (a donation).
I/We _________________________ hereby authorize Rabbi Samuel L. Spector to dispose of all Chametz in my/our possession wherever it may be, in accordance with the requirements of Jewish Law incorporated in the special contract for the sale of Chametz.

RABBI WENGER WONDERS
Haveirim,
2019 / 5779, being the fiftieth year since I was ordained a Rabbi at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, I was asked by the Central Conference of American Rabbis to prepare a reflection on my rabbinate. I thought you might enjoy reading it as I enjoyed sharing it with colleagues. It's an idealistic statement. I pray I may endeavor to live up to it:
About the time I was ordained, Arnold Jacob Wolf alav ha-shalom, wrote a paper entitled, The Ideal Synagogue. I have saved it over the years. With modification it represents the dream of an ideal congregational rabbi I have harbored for half a century and even before.
What if there were a God? A God who was alive, concerned, somehow connected with the Jews. What, then, would the Synagogue be like? It would be a place of prayer directed toward the living God, where one could study God's cryptic communiques to man and humbly try to enact God's will in life... No poor man, no victim, no brother in need would be unwelcome to entreat these Jews. All of these deeds of the congregation would be in the service of God. Service of self would not be the purpose of that congregation. Strenuous work in prayer, in study, and in acts of compassion would preempt time or energy for self congratulation or for amusement... Entering that congregation would mean submission, not to the Rabbi or the board, but to the One who called the world (and the Synagogue) into being.
(That Synagogue would be a congregation) where all views are welcome if those who hold them do
not run away but seek further, where an atheist is (only) one who lives everywhere as if there were no God.)
The Rabbi of such a congregation will open the substance of his faith to public inspection and the accuracy of his knowledge will be on trial every day. His members will want his concern and will offer him their advice. He will learn more than he meant to learn. He will be pushed to extremities of creativity he finds dangerous and new... He will see the awful emptiness of the contemporary American Jew and most of all, his own and his predestined failure will be in the service of the Utmost... He will stand for something, some One—and encourage his people to become both free and committed.
Perhaps this congregation under God is Utopian. But Utopia is only what some call the Messiah. Messianic is what takes a long time, and Jewish is what we can do immediately.
My immediate Rabbinate has been far from this ideal, but it has been closer than many. Its best years, the greater majority, have been spent at congregations which hold active membership in both the Reform and Conservative Movements. In West Virginia and Utah I have come to learn that Judaism is a uniter of diverse Jews once they come to face and accept the commonalities of our Covenant.
Inspiring my Rabbinate have been teachings of four of my Rabbis. I paraphrase them slightly. Rabbi Maurice Pekarsky of the University of Chicago Hillel taught me: Judaism is a discipline for making a Jew into a better person. Rabbi Petuchowsky of HUC-JIR taught me: You come here wanting to be a Rabbi, but first you have to learn how
to be a Jew. Rabbi Jacob Radar Marcus taught me: Remember, Rabbis, you are in sales, not in management. God is the Manager. Rabbi Sheldon Blank taught me: For Jews, hope is a duty.
All these teachings have led me into an active life teaching, preaching, leading worship, officiating at life cycle events from womb to tomb, representing the Jewish community to the non-Jewish world from Mormons to Muslims, counseling, administering, mentoring, and nurturing potential Jews and non-Jews who love Judaism, attending an infinity of meetings, helping to set policy, distributing tzedakah, executing the will of a bachelor philanthropist, and even janitoring. All in all, I've been neither a Rav nor a Rebbe, but proudly a Reform Rabbi who teaches Judaism to Conservative and Reform Jews in Salt Lake City.
In retirement, I have spent three wonderful seasons in Israeli Youth Villages and nearly four fulfilling years as Rabbi in Residence in Alaska. I taught world religions in a liberal arts college for eleven years. Twice, in between my successors, I've assumed full Rabbinic duties. I belong to two Havuot.
Rochelle and I continue our lives together in Salt Lake City, the place that has become our home. I continue to teach teens and adults and officiate when asked in the Synagogue where we raised our two wonderful children. Close friends surround us here, and two plots await in the Salt Lake Jewish Cemetery.
In 1987, Rabbi Morris Hershman of the URJ told me: If you can raise a merger of convenience into a vision, you'll be success. I'm still working at it.

GRAVE MATTERS
By Carol Hochstadt
CREMATION REVISITED — THE FINAL DESTINATION A Grave Matters article published in 2010 provided basic information about Judaism’s approach to cremation vs. traditional burial. Recent requests for revisiting the topic have spawned this column, which goes beyond the basics by raising some questions that should be considered before a Jew decides to choose cremation (which is discouraged by all branches of Judaism).
What will be the final destination of the cremated remains (“cremains”)?
Most professionals who work with mourners agree that a specific final destination for cremains is very important. Some people put the cremains in a closet or on a mantle without thought as to what will become of them many years in the future. Will the next generation want to inherit cremains or will they be discarded over the years? A funeral director told me that he received a call from someone in California who had purchased a large box of books at a garage sale. Near the bottom of the box was an urn holding the cremains of someone who had died in Utah. With the help of police, the shocked purchaser was able to locate the family that had inadvertently sold “grandma” in a grab-bag of books. Another local person who missed her husband’s company chose to put the container with his cremains into the trunk of her car—so that she could take him with her wherever she went. Five years later, she called a mortuary because she was too “weirded out” to open her trunk. She drove her car to the mortuary so that they could open the trunk, remove her husband, and install him in a niche at the cemetery; she could now place things in her trunk. If people cannot let go of a loved one’s cremains (by placing them in a final destination), ultimately in future years those cremains may be treated with an unintended lack of respect.
What final destination is available for Jewish cremains in Utah?
Locally, we accept cremated remains for in-ground burial only in our (Reform) B’nai Israel Cemetery. Because we do not encourage

cremation, we have not built a columbarium or place where containers can be placed in a niche. The benefit of in-ground burial is that the mourners will know that their loved one’s remains, and the permanent marker they erect, are located at a consecrated place where they may visit. We have heard laments from many relatives whose loved ones have rejected a permanent burial in favor of being scattered, so we encourage you to be aware of your family’s feelings before choosing this path. If you elect in-ground burial for cremains, optionally we can sell a second “Right to Burial” so that a couple may both be buried within one plot.
If I don’t want burial, what legal destination options are available to me?
There are several legal options available; most importantly, if you are considering the “scattering” option, find out if a permit is required for the location and ensure that your family follows the rules. One popular scattering location, Disney World, absolutely forbids it. People are escorted out of the park if caught, and a “HEPA cleanup” vacuum is used to remove any remains. On the other hand, national parks allow scattering, but they require a permit. By obtaining a permit, you are promising that you will restrict scattering to specified areas (which do not include trails, campgrounds, etc.). The Utah Code
(58-9-611) is very specific on “Disposition of cremated remains” and should be consulted. Laws such as The Clean Water Act protect inland rivers and lakes from becoming polluted by cremains so a permit is required by whatever state agency manages each particular waterway. It is illegal to scatter cremains on the grounds of a cemetery except if they have a dedicated scattering garden.
What might go wrong?
Unfortunately, many cremains are not collected at the mortuary by a family representative and they remain unclaimed. Internal family strife or indecision regarding the final destination is one reason, with ignorance/forgetfulness being another. Finally, since picking up the cremains brings home the reality of the death, some people cannot bring themselves to face it. The Jewish burial ritual, with its speed and the finality of lowering the casket and shoveling soil onto it, clearly addresses the need to help a family to face the sad reality. Cremation, which is a more “arm’s length” activity, lacks the psychological impact that is so helpful for the mourners.
We would be happy to provide you with a copy of our previous article about cremation; please send your request via the “Contact Us” tab on the Cemetery Association’s website at www.jewishcemeteryutah.org.
