Senior members are very important for IEEE Malaysia because of several reasons. Senior membership provides a
platform for loyal members to get recognized for their professional contribution to the fields that are important to
IEEE; it is the highest grade that members can apply. For the past four years, we have seen reducing number of

members (as observed in all regions and countries), but the
number of senior members continued to grow. Being a senior
member encourages them to retain their membership and in turn,
to offer their time as volunteers.
By the end of September 2018, ten senior membership elevation
workshops have been conducted throughout the country, including
Sabah and Sarawak. In order to maximize resources, Malaysia
section collaborated with several chapters and student branches as
well as the subsections as listed in the table below. This year, the
attendance has been very encouraging.
For this effort, Malaysia section received the R10 MD Incentive
Grants award under “retention” and “SM elevation” categories.
The impacts from past efforts together with other MD activities
contributed to the award of “2018 Outstanding Section
Membership Retention Performance”.

Membership Development

IEEE Malaysia Membership Development (MD)—Senior Membership Elevation Program
The main reason why Malaysia section decided to conduct
the SM elevation is because it recognized that members
face several challenges to submit the applications.
First, they don’t have time to write all the necessary
details. The 3-hour hands-on workshop provided the time
for them to work on the application. Second, most
members feel that SM elevation is out of their reach and
that the requirements for 10 years of experience and 5
years of significant achievements are too high for them to
achieve, especially those who are in their thirties,
especially in the academics. Many people mistook the 10
years of experience with the years of IEEE membership.
During the workshop, the facilitators explained the
requirements listed in the light-blue shaded boxes below.
The last and most important reason for having the
workshop is because of the third requirement. During the
workshop (sometimes after), facilitators assist applicants
by introducing the potential referees, typically those from
the same organizations where they currently work.
SM applications are assessed and approved by the
Admissions & Advancement (A&A) committee, which
convene six times a year. The number of Malaysia section
members elevated in each A&A meeting for 2017 & 2018
are shown in the chart on the right. In addition, as of the
end of September 2018, 50 new SM applicants have got
their applications completed with all required referees and
should be elevated during the Oct A&A meeting. There
are 34 other applications which are still pending one or
more references and will be brought to the future A&A
meetings when all referees have submitted their referrals.

A few hours before IEEE R10 Congress started, a fun and fruitful Teacher
In Service Programme (TISP) workshop, was held at Prime Plaza Hotel,
Bali. This collaborative event between IEEE Educational Activities Board
with IEEE Region 10 Educational Activities and IEEE Indonesia Section,
aims at developing an action plan for conducting educator professional
development session in participant local area. Due to the noticeable
decline in interest among the young towards STEM, the IEEE team is
really keen in pre-university engineering education and believes this
problem could be tackled as well as produces positive result in future.
The workshop is hosted by Muhfizaturrahmah while the training sessions
are well-conducted by Zuhaina Zakaria and Supavadee Aramvith.. Two
simple lesson plans which are ‘Working with wind energy’ together with
‘Making your arm robot’ tasks have been introduced to the participants.
The activities were focused around hands-on sessions in a teams of
“engineers” to design and build-up a wind turbine for the 1st session
while robot arm in 2nd session using simple materials such as plastic cups,
craft sticks, paperclips, wood dowels, cardboard and etc, Regardless of
limited time, the teams are able to finish and present the tasks given at
the end of the session. In addition, this TISP workshop provided a
discussion platform among participants and instructors on how to
implement this programme in their local area. In the meantime, it can
boost the interest plus encourages pre-university students to pursue
STEM-related careers. The event is a great success since it received
participants not only from IEEE community itself, yet local Indonesian
teachers are also interested to take part in this workshop.

Cultural Sharing @ IEEE R10 Congress 2018
On 1st September 2018, the last night for
Region 10 SYWL Congress 2018, a cultural
demonstration and cultural night were held.
Cultural demonstration is where participants
from all over the countries have their own

represent their country and share it with
others. It was a very good opportunity to get
to know a new culture and language. On that
particular night, participants were asked to
wear their traditional clothes, thus, it was a
very colourful and cheerful night. In Malaysia’s
both, we present some of Malaysian’s snacks,
keychains and we also wrote calligraphy for
people who came to our booth (Chinese and
jawi calligraphy). After that, all of the
participants gather to have a dinner, and have a
cultural performances. Every country perform
their country’s songs, dances - Malaysia was not
left behind. We decided to sing ‘Jalur Gemilang’
in conjunction of Malaysian’s Independence Day
the day before. It was a very fun and happy
time.
Student Track @ IEEE R10 Congress 2018
The Student tack was run on 31st August during
the congress. The track was participated by both
student and graduate student members On the
first session of the track there were talk from
IEEE president about his journey as a student,
IEEE R10 director about research opportunities,
and IEEE R10 Elect about ethics in publishing.
This was fallowed by talks from Rajesh Ingle and
Pasan Pethiyagoda, the student activities
coordinator and the regional student
representative respectively, both talks were
focused on the activities run by student
branches and what are the best practices to
have to keep the SBs active. It was brought up
that there is an issue of student branches not
reporting their activities, therefore they were
deemed inactive and closed as result SBs were
encouraged to report so there is
communication between R10 and SBs. In the
second session student were divided into
groups and had to perform a skit. Malaysia

discussed issues faced by each participant at their own sections. There also presentation from YPs from
different section to showcase their best practices that are prominent and worth to share with other sections.
The presentation were done by YPs from Tokyo Section, Bangalore Section and Bangladesh Section. Some of
the noticeable highlight is how the YPs from these section actively involved in humanitarian activities that are
making positive impacts on the society especially when they are natural disasters happened and their
immediate response on these incident is laudable. Interactive session “How many engineers does it take to fix
IEEE career resources?” hosted by Flavia Dinca, Vice Chair of IEEE Young Professional Global, also provided
for participants to work together to propose of a practical solutions that can be implemented to solve the
problems of how the career resource of IEEE can be fixed that can accommodate the target audience ranging
fresh-grad to experienced professionals. Group members are randomly assigned and given only limited time to

IEEE SYWL R10 Congress is a professional event which gathers delegates/volunteers who are from
different countries in R10 to network, connect and learn together. There were 4 major tracks happening in
SYWL R10 Congress which are the Student Track, Young Professional Track, Women in Engineering Track
and last but not least, the Life Member Track. Every track had different target audience and served a
different purpose in the IEEE organisation but they do have one thing in common which is dedicated to
advancing technology for the benefits of humanity.
Having an immense interest in women empowerment and achieving gender equality in the engineering
workforce, I had participated in the Women in Engineering Track during the congress. I met a lot of
beautiful women who work together in order to add values into others. The talks and sharing sessions by
every speaker were fruitful and inspiring. We shared the same passion and aspiration. We also shared
insights about the current policy in our countries respectively and how we could be a part of it. It was
indeed overwhelming to gather and network with these marvellous people who share the same purpose of
life and passion together on a platform. We exchanged thoughts, event ideas and even our cultures
throughout the whole congress. We strived and worked in IEEE, as a team and as a female to make this
world a better one. Thank you for sponsoring the IEEE international student members to join and be a part

indeed a very generous IEEE volunteer with good personality. I was inspired by him, when he shared with
me his experience of founding IEEE SB in his university.
Besides, the SYWL Congress was also attended by IEEE President, Mr. James Jefferies, IEEE R10
