Introducing Blackboard Collaborate
• Blackboard Collaborate is a web-based video and audio conferencing system which allows real-time communication between instructors and students
• Similar in operation to Skype and Google Hangouts however Collaborate is:– Hosted in Canada – Integrated with VIU user accounts – Integrated with Desire2Learn and your class lists
Communicating in the Collaborate Environment

Push to talk when the microphone is free
Do not forget to press the button again when finished to release the mic
One speaker at a time, controlled by the moderator. Consider the metaphor of the talking stick.
Whoever holds the talking stick has within there hands the power of words. Only they can speak while holding the stick, and the other council members must remain silent. 1

Roles in the meeting
Moderator – Moderators have access to all Blackboard Collaborate features, including the ability to grant Moderator status to Participants. The person conducting a session, such as the instructor, is generally the Moderator.
Participant – Participants have restricted access to Blackboard Collaborate features. Students are typically Participants, although Moderators can grant Participants Moderator status as well as individual privileges such as speaking and whiteboard access.
Protocol for online meetings
• Just like in the classroom, protocol for how we interact with each other should be made explicit
• If you would like to ask a question please click the hand icon in the participants panel
• Please indicate if you are away with the away button

The chat window
One can also send a private chat to any participant in the room by right-clicking the
users name in the participants list and selecting ‘Send a private chat’
Whiteboard
The whiteboard is also used as the space to share presentations via the load content button
Application sharing
• Allows you to share an application on your desktop with participants
Web tours
• Allows you to share a website with participants or allow participants to share websites with the group
Saving session artifacts
• File Save Chat… (text file) • File Save Participants list… (text file) • File Save Quiz… (If applicable) • File Save Session plan… (If applicable) • File Save Whiteboard… (Save as PDF or
PNG)
Recording the session
• Use screen recording software
– CamStudio (Free and open source for Windows only, no post production editing)
– Active Presenter (Free for Windows only, with post production editing)
– Camtasia Studio ($299 one time license PC/Mac)
