IRAQ SITUATION UNHCR FLASH UPDATE 30 April 2017
POPULATION MOVEMENTS New arrivals outpace returns in camps east of Mosul for first time in four weeks. Between 26 and 27 April, 597 families (3,076 individuals) arrived to camps east of Mosul, while 220 families (1,069 individuals) departed. Overall, there are currently about 2,400 empty shelter plots in camps east of Mosul. Camps south of Mosul received 891 families (5,346 individuals), primarily to newly-opened areas of Hammam Al-Alil 2, while 362 families (2,172 individuals) departed. New arrivals were primarily fleeing from west Mosul, and returns were mainly to areas of origin in east Mosul.
No new arrivals to camps north of Mosul since 26 April. This is a sharp contrast compared to the preceding week, when 100 to 250 individuals had arrived on a daily basis. Currently, there are 2,174 empty shelter plots in the three camps north of Mosul: Nargizlia 1 (460 plots), Nargizlia 2 (1,063 plots) and Qaymawa (651 plots). 47 families (222 persons) departed Nargizlia 1 camp and returned to their places of origin in east Mosul and surrounding locations primarily based on the desire to resume their livelihood activities.
250 Iraqi refugees return to east Mosul from Turkey. The Iraqi authorities reported that they provided the returnees with transportation by bus from the border to their areas of origin on 27 April.
SITUATION UPDATE Members of minority populations targeted by extremist groups seek recognition and support. Minority groups, many of whom are now preparing to return to retaken areas, have indicated that provision of services, including psychosocial support, and the ability to exercise essential rights such as access to justice, are key elements in their return and reintegration in their areas of origin. UNESCO welcomes liberation of Hatra. Armed groups have been cleared from Al-Hadar district of Ninewa governorate, liberating 20 villages as well as the archaeological site of Hatra. UNESCO affirmed its readiness to help protect and promote Iraqi heritage as a force for national cohesion, peace and recovery for the country.
RESPONSE UPDATE
UNHCR continues receiving new arrivals at Hammam Al-Alil 2. Following the opening of the second phase of construction at Hammam Al-Alil 2, UNHCR has enrolled 1,689 families (9,545 individuals) in the information tracking system, ASSIST, to facilitate access to assistance and services, including shelter. At present, 115 tents remain unoccupied. UNHCR protection partners and camp management in Hammam Al-Alil 2 continue to assist in reuniting families. 200 separated family members were reunited with their relatives on 26 April through family reunification procedures established in the camp. UNHCR distributed 508 CRI kits on 26 April for newly arrived IDPs in the Government’s Jad’ah 5 camp. In total, UNHCR has distributed 5,002 CRI kits in the camp through its partner Muslim Aid.
UNHCR needs USD 212 million in 2017 to continue providing urgent protection, shelter and camp coordination and camp management assistance to IDPs from Mosul
