Application of Chemical Engineering in IT

Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)

OLED Components

Substrate: Supports the OLED.

Anode (transparent): Adds electron "holes”, when current flows through OLED

Organic layers: Organic molecules or polymers.

Conducting layer: Transport "holes" from the anode.

Emissive layer: Transport electrons from the cathode

Cathode: Injects electrons when current flows through OLED.

OLED Working

Types of OLEDsType Used In Characteristic

Passive-matrix OLED

Cell phones, PDAs & MP3 players

Best for text & Icons; Small Screens (D:2-3 in)

Active-matrix OLED

Computer monitors, large-screen TVs and electronic signs or billboards

Efficient for large displaysfaster refresh rates suitable for video

Transparent OLED

Heads-up displays Transparent components (up to 85%)

Top-emitting OLED

Smart1 cards Substrate is either opaque or reflective

Foldable OLED Cell phones, PDAs, GPS receiver, "smart“1 clothing

Flexible plastic substrates Lightweight and Durable

White OLED Fluorescent lights used in homes and offices

Brighter & Uniform White Lightmore energy efficienttrue-colour qualities
