The KHS boys basketball team completes their weekend doubleheader with a Saturday matinee
game with the Muncie Central Bearcats. The games at the Muncie Fieldhouse begin with a 1:30
JV tip.
The Bearcats are 0-13 so far this season with a North Central Conference game tonight at
Harrison.
The ‘Cats have had several games where they have been close to victory. They fell to Pendleton
Heights by two, to Anderson by three in overtime, and to Arsenal Tech by three.
Muncie Central is 0-5 in the NCC, one-half game behind Kokomo (1-5).
Muncie Central’s last win came in the 2020 sectional when they defeated Richmond 60-54. Their
last regular season win came 349 days ago on February 28th, 2020, a 56-36 win over New Castle.
The Bearcats average 49.2 points per game while allowing 71.5.
The Muncie offensive average is the worst in the NCC at 49.2. Closet to them are the Berries of
Logansport at 54.6. In one varsity game, Central scored 16 points; that came against Brownsburg.
The Bearcats have scored over 60 points just three times this season, both those have come in late
January or early February. Their season high is 86 points, scored last Saturday against Anderson
in overtime.
The Bearcats have held just three opponents under 60 points. Their defensive average of 71.5 is
also the worst in the NCC.
The Sagarin Ratings have Muncie Central as the 259th best team in Indiana and the 97th best in
Class 4A. Kokomo’s numbers are 153rd best in the state and 97th best in the class.
Muncie Central has the toughest schedule of all the NCC schools and the 27th hardest in the state,
Muncie’s 13 opponents have combined for a 110-89 record, while Kokomo’s 16 foes have a 171-
97 overall mark.
The Bearcats have had just three winning seasons in the last 10 years.
Two of the four teams that Kokomo has defeated this season have winning records. Marion is 10-
6 and Lewis Cass is 9-7.
Kokomo had been 0-6 in road games this year until winning at Tipton last Saturday.
Kokomo is 17-17 in games played on Saturday under Coach Bob Wonnell.
John Harrell’s website predicts another Wildkat victory, 65-57.
Saturday’s game between Kokomo and Muncie Central will be the 125th meeting between the two
North Central Conference rivals.
The Bearcats hold a 74-50 advantage in the series, which dates back to a split of games in the
1905-06 season.
Over the last 84 years, the two schools have played each other at least once with the exception of
the 1963-64 school year when Muncie Central was suspended from IHSAA play.
Kokomo hasn’t beaten the Bearcats at the Fieldhouse since December 11, 2009.
The Wildkats have lost five straight to Central in games played in Muncie.
Only two schools have beaten Kokomo more times than have the Bearcats (74). Anderson has 90
wins over the Kats, and Marion has 83.
The Bearcats return no starters from last season’s game with Kokomo.
The 2020-21 Muncie Central roster has seven seniors, two juniors, and four sophomores.
Muncie Central is last in the NCC in field goals made and field goal percentage. They rank ninth
in three-point attempts as well as free throw attempts. They are also ninth in rebounding in the
league.
Malik Hasani, a 6’0” sophomore, is the top scorer for this year’s Bearcats, average 13.7 points per
game. No one else averages over nine points per game. Hasani’s season best effort came against
Jay County when he had 25, over half of Central’s points in the 54-47 loss to the Patriots.
B.J. Isom scored a season high 22 points in the overtime loss to Anderson.
Michael Lowe is the leading rebounder at 6’3”. He averages 5.5 per game.
Chandler Thompson is the fourth year coach at Muncie Central, where he graduated in 1988. As a
senior, Thompson led the Bearcats to an IHSAA boys basketball state championship and was
named to the Indiana All-Star team. He later played a key role on Ball State’s 1990 Sweet 16
team. After college, Thompson played professional basketball overseas before taking a position as
an assistant coach under Jack Keefer at Lawrence North for 11 years. Thompson, who took over
the Bearcat program from former coach Jeff Holloway, is 31-54 as the Bearcat coach, 2-1 in
games against the Wildkats, and 1-0 in games against the Kats in Muncie.
