Classification of Skills

• The classification of skills assists in understanding the learning and development of skills.

• Skills/techniques are classified as in a number of ways.

Open and Closed Skills

• CLOSED– Few variables– Same response

required

• OPEN– Many choices– Unpredictable

E.g. forward roll, free throw, penalty kick, high serve

E.g. lay up, overhead clear, dig pass, dribbling.

Continuum

Simple and Complex Skills

• SIMPLE– Little decision making.– Basic movement patterns.– Repetition of set

movements.

Eg Basketball Free throw / Badminton High Serve.

• COMPLEX– Lots of info to be

processed.– Accuracy involved.– Lots of subroutines.

Eg Overhead clear, lay up,

Continuum

• Discrete– Clear start and

finish points.

Eg High Serve, Golf

drive.

• Continuous – Repetitive in

nature, cyclical

Eg Cycling, Running.

• Serial

-Subroutines linked in a sequence.

E.g. Lay Up, Overhead Clear
