Jay Z & Kanye West
Watch The Throne
Album CoverThe colour of the album cover is gold. The colour
gold has connotations of wealth. This is relevant
to the careers of both Jay-Z and Kanye West as
they are both extremely successful artists in the
music industry. Individually, they are solo artists,
but as this album is collaborative, the colour gold
makes the album feel ‘special’ and one of a kind.
The print has a very regal feel to it, which relates
to the album title ‘Watch The Throne’ The overall
effect that is being portrayed is that of royalty,
and that this album is better than any other. Jay-
Z and Kanye West are admired for their work,
and are the most recognizable within the rap/hip
hop genre, so the album has a sense of
superiority about it. The simplicity of the
typography compliments the plain gold
background.
Inside CoverThe inside cover shows the
faces of both Jay Z and Kanye
West , the images show a
portrait of both of their faces.
The colour is simplistic black
and white, this goes with the
simple gold colour of the
album cover. Their faces have
been morphed with what
appears to be a lion or a tiger.
Wild animals have
connotations of being
aggressive, frightening and
domineering. This is perhaps
the image the artists want to
portray in regards to their
success. Wild animals have
intense and violent
connotations, so for both of
their faces to be photo
shopped onto this type of
animal demonstrates power
and superiority. Their facial
expressions show an
emotionless cold stare, which
supports the idea that they are
in control. The American flag
simply represents where they
are from. The middle cover is
animal print which matches
Kanye and Jay being
portrayed as tigers. There is
an angel featured on the
digipak which could
demonstrate that their music
is above everything else.
