Transcript of Impact of the Industrial Revolution on Sports

Codification  of  Sports:  Codification  is  basically  the  creation  of  a  standard  set  of  rules.  Thanks  to  the  increase  in  education,  many  people  were  able  to  read  and  write.  Thanks  to  these  two  skills  the  first  set  of  rules  were  created  for  sports.    For  codification  to  take  place  there  must  be  a:

• Reason  for  it.  • Need  for  it.  • Process  that  occurs.

Urbanisation:  Many  people  moved  during  this  era  due  to  many  reasons:

• There  was  less  space  for  sports.    • They  needed  a  more  centralized  population  to  work  in  the  towns.  This  centralized  population  would  also  have  a  greater  competition  against  a  wide  variety  of  opponents.  E.g.  Regional  Leagues.

• The  need  for  rules  would’ve  limited  the  playing  sizes  of  the  teams  and  the  participants.  • Also,  they  needed  a  greater  space  and  environment  in  order  to  play.  It  should  also  be  big  enough  so  that  spectators  could  be  allowed  to  come  and  watch.

Impact  of  Industrial  Revolution  on  Sports:

Social  Influences:  Thanks  to  sports  many  people  were  often  brought  together.  This  was  mainly  due  to  its  quickly  escalating  popularity  in  public  schools  and  with  the  adults.  Many  students  were  inspired  to  continue  playing  sports  after  leaving  school.    Also,  with  the  reduced  working  hours,  many  of  the  adults  could  either  watch  or  participate  in  these  sporting  events.  Many  people,  thanks  to  the  development  in  transport,  could  travel  across  counties  and  support  their  teams  in  these  matches  and  events.  This  had  boosted  the  patronage  of  the  teams.    Landowners  took  advantage  of  this  situation  and  began  charging  the  spectators  a  small  fee  in  order  to  enable  them  to  watch  the  matches.
