Properties of Hydrogen

Properties:

1. Hydrogen is a Gas.

2. At standard temperature and pressure, Hydrogen is colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and a highly combustible diatomic gas.

3. Hydrogen is the most flammable of all the known substances.

4. Hydrogen regularly forms compounds with other non-metallic elements.

5. At a normal temperature Hydrogen is not very reactive, but when it is heated to a high temperature it becomes very reactive.

6. Hydrogen is the lightest element.

Discovery of Hydrogen

Hydrogen was discovered in 1766, by Henry Cavendish. Hydrogen can be artificially produced when iron and dilute acids are mixed together.

Examples of Hydrogen

Water: H20

Coal: C135H96O9NS

Methane: CH4

Hydrogen is also found in many plants and it makes up 0.15% of the Earth’s crust.

Significance of Hydrogen

Hydrogen is one of the most important elements. Without out it there would be no water or fuel. Hydrogen is the most abundant

element in the universe and we could not survive without it.
