Project Internet Catalonia: a holistic vision

The presence of the Internet in the educative centers

• Dimensions of the analysis

Availability: To what extent do the educative centers use their website? Are there differences between types of center in this aspect?

Functionality: To what ends do the educative centers use the Internet? What form does this presence on the web take?

Method I: Research design

Observational study over a representative sample of 350 schools and high-schools of Catalonia (Spain)

This random sample gives us an error margin of ±5.1% for every descriptive result

Fieldwork conducted by two independent coders in May-June 2005

Method II: Coding Sheet

1. Coding information (center code, date of observation and code of the observer)

2. General information about web disposal3. The school as organization

a. Information about the educational centerb. Ways to stay in-touch (online and offline)

4. The teaching and learning processa. Information about learning and teachingb. Ways to get involved (online) in the educational practices

5. The librarya. Information about the library services and online catalog

6. The parent associationa. Information about the associationb. Ways to get involved (online and offline) in their activities

7. The local communitya. Information about the school’s contextb. Information about school networksc. Information about education projects within the local community

With an acceptable overall Krippendorf’s alpha (0.855) at the initial trial
