Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are often site-specific and
designed to transform the perception of a space. Generally, the term is applied to interior spaces,
whereas exterior interventions are often called public art, land art or intervention art; however, the
boundaries between these terms overlap.
Installation art can be either temporary or permanent. Installation artworks have been constructed in
exhibition spaces such as museums and galleries, as well as public and private spaces. The genre
incorporates a broad range of everyday and natural materials, which are often chosen for their
evocative !ualities, as well as new media such asvideo, sound, performance, immersive virtual
reality and the internet. "any installations are site-specific in that they are designed to exist only in
the space for which they were created, appealing to !ualities evident in a three-dimensional
immersive medium. #rtistic collectives such as the $xhibition %ab at &ew 'ork(s #merican "useum
of &atural )istory created environments to showcase the natural world in as realistic a medium as
possible. %ikewise, *alt +isney Imagineering employed a similar philosophy when designing the
multiple immersive spaces for +isneyland in . /ince its acceptance as a separate discipline, a
number of institutions focusing on Installation art were created. These included the "attress 0actory,
1ittsburgh, the "useum of Installation in %ondon, and the 0airy +oors of #nn #rbor, "I, among
others.
performance art is a performance presented to an audience, traditionally interdisciplinary.
1erformance may be either scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated; spontaneous or
otherwise carefully planned with or without audience participation. The performance can be live or
via media; the performer can be present or absent. It can be any situation that involves four basic
elements2 time, space, the performer(s body, or presence in a medium, and a relationship between
performer and audience. 1erformance art can happen anywhere, in any venue or setting and for any
length of time. The actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time
constitute the work.
