A Discussion of the Issues in the UpcomingMunicipal Elections

General Meetingattendees appreciatedhearing from AlexisThomas, of TheExchange, and RodBohannon of theGreater IndianapolisNAACP discussissues voters shouldbe thinking about inthe upcomingmunicipal elections.

Top 5 issues include:1) Criminal JusticeCenter - while acouncil committeevoted to stop theproject, we heard thatthe proposal may be

offered from the floor at the next full council meeting.

2) IMPD - we need more police officers just to meet nationalstandards for police to population ratios. The council is alsolikely to address a $4.7 million proposal to provide IMPDwith some equipment. The mayor vetoed the originalproposal because it was not requested by the Departmentof Public Safety, however there seems to be concern aboutthe age of police vehicles and other equipment used byIMPD.

3) Poverty/Inequality - Indianapolis is two cities. One population in our city is doing very well. The otherpopulation in our city is struggling. See the following link fora more information about how different communities arefairing in the economy.http://www.indystar.com/story/money/2015/04/11/economic-gaps-growing-among-hoosiers/25639787/

4) Vacant and Abandoned Housing - The city continues tostruggle with abandoned housing due to the aftermath ofThe Great Recession. Municipal policy will need to addressequitable usage of abandoned properties, gentrification aswell as findings justice ways to balance the need forinvestment in neighborhoods versus speculative investorswho are less committed to neighborhoods.

5) Education/Pre-K Implementation - The city and business

Videos are posted daily on Facebook ad YouTube. They are also seen by both mayoral campaigns.
