Urban LeagUe ofgreater Kansas CityAbout the

mpowering Communities and Changing Lives defines the legacy of the urban League of greater Kansas City from the time it was founded in 1919 as the urban League for negroes of Kansas City and continuing today. Established as a social service agency to address the

myriad of challenges facing black immigrant workers and black soldiers returning from the war, the League crafted an empow-erment movement that worked to create a climate of equality and opportunity for people of color in a segregated society.

the League’s founders believed that employment, vocational skills training and education would empower blacks and help

to build bridges of respect across the color line, thus proving that blacks could co-exist in harmony with whites in the

workplace. Founded on the principles of equality and opportunity, the urban League of greater Kansas City was incorporated in 1920 and worked aggressively in the early years for equal rights for blacks seeking to improve the social and economic conditions in their lives.

the urban League of greater Kansas City is a community based not-for-profit organization governed

by a volunteer interracial Board of Directors. today, the urban League’s empowerment agenda focuses on four

program areas: education; economics; race relations; and leadership development.

the mission of the urban League is to achieve equality and promote socio-economic opportunity to improve the quality of life of African Americans and others.

since its inception, the urban League has provided a myriad of education and employment programs and been engaged in activi-ties designed to positively impact race relations in the community. the rich history of championing race relations, advocating for change, and responding to community remains a living legacy.

four critical areas where the

racial equality gap persists continue to be the focus of the Urban League

and are pivotal to the mission and vision of the organization:

And in fact, we’re doing more each year … with less … because funding sources are getting tighter.

As the urban League gets tougher and funding sources get tighter, we have to ask urban League friends and fans to give more by purchasing an urban League membership. we’ll put your membership dollars to work in carrying out our mission and in carrying on our programs:

As the UrbAn LeAgUe of greAter KAnsAs City LooKs forwArd to the new yeAr, this is A CALL to one And ALL to invest in the fUtUre of oUr CommUnity to heLp hArness oUr CoLLeCtive power to AChieve oUr UniLAterAL mission. empowering Communities and Changing Lives is the mantra of the urban League. we are enthusiastically and tirelessly working to lead change and make a measurable difference in the quality of life for all who reside within the boundaries of greater Kansas City.

During these times when poverty in Jackson and wyan-dotte Counties is pervasive, persistent, and paralyzing, bold change is needed to make a difference. our Destination: Wealth Creation® initiative is a proactive and innovative approach to an intractable problem. we cannot eliminate poverty. But we are convinced that a concentrated, comprehensive, concerted, out-of-the-box approach that is future-focused with intermit-tent success measures along the way will change life’s course for many of the poor in our community.

Destination: Wealth Creation® is the urban League’s newest program that will help individuals and families achieve finan-cial stability. research and investigation has taught us that the wealth gap between African Americans and whites continues to persist due, in part, to the inability of blacks to pass assets and financial management strategies from one generation to the next. Consultation with national agencies and institu-tions, and partnerships with an engaged business, faith-based, and political community will help us bridge that gap and achieve the project’s mission, which is to create wealth in urban communities and promote socio-economic opportunity through financial education and asset development.

During the upcoming year and beyond, the urban League will work aggressively to provide comprehensive financial education, one-on-one coaching, asset development strategies and resources for low to middle income individuals, youth and families in the greater Kansas City area. we will work in concert with the African American faith-based congregations and community organizations to teach financial strategies and establish trust funds for children ages zero to five years old within the church and the community at large. we will bank the un-banked, improve credit scores, and empower individ-uals and families to find the pathway to financial freedom.

so, when you receive information about the urban League and Destination: Wealth Creation®, i encourage you to read it without hesitation and take action. visit our complex and our website—get to know us! then, join us as we endeavor to make a difference. we need your help and we value your support.

since 1919, the urban League of greater Kansas City has been a stalwart champion of not only of the underserved, but also of our entire community. what affects one has an impact on the whole: we must continue to join in unity to empower our community and change lives.

was both honored and humbled when i learned that the urban League had selected me to receive the 2008 Equalizer Award for

individual Achievement,” said tammy Edwards, former director of inclusion and Leadership Development for sprint. Most notable was Edwards’ significant contribution to the development and execution of strategies and programs that attracted, retained and developed workforce talent. in addition, she played a leading role in helping build employ-ment brand awareness and strategic partnerships with local and national diverse organizations.

“Mrs. Edwards was instrumental in helping to institute workplace diver-sity accountability metrics into the framework and culture,“ said gwen grant, urban League president & CEo. “Accountability is the critical ingredient that drives diversity and inclusion in corporate America,” added grant.

“her passion for developing youth is unprecedented,” grant continued, referring to Edwards’ creation of the national urban League’s youth Develop-ment Leadership Program that prepares

middle school students for successful high school experiences. she also serves on the boards of directors for inroADs/KC, Children’s Church at st. James united Methodist Church, Black Education Council, greater Kansas City Chapter of LinKs, inc., national Eagle Leadership institute and the Black Community Fund. since receiving the award, Mrs. Edwards has transitioned to the Federal reserve Bank where she serves as the Assistant vice President and Community Affairs officer.

the 2008 Equalizer Award for indi-vidual Achievement was presented during the urban League of greater Kansas City’s Equalizer Awards Luncheon, a component of the Annual Career Fair & hiring Bazaar. the Equalizer Award for Advancing Corporate Diversity was presented to Enterprise rent-A-Car and the “working toward Equality” commen-dation was awarded to Ameristar Casino Kansas City.

“the Equalizer Awards Luncheon recognizes an individual and organiza-tions for excellence and achievement in diversity initiatives and practices,” explained gwen grant. “these awards honor those entities that are on

course and making positive changes in the workplace.”

grant said award decisions are made based on confidential information, which is submitted to the urban League and reviewed by a panel of expert judges based on stringent criteria.

Emilie rottinghaus, human resources group manager of Enterprise rent-A-Car, said, “you’re always nervous about questionnaires of this nature and you wonder if your information is good enough. But we reviewed our database, received the necessary clearance and completed the application.”

rottinghaus said that confidentiality was key in deciding whether or not to submit the information requested. “Because of our relationship with the urban League, we were very confident that the our information would be kept confidential, and it was.” she added that Enterprise rent-A-Car was surprised to learn of their selection for the award, but we knew we were on the right track. we’re always looking to do better in the area of diversity and inclusion.”

grant says that the Equalizer Award is an important component of the Annual Career Marketplace Bazaar & hiring Fair and to the greater Kansas City Community. “the urban League established the awards to promote work-place diversity. “these awardees set the bar for other organizations. they under-stand the importance and the value of diversity and inclusion.“

early one-quarter of youth without a high school degree live in poverty. Many students are deficient in basic skills, drop out and

never matriculate toward post-secondary education or training. what statistics1 reveal is that the education achievement gap between students who are white and those of color is ever widening.

what is missing is the basic compo-nent of a fruitful and productive life: education—quality education that could empower the youth of our future. what is missing is the collective support of family and community.

what is available is the Educa-tional Empowerment Plan offered by the urban League of greater Kansas City. the program is targeted to reach nearly 3,000 students and their parents in grades K-12 in the hickman Mills C-1, Kansas City, Missouri; Center; and Kansas City, Kansas school Districts.

through the urban League’s educa-tion empowerment Center, a state-of-the-art learning/education facility, low to middle income youth and their families can utilize individualized assessment and tutorial support to achieve academic success. “the purpose of the Educa-tion Empowerment Center is to provide study skills, tutorial support, parent education/empowerment, community

outreach and advocacy to improve student academic achievement and increase graduation rates,” said Dawn hickman, urban League Director of Education initiatives.

“the overarching purpose of the Education Empowerment agenda is to encourage youth to stay in school, avoid violence, and strive for academic excellence,” hickman said. “we want to provide a stable environment that nurtures our children so that they can be successful in whatever vocation or career they desire to pursue.”

there are three ComPonents of the edUCation emPowerment Center:youth Development training Institute: Provides literacy in math, reading, writing, listening, problem solving and transfer-ence of skills to youth and their families. through assessment and documentation of student skill levels, counseling and guidance sessions help establish, monitor and achieve quality education.

parent/educator Development Institute: increases parental involvement and engagement in the academic achieve-ment and educational goals of their chil-dren. By teaming together, both parents and educators can become active and informed supporters of student educa-

tion and partners in pursuing student educational goals. through a myriad of workshops and meetings, parents and educators will gain the necessary skills to support the efforts of students.

Community outreach and Research: the urban League will remain a partner in closing the education achievement gap by holding public forums, participating in Adopt-A-school Programs, forming the urban League Education Asso-ciation and Education Empowerment steering Committee, and continuing research & Data Collection efforts.

to accomplish the objectives of the Education Empowerment Center, the urban League is collaborating with a number of organizations to achieve its mission. Each has played a pivotal role in helping plan, coordinate, and imple-ment program activities. our stake-holders are: Kansas City, Mo school District; hickman Mills school District; LinC; City of Kansas City – youth Advocacy office; and w.E.B. DuBois Learning Center.

“we have a very specific outline of the Education Center’s guiding prin-ciples that will be stringently followed,” hickman said. “this new program is timely, needed and is designed to produce results. we have worked with parents, educators and school district administrators to ensure the success of the students who so need our support.”

n the spring of 2005, the urban League of greater Kansas City launched the Afraid of the Dark Community reading & Dialogue Circle initiative that is a concerted

effort to get whites and people of color talking with one another about race issues. in non-threatening and structured settings, individuals can develop a greater understanding that will improve race relations without being afraid to share information and dispel myths.

this dynamic and revolutionary initiative was the brainchild of urban League President & CEo gwen grant, who says the idea was sparked after a conversation with a white friend, Carol grimaldi. the catalyst of the initiative was the book, Afraid of the Dark: What Whites and blacks need to know About each other, that was being discussed between a white and black church congregation.

the author of the book is Jim Myers, a career writer who has written about race relations for publications such as

rACE rELAtionsCiviC EngAgEMEnt

usA today and usA Weekend, Atlantic monthly and the Washington post.

in February of 2006, Myers made an auspicious visit to Kansas City and was featured in newspapers, appeared on the local nPr radio affiliate, and was feted at a public dialogue session during a reception and book signing. shortly thereafter, Myers and grant co-authored a guidebook to accompany the book written by Myers.

“the companion Dialogue & Work-book is designed for both individual and group work that stimulates honesty, observations, a deeper self-awareness and authentic conversation about race,” grant explains. “the individuals who participate in the reading and dialogue circles, though, are the most critical component for learning more about ourselves and the prejudices and myths that can be erased.”

Myers added that in America, neither race relations nor attitudes about race have changed since the book was written in 2000. “the issues along the color line

that the book describes still exist in the 21st century, reinforced in some cases by new incidents that give credence to old racial attitudes.”

According to grant, since race relations is a cornerstone of the urban League mission, it seemed natural that the organization take up the gauntlet and pursue a creative way to institute changes in the Kansas City community.

During the course of the official roll out of the initiative throughout the metropolitan area, reading circle members have included employees of Kansas City Art institute; Kansas City Power & Light; right Management, inc.; greater Kansas City Community Foun-dation; AArP Missouri; Mazuma Credit union; greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce; sonnenschien nath & rosenthal; h&r Block; and Cities of Leawood, Ks , Kansas City, Ks and raytown, Mo.

Most recently, the Kansas City, Mo Police Department has signed on. According to Chief Jim Corwin, the Kansas City Police Department accepted the challenge because the department views this dialogue process as an oppor-tunity to build stronger relationships between police officers and the commu-nities they serve.

the Afraid of the Dark Community reading and Dialogue Circle initiative continues with numerous other indi-viduals forming groups in churches, civic and social organizations, and is spreading to other businesses and community-based entities.

“this is one of the best resources that promotes positive race relations in a safe environment using a structured method-ology to discuss racial differences that divide Caucasians, African Americans, and Latinos,” grant said. “this simple tool can help us break loose of preju-dice, half-truths and ignorance. in doing so, we can begin the intricate journey towards building authentic relationships and bridging the racial divide.”
