Dear Brother Knights,
We have just concluded our month of October with our devotion to our Lady – The Daily Rosary that was supported by the different groups of the parish and a growing number of parishioners. It is very encouraging to see some young teens coming out each week and joining us to honour Mother Mary. I hope we have a better turn out of our membership in May when we start our May devotion to our Lady. We need to lead by example and what better way to teach our children then by getting them to say the Rosary with other parishioners.
We had a very successful Awards and Anniversary Night and a big Thank You to all
brothers and families that came out and showed your support. The reviews
received after the event was very good and it only goes to show that when we
support each other and work together the results are astounding.
The coming months are going to be busy for everyone and I request brothers and
families to think about sharing with those less fortunate as this is the season of
sharing and an opportunity to do some good deeds for the upcoming advent
season. We have started the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Drive in our council.
A simple donation of $150 can make a difference in someone’s life around the
globe where there is no barrier of cast, creed, gender or religion. Imagine your
simple donation of $150 can change someone’s life forever and you cannot fathom
the joy it brings to them by your generosity.
Let us build ourselves also spiritually by attending mass more frequently, visiting
the adoration chapel to thank our Lord for all that we already have rather than to
go and pray when we have a problem or face a difficulty. Let’s learn to pray and
give thanks and I am sure the Holy Spirit will protect you from difficult situations.
After watching the movie ‘The Triumph’ the apparitions of Our Lady at Medjugorje
which is still happening, we as men of faith and Knights of Columbus need to
emphasize even more on the power of prayer and living a simple life and putting
our faith before all our materialistic desires.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER RYCE SARGEANT
This year’s fall campaign kicked off with Mass at Holy Name Parish on September 23 and ends on November 3rd. Deputy Grand Knight Lorenzo Ranada and wife Julie represented St. Paul Parish at this Mass.
October 6 was the day St. Paul Parish stood on guard for the unborn at the Vancouver vigil site, BC Women’s Hospital. This was also Respect Life Sunday and traditionally the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, great lover of all God’s creation and namesake of our Pope Francis.
The prayer vigil started at 6am under the escort of our early bird Knight Bro. Tony Banting and ended at 8pm with DGK Bro. Lorenzo Ranada doing wrap-up. All throughout the day, a steady stream of Knights and their families, as well as other St. Paul parishioners joined in to pray for an end to abortion.
We thank God for this beautiful autumn day on which we stand united to proclaim the sanctity of life and to give public witness that life is a gift to be cherished from conception to natural end!

Once again for the 2nd
year we held our month of October Devotion – The Daily Rosary to our Lady every evening around 7.30 pm or after evening mass over the weekends. We are very fortunate to have a great number of devoted members and parishioners that came out every day and joined us in praying for the general intercession for peace and for our fight for pro- life causes. In the weeks leading up to the start of the Rosary we were fortunate to have brothers that lent their talent and skill in beautifying the little niche we have for our Lady outside the Adoration Chapel and it’s through the effort of Bro John Koop who worked on the lights on Mother Mary’s crown and Bro Roger Delacruz who mended and repainted the statue for us in time to start the Rosary on October 1st. This statue dedicated to the memory of the unborn was funded by our Late Bro John Harrison and was undertaken at various stages in completion by a group of our brother knights and families. Among them were Late Bros Gerry Puchalski, Jean O Shaughnessy, John Fitzgibbons, Tom Perrins and John Kalley. Also members, our very active brothers like Peter McDonagh, Rod Winning, Mike McAtasney, Marcel Shellekens, Ron Keras, Tony Pimentel, Albert Quilay, Elio Gasparetto, John Koop, Alberto Nisperos, Edgar Ursua,
Kim Ng and Stan Leong. I am sure there must have been more brothers that lent their support and assistance in creation of the beautiful place. This project even went on to win the council a State Award at the BC and Yukon State Convention in the Millennium year.
We are grateful to
our brother knights
because it is
through their effort
and foresight we are
able to pay homage
and venerate our
Lady every day
when we pass by
the Church and are
able to have the
May and October
Devotion. It is even
greater to see other
groups of the parish
taking a keen
interest in joining us for the rosary and I would like to
thank the Lifeteen/Spirit Group for their dedication of
leading us in the
rosary and also the
CWL and Legion of
Mary for their
support.
On the conclusion of
the Rosary a small
gathering was held
for all who attended
the last 31 days and
we thank Bro Francis
and Joan Lee, Bro
John & Lolita Ty that
undertook to lead us
in prayer for our
October Devotion.

The Knights of Columbus has been supporting this organisation since 2003 and has become a
partner in providing this wonderful service to our brothers and sisters in this world. So far the
foundation has been able to reach those that are stricken by War, Old Age, Sickness and other
forms of calamites in this world and has delivered wheelchairs free of cost to places such as Cuba,
Mexico, Poland, Philippines, Afghanistan, Iraq, Dominican Republic and also here at home in
Canada and the USA just to name a few.
The Mission of this foundation is
- Raising awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities.
- Delivering mobility into the lives of those who have no means to acquire a wheelchair
- Transforming lives through Mobility, and with it giving Freedom, Dignity & Hope
We have started the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Drive here at our Council over the last few
months at our Pancake Breakfast and have also started spreading the word through our members
and families. We are determined to support donations for at least 100 Wheelchairs and have
targeted to accomplish this by December 2013. I am sure with your help and networking each
member can easily accomplish our goal. The cost of providing a new wheelchair is a mere
$150 and if each interested brother or family can support just 2 donation forms we can
accomplish this even sooner. If you would like to know more about this wonderful organisation
please visit the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation Booth set up at each pancake breakfast or visit
the website www.cdnwheelchair.ca.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
We had a very good turnout for our support for the Thanksgiving Food for Families Drive.
Thanks to the Food Bank Program Coordinator, Bro Alan Veary who brought it to the notice of
the Executive Committee that the quantity and quality of food donation was on the decline. A
meeting was held with a few key members and colourful posters and attractive ads were run
in the parish bulletin and emails were sent out to the general membership also to support this
drive.
We were pleased to see that our observation and quick action has reaped a good support
from the community and Bro Alan Veary and I have taken a total of sixteen boxes of food to
the food bank before Thanksgiving Day.
Our response is still having an effect as the Food Bank Box located in the church is filled to the
top almost every second day and we have been making more frequent trips to the food bank
to deliver these items.
Thank you all, brothers and families, that have come out to support this call and help those
that are in need of these essentials. Remember “What so ever you do to the least of my
brethren you do unto me “. May the Lord bless you abundantly and always keep you in his
care.

Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro John and Lolita Ty as being chosen he Family of the Month
for October. Bro John has been with our council since 2008 and is currently a 4th degree member.
He has been active in the council and is there to help us with any event. Ever since he joined he has been
instrumental in recruiting new members and remains very active in council activities and is a strong
supporter of our daily rosary devotion during the month of May and October along with his wife Lolita.
Besides this they always volunteer their hours at the perpetual adoration chapel and have supported our
very own Knights of Columbus Day of Prayer that we do once a month on a 24 hours basis.
It is very gratifying to see members and spouses that contribute so much to our order and never hesitate
to take on any challenge that arises. We are blessed in abundance with such great people and Bro John &
Lolita Ty are a superb example of such people.
Thank You Bro John & Lolita Ty for all you keep on doing for the council and your commitment to the
parish and the community of St Paul parish. Keep up your good work and inspire more people to follow in
your footsteps.
Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro Alan Veary as being chosen the Knight of the Month.
Bro Alan has been with this council since 2010 and has always been an active member. He has attended
meetings, first degree, seniors’ luncheon and various other council events. He has taken a more active part
in council affairs since the last 2 years and was elected to the Executive Committee. He has since also taken
on the job behind the scene at our monthly year-round pancake breakfast and also has taken the
responsibility of the Food Bank Coordinator for ‘Food For Families’ drive for the council.
He is a pleasant quiet natured person and usually goes about his business without attracting much
attention to himself but he takes an active part at meetings and discussions and always has valid
suggestions to make this council better. It is a great joy for a council to have such strong committed
members that are always looking at ways to improve things and we appreciate all the input we receive from
him.
Thank you Bro Alan for your commitment and hard work and please continue with the excellent service that
you provide to the council.
