Basics of copyright

• There are two sets of copyright:- Song Copyright (Composition and Lyrics)- Sound Recording Copyright (Master Recording)

• Ownership of Copyright- Copyright of the song is owned by the writer and publisher- Sound recording copyright is generally owned by the company or

individual who has financed the recording. This is generally the Record Company

• Exploitation of song copyright is further divided into:- Performing rights (public performances)- Mechanical rights (copy)

What are the rights of Copyright?

• The right to reproduce.

• The right to prepare derivative works.

• The right to distribute.

• The right to perform publicly.

• The right to display the work publicly.

• The right to perform the sound recordings publicly by means of digital audio transmission.

PRS for Music has agreements in 83 countries around the world,

including other collecting societies

Joining PRS for Music:

While members can join either PRS or MCPS, it is usually the case that they join both societies together. Current membership fees are:

MCPS or PRS writer fee is £50 and £400 for a publisher per society.
