Last year our organization adopted new mission and vision statements to better and more boldly state what we do and how we envision our community’s response to the critical need for more people to get involved in our life-saving work. Our mission proudly states that we save lives and offer hope and healing through excellence in organ and tissue donation.
This year is a year of hope. It is one where we are finding new and creative ways to meet the demands of our life-saving mission. At the beginning of January we were honored to launch a new program in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety aimed at increasing the number of registered donors in Minnesota. The program, called “You and $2,” provides the opportunity for Minnesotans to contribute $2 to organ, eye and tissue donation on their driver’s license or state ID application. We know that education is the key to encouraging more people to say yes to donation.
We strive to provide compassionate care and hope and healing for the donor family both at the very emotional moments surrounding the death and in the months and years that follow. Our Donor Family Advisory Council, comprised
of family members from throughout our region, will help guide us in our goal this year of achieving at least a 90% satisfaction rate among donor family members. The council will also be involved in helping us explore new opportunities to support and connect families across our vast service area.
Donation agencies throughout the country will be working together this year to share stories of people who provide hope to those touched by donation and transplantation. This “I am Hope” campaign is part of a larger campaign to register 20 million new organ, eye and tissue donors in the nation. In this report you’ll see the faces of people in our community who are hope to all of us.
This strong beginning will propel us forward to an exciting year where we will achieve much towards our mission of saving lives. It is my hope that you can see yourself in our work and the difference you can make by engaging in this incredible mission.

Minnesotans can support donation by registering to be an organ,
eye and tissue donor and, new this year, by contributing $2 toward
education about organ, eye and tissue donation on their driver’s
license or state ID card application. “You and $2” is made possible
by passage of a bi-partisan bill during the 2011 legislative session
and is modeled after other states with similar programs and strong
donor designation rates.
While Minnesotans donate at a higher rate than the national average
– 60% of adults in the state versus 42% of adults nationwide – we
know we can do more. Our work is not done until we end deaths on
the transplant waiting list and ensure a transplant for everyone in
need. Visit www.Life-Source.org for more information on “You
and $2” and www.DonateLifeMN.org to register as a donor.

Every day during 2012 a story will be shared by one
of the donation agencies in the country to illustrate the
hope that each one of us provides by engaging in the
life-saving mission of organ, eye and tissue donation.
Look for stories from Minnesota in April, North Dakota
in July and South Dakota in December. You can join
the “I am Hope” campaign by sharing these inspiring
stories with your personal and professional networks.

Last year LifeSource conducted community surveys in South Dakota to better inform our
outreach efforts in the state. We were interested in learning why non-donors have not yet
taken the steps to register and how we can best reach those people with the information
they need to make a positive decision about donation. Our results show that we may be
able to increase the number of registered donors in the state by sharing key messages that
speak to some misinformation among non-donors. During 2012 we will be reassessing
our advertising and outreach campaigns to adopt these messages and help provide the
information South Dakotans need to register as donors.

The gifts of donation given by children are some of the most precious gifts. Often, children
who are waiting for transplant need to receive their organ from another child. LifeSource has
been working on ways to increase the number of transplantable organs given with love by
children and their families to help save more lives.
In 2011 we worked with physicians, intensivists and transplant centers to develop pathways
to guide our donation coordinators in strategies to optimize organ function in pediatric
donors. In July, a team from our donation service area, including partners from Sanford
Health, Mayo Clinic and Rapid City Regional Hospital, attended a pediatric organ donation
summit. Last year, 12 children at the University of Minnesota and Mayo Clinic received
transplants from LifeSource donors. This year, we continue to focus on maximizing donation
options for pediatric donors so that more children have the opportunity to save lives.
